Transcript [00:00] What you're seeing right now did not [00:01] happen. This also didn't happen. I'm [00:04] here with Van Jones. Hi, Van. [00:06] >> Hello. [00:06] >> How you doing? I want to talk to you [00:08] about this new reality that we're [00:10] dealing with, [00:11] >> [music] [00:11] >> which is the reality of fake news AI and [00:14] how it's affecting news media. [00:16] >> Well, I mean, we now have this world [00:17] where when you see something on social [00:19] media, you have to ask yourself [music] [00:21] the question, is this real? Is a human [00:23] being talking to another human being? [00:24] It's a historical figure, it's a [00:26] celebrity. Maybe it didn't happen at [00:28] all. So, now, I think the only shared [00:30] reality that we can have is that we [00:32] don't have a shared reality. I think [00:33] that's why we have to take take a lot [00:35] more seriously this information [music] [00:36] war. It's a 24/7 day a week battle for [00:40] the mind, [00:40] >> [music] [00:40] >> the global mind. The people who want to [00:43] divide, who want to distract, who want [00:45] to turn people against each other have [00:47] super weapons to do so now because, you [00:49] know, somebody looks at their phone, [00:51] they assume that what they're seeing is [00:52] real. [00:52] >> How are you seeing this manifesting in [00:55] [music] the war in Gaza, the the lack of [00:57] coverage and and outrage about what's [00:59] happening in Iran and Yemen? [01:00] >> The idea that you have whole sections of [01:03] people who live in an [music] [01:04] algorithmic reality where nothing [01:06] happened in Iran. It's insane. You know, [01:08] 40,000 people were murdered in Iran. And [01:11] you have people coming out disputing [01:12] [music] the numbers, the same people, by [01:14] the way, who never disputed a single [01:16] number from Hamas. [01:17] >> Hamas, right. [laughter] [01:18] No, Hamas is 100% right, but the [01:20] resistance of Iran, the Iranian people, [01:22] [music] that you can't trust them. [01:23] >> By the way, I don't have enough [01:25] information to talk about what's [01:26] happening in Iran, so I'm going to be [01:27] quiet. [01:28] >> Yeah. [01:28] >> Well, how about you apply that to a few [01:30] other topics, you know? [01:32] >> A few other conflicts in the world. [01:33] >> Exactly, one or two. [01:34] >> TikTok put out [music] the numbers of [01:36] posts from October 7th till now, and [01:40] it's staggering to see the ratio. It's [01:42] 109 billion [music] [01:44] to 7 billion, anti-Israel and [01:47] pro-Israel. [01:47] >> It creates a really big problem because [01:49] that means you have about a [music] [01:50] billion young people on planet Earth who [01:52] the only thing they now know about [01:54] Israel is Gaza. That's all they know. [01:57] Can't blame [music] young people who, [01:59] you know, just showed up in the world if [02:00] the one device they look at all day long [02:03] is a hundred billion to seven billion in [02:06] one direction. [music] It's going to [02:07] have an impact. [02:08] >> Obviously, this is a problem that the [02:09] Jewish people care about tremendously. [02:11] But it's not just about the Jewish [02:12] people or the state of Israel. I think [02:14] that we have entered a world in which [02:16] legacy media and [music] legacy [02:17] organizations don't hold same kind of [02:19] gravitas that they did before. [02:21] >> Right. [02:21] >> And [music] this is going to destabilize [02:24] democracies as we know it. Because if a [02:26] person has the right to vote and they [02:28] vote [music] based on what they believe, [02:31] if their mind has been hijacked by an [02:34] algorithm, [music] an agent, who's to [02:35] say that they're going to make the right [02:36] decision for the greater good of [02:38] humanity or Western values? [02:39] >> The mainstream is now the fringe. [02:42] >> Right. [02:42] >> And the fringe is now the mainstream. [02:44] Just [music] based on the numbers. It's [02:45] the people who are on Twitch and TikTok [02:48] and all these other platforms that are [02:50] getting literally [02:51] >> [music] [02:51] >> millions and millions of views. And if [02:53] you care about facts, you're you're [02:55] disadvantaged. You just make up stuff. [02:57] [music] [02:57] >> You're fine. [02:58] >> Make up the visuals, make up the audio, [03:00] make up the video, and then dump it out [03:02] before somebody who cares about the [03:03] facts even done any research. [03:05] >> Yeah. [03:05] >> And [music] so we have to have a [03:06] different strategy now. And by the way, [03:09] even though the the fringe media is [03:11] terrible, you have legacy media that's [03:13] also terrible and falling for nonsense. [03:15] [music] For instance, you know, the [03:16] picture that broke everybody's heart of [03:18] the so-called starving baby, turned out [03:20] to not be a starving child. They cut out [03:23] the full image that showed the sibling [03:26] perfectly fine. That child had a genetic [03:28] issue. It was not being starved [music] [03:30] by Israel. So when you have the [03:32] mainstream media that is falling for [03:34] propaganda [music] [03:35] or promoting propaganda and won't [03:37] apologize, and then you have this fringe [03:39] media that's massively bigger, [music] [03:41] it requires a different approach to the [03:42] information order. [03:43] >> I think that when we live in an economy [03:45] in which there's a competition for likes [03:47] and shares [music] and anger and [03:48] engagement, the dopamine hit and the [03:51] excitement and it's almost like an [03:52] addiction, like a physical addiction [03:54] that we have in humanity. If we're not [03:55] careful, this can tear us apart [03:57] entirely. [03:58] >> Do [music] not share, do not follow, do [04:00] not feed these algorithms that are based [04:03] on hatred and disinformation. [04:05] >> What we're dealing with here is bigger [04:06] [music] than the Jewish people or the [04:08] state of Israel. This is literally about [04:10] democracies as we know them. We have to [04:12] make sure [music] that we verify [04:13] everything that we see online and don't [04:15] get hooked into this dopamine addiction [04:18] that is going to damage us all. Thank [04:20] you so much, Van. [04:21] >> Thank you, sister. [04:22] >> Thank you. Bye.
What you’re seeing right now did not happen. Neither did this.
AI misinformation is no longer just fake news—it has become a superweapon in the global information war.
Noa Tishby speaks with Van Jones to discuss how artificial intelligence, social media and powerful algorithms are manipulating what billions of people see, believe and share. When anyone can manufacture a convincing image, voice or video in seconds, how do we know what is real? And what happens to democracy when voters are making decisions from inside completely different algorithmic realities?
Noa and Van examine how this crisis is shaping global perceptions of Israel, Gaza and Iran; why anti-Israel content overwhelmingly dominates young people’s social media feeds; and how propaganda can reach millions before those committed to the facts have even finished verifying the truth.
They also confront the failures of both fringe and legacy media, the addictive online economy built around anger and engagement, and the danger of allowing algorithms to hijack our shared reality.
This is bigger than Israel. It is bigger than the Jewish people. It is about the future of democracy itself.
Before you believe, like or share something online: stop, question it and verify it.
