Transcript [00:00] Welcome to the weekly update of Israel [00:02] and Christians Today. It is the 20th of [00:06] August, 2026. [00:09] Events over this past week underline yet [00:12] again how public perception of the [00:14] conflict between Israel and its [00:16] neighbors is largely shaped by media [00:19] framing. Israel's enemies such as Hamas, [00:22] Hezbollah, and their allies clearly and [00:24] cleverly manipulate the media by [00:27] spinning events to portray themselves as [00:30] innocent victims, [00:32] all the while attacking uh Israel and [00:35] its civilians, and they portray Israel [00:37] as a merciless aggressor. [00:40] Messaging that comes from Jerusalem is [00:43] often confused by divisions within [00:45] Israeli society and is greedily used by [00:48] those who wish to portray the Jewish [00:51] people in a bad light. It's no longer [00:53] about truth, but about perception. [00:57] So, [snorts] we'll see this as we look [00:58] at Israel's military operations in the [01:01] Gaza Strip. After a short respite, [01:03] Israel has resumed military operations [01:07] in [snorts] the Hamas controlled section [01:09] of the Gaza Strip. Two recent incidents [01:13] reveal this battle of the narratives. [01:16] The secular media widely adopts the [01:20] Hamas narrative. Israel's killing of [01:23] Palestinians in Gaza is regarded as [01:27] unjustified attack on innocent victims. [01:31] Israel's justifications, its reasons for [01:35] doing these uh military operations are [01:37] widely ignored. They're treated with [01:41] suspicion or they're rejected in the [01:43] media. Part of the problem is that the [01:46] Israeli political leadership gives [01:48] confusing signals. Another issue is that [01:52] its military leadership of the IDF [01:54] generally does not immediately release [01:57] detailed information about military [02:00] operations [02:01] largely due to the highly sensitive [02:04] nature of the incidents. [02:07] So the first case was uh that of Colonel [02:11] Jamal Abu Camil, aged 43, who was killed [02:15] on August 13 when an Israeli drone fired [02:19] three missiles at his car near the Gaza [02:22] city. The IDF and Israel security agency [02:27] identified him as a quote commander in [02:30] the Hamas terrorist organization who [02:32] infiltrated Israeli territory during the [02:35] October 7th massacre close quote. In [02:39] [snorts] other words, he was a [02:40] participant in the October 7th invasion [02:44] of Israel. The IDF stated that quote, [02:47] "Throughout the war and in recent [02:49] months, this terrorist advanced [02:52] terrorist attacks against IDF troops and [02:54] Israeli citizens and was eliminated from [02:57] the air in order to remove the threat." [03:00] Close quote. The IDF has been criticized [03:04] for not releasing supporting evidence. [03:07] Israel's framing directly collides with [03:10] how Palestinian officials describe the [03:14] victim of the attack. Hamas's interior [03:17] ministry, which runs Gaza's civil [03:20] police, identified Abu Camil simply as [03:23] Gaza's police chief. And Gaza's police [03:26] force explicitly denied the Hamas [03:30] militant characterization, [03:32] stating, quote, he committed to is [03:35] committed to his police duties and has [03:37] no connection to other activities. Close [03:40] quote. Hamas itself condemned the strike [03:43] as a continuation of the brutal crimes [03:46] committed by the occupation against our [03:48] Palestinian people, framing this as an [03:51] assassination of a civil [03:55] official, not a legitimate strike on a [03:58] terrorist. [04:00] On October the 18th, an IDF strike near [04:03] Gaza City killed six and wounded 14. [04:07] Hamas called it a further proof of quote [04:10] blatant disregard for all calls for a [04:12] ceasefire [04:14] point pointedly invoking Trump's own [04:17] public statements that Israel should not [04:20] be striking Gaza right now. The IDF said [04:24] it struck a cafe in the Charti coastal [04:27] area near Gaza City Port where quote a [04:32] Nukeba Force Company commander, three [04:34] platoon commanders, and several more [04:36] terror operatives were meeting. Close [04:39] quote. Nukeba is Hamas's elite commando [04:42] unit, the one that spearheaded the [04:45] October 7th invasion of Israel. The [04:48] military's stated rationale was that the [04:50] group was advancing plans for terrorist [04:53] attacks against forces operating in the [04:55] Gaza Strip. And it added that one of the [04:58] terrorists targeted in the strike [05:00] participated in the October 7th massacre [05:04] and infiltrated Israeli territory that [05:06] day. Close quote. [05:09] However, the IDF revealed no names, [05:11] dates, or intercepted communications or [05:14] other supporting evidence. The IDF said [05:17] measures were taken to minimize harm to [05:19] uninvolved civilians and that it would [05:21] release verified results later. Defense [05:25] Minister Israel Katz tied the strike [05:27] explicitly to a stated government [05:30] policy. Israel's policy in Gaza is [05:33] clear. Remove threats, eliminate [05:35] terrorists, and exact retribution from [05:38] anyone who took part in the October 7th [05:42] massacre. [05:44] Now, this is a notably broader [05:48] uh justification than the simple concept [05:52] of imminent threat. [05:54] The latest strike falls under a policy [05:57] change that Israel adopted in early [05:59] August. Targeted strikes in Gaza, which [06:03] used to be routine and could happen [06:05] multiple times a day [06:08] at the field commander level, now [06:10] require sign off from the IDF chief of [06:13] staff, General Ael Zamir, with an [06:16] exception carved out for genuinely [06:18] imminent threats. That change was [06:21] explicitly tied to the ceasefire [06:23] negotiations. As one military source put [06:26] it, there are clear directives from the [06:28] political echelon as part of the [06:31] negotiations. [06:33] [snorts] [06:34] Now, moving on to Judeian Samaria known [06:37] as the West Bank, we see also this sort [06:40] of battle of the narratives [06:42] and particularly around this issue of [06:45] settler violence. [06:47] Israel's operation wall, iron wall, is [06:51] the IDF's counterterror operation [06:53] running since January 2025 [06:56] in the northern West Bank refugee camps. [07:00] This is designed to put down and meet [07:02] the threat coming from terror [07:04] organizations embedded in the refugee [07:06] camps such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and [07:11] so forth. This week the IDF ordered an [07:14] extension of the closure of the Tularam [07:18] Nams and Jennin camps through August [07:22] September 2026 affecting some 34,000 [07:26] Palestinians. [07:29] And the story that has dominated media [07:31] coverage this week concerns the [07:34] week-long uh quote siege of Kuzra [07:37] village [07:39] where three Palestinian families, about [07:42] 15 people, including children, were [07:44] reportedly trapped in their homes after [07:46] Israeli settlers established a new [07:49] outpost nearby in November. And then [07:53] starting August the 9th, [07:56] media reports that the settlers cut [07:59] their power and water while IDF troops [08:01] reportedly stood by. The OCR [08:05] called it criminal action by the [08:07] settlers supported or acquested in to by [08:11] Israel. Amnesty International went [08:13] further calling it a strategic terror. [08:17] Uh statements from the Israeli side [08:19] split sharply between official silence [08:22] at the top and pointed remarks from [08:24] officials just below it. Every outlet [08:27] that covered this matter converges on [08:29] the same point. The prime minister made [08:32] no public statement condemning the siege [08:34] at any point throughout the week-long [08:37] ordeal. Despite Washington actively [08:40] pressuring pressuring him to do so, [08:43] Times of Israel's own headline framed [08:45] this as US said pushing silent Netanyahu [08:49] to publicly condemn settler violence as [08:52] PM keeps mum. Al Jazzer's analysis on [08:56] the episode argue this silence reflects [08:59] genuine political constraint rather than [09:02] oversight. Netanyahu's coalition depends [09:05] on settler aligned partners and [09:08] Netanyahu had recently responded to [09:10] earlier settler violence by promising to [09:13] recognize more illegal outposts rather [09:16] than crack down on perpetrators. [09:20] On the other side, there has been [09:22] condemnation of these illegal activities [09:24] by Israelis in the West Bank. It is a [09:28] small group of those establishing [09:32] illegal outposts uh illegal under [09:35] Israeli law. And Yil Lighter, Israel's [09:39] ambassador to the US, gave the most [09:41] direct condemnation within from within [09:44] the government, calling the settlers [09:45] involved, quote, a gang of hooligans [09:48] who wreak havoc with gratuitous [09:50] violence, diverting energy from Israel's [09:53] own military and law enforcement. and he [09:56] added, "What we saw in the village of [09:58] Kusra this week is not what it means to [10:00] settle the land. The land of Israel is [10:03] not only a place we are commanded to [10:05] inhabit. It is a place where we are [10:07] commanded to live by justice." He called [10:12] the conduct of this small group of [10:14] extremists quote a distortion, even a [10:17] sacrilege of that commandment. [10:21] Israel Gunce, chairman of the Yesesha [10:24] Council, the main umbrella body for [10:27] Israel's communities in the West Bank, [10:29] not a government official, but the most [10:31] prominent voice from the settler [10:32] movement itself, said, quote, the events [10:35] in Kuzra are severe and are not our way. [10:38] quote adding quote there is no place to [10:41] decide individually to establish a hill [10:44] post hilltop outpost in the courtyard of [10:47] a home and there is certainly no [10:49] justification for violence toward [10:51] bystanders or security forces. [10:55] He paired that with a call for Israel to [10:57] keep expanding settlements in an orderly [10:59] and correct way, condemning the method, [11:02] not the goal. US Ambassador Mike Huckabe [11:06] used the sharpest language calling the [11:08] perpetrators quote Israeli terrorists [11:11] close quote and he coined the settlers [11:14] versus unsettlers framing to distinguish [11:18] legitimate settlement from the Kuzra [11:20] episode and he publicly praised G's [11:23] statement as coming from a quote real [11:26] settler close quote [11:29] now in the West Bank one of the most [11:31] controversial uh issues has been the [11:34] Israeli approval of expansion of [11:39] communities there. And the JNS reports [11:43] that the Israel Land Authority, which [11:45] manages most of the land in Israel, on [11:48] Tuesday announced it would market to [11:51] contractors and entrepreneurs the first [11:54] housing units of E1, as it's known, a [11:58] strategically significant area in Judea [12:01] and Samaria near Jerusalem. [12:04] Contractors who win the bids will [12:06] construct 1,400 units. [12:09] And according to JNS, the importance of [12:12] E1 lies in its location. [12:15] The 12 square kilometer area sits [12:18] between Mala Adomim, a Jewish city of [12:21] about 40,000 in the Judea desert and [12:24] Jerusalem. Once built, E1 will connect [12:27] Mala Adamim to the capital, forming a [12:30] larger metropolis, thus preventing the [12:33] Palestinian Authority from surrounding [12:35] Jerusalem with its own metropolis, which [12:37] would include Ramla, eastern parts of [12:40] Jerusalem and Bethlehem. The PA intends [12:43] to rest from Israel, eastern sections of [12:46] Jerusalem for its own future capital, [12:49] which has been promised to them by the [12:51] United Nations. Israeli security [12:54] analysts have long warned that Jerusalem [12:56] will become a border town if the [12:58] surrounding Arab settlement is allowed [13:00] to continue. The answer, they say, is [13:03] E1, which would protect Jerusalem, drive [13:06] a wedge through the nearly contiguous [13:09] Arab settlement, enveloping it, and [13:11] ensure Jewish territorial [13:14] contiguity eastward to the Jordan [13:17] Valley. [13:18] Israel justifies the E1 [13:23] construction as a legitimate step to [13:26] protect Jerusalem and the security of [13:28] the Jewish state. Israel's opponents of [13:31] course frame this as yet another Israeli [13:33] attempt to destroy the Palestinians as a [13:36] people and their right to a contiguous [13:39] independent state. JNS describes this as [13:43] follows. quote, "Both sides agree E1 [13:46] construction threatens Arab geographic [13:49] contiguity. At on-site press conferences [13:52] held in Mala Adamim to celebrate the [13:54] government's historical announcement, [13:57] Israeli Finance Minister Bezel Smotri [14:00] declared that Ewan construction buries [14:03] the idea of a Palestinian state." And [14:05] the PA said the same thing. Waffa, its [14:08] official news site, described Ewan's [14:10] chief objective as undermining the [14:12] establishment of a Palestinian state [14:14] with Jerusalem as its capital. Close [14:17] quote. And so, we live in an age of [14:20] confusion, of competing narratives. It [14:23] has become increasingly difficult to [14:26] distinguish between truth and lies. That [14:30] in itself is a sign we are living in the [14:32] last days, the time preceding the coming [14:34] of Messiah. Paul wrote to Timothy about [14:37] those times. There will be terrible [14:39] times in the last days. He wrote, [14:42] "People will be lovers of themselves. [14:44] They are the kind who are always [14:46] learning but never able to come to the [14:48] knowledge of the truth." [14:52] As Christians, we have a responsibility [14:54] to discern the signs of the times, to [14:57] carefully study events in the world in [14:59] the light of the Bible. Do not believe [15:02] everything that is pronounced as truth [15:04] or fact in the secular media. Satan is [15:08] the author of lies and he is busy sewing [15:11] the seeds of falsehood and deceit. Jesus [15:14] himself warned of this in Matthew 24 [15:16] when speaking to his disciples about the [15:18] last days. For false messiahs and [15:21] prophets will appear and perform great [15:23] signs and wonders to deceive, if [15:26] possible, even the elect. See, I have [15:29] told you ahead of time. [15:32] Study the news carefully. And if you are [15:34] uncertain or confused, ask the Holy [15:36] Spirit to help you discern truth from [15:39] lies and light from darkness. And so we [15:43] close this weekly update with some [15:45] prayer points. Let us pray this week for [15:47] Israel and her leaders. That wisdom and [15:50] unity prevail where division now reigns. [15:53] Pray for the upcoming elections. [15:57] uh that the people of Israel will elect [15:58] a strong and wise and just leadership. [16:03] Pray for the enemies of the Jewish [16:04] people, that hearts of stone will be [16:06] turned to hearts of flesh. Pray for an [16:09] end to hostilities and violence in Juda [16:11] and Samaria. Pray that the Israeli [16:13] government will apply the law equally [16:15] and fairly and protect all inhabitants [16:18] and respect human rights of all. Pray [16:21] that the question of sovereignty over [16:23] Judea and Samaria will be resolved so [16:26] that all Jews and non-Jews can live [16:28] under strong, stable, and equitable [16:31] government. [16:32] Pray for the peace of Jerusalem for all [16:34] who dwell within her borders. And above [16:37] all, pray for the speedy coming of the [16:40] Messiah of Abram, Isaac, and Jacob, who [16:43] alone can bring the peace that no [16:45] treaty, board, or ceasefire has yet [16:48] managed to deliver.
