The report opens with eyewitness accounts of explosive drone attacks in northern Israel, explaining how small FPV (first-person view) drones equipped with fiber optic cables have become a dangerous weapon against military forces. A documented assessment from May showed over 80 attacks with around 15 hits, resulting in deaths of soldiers and civilians including 19-year-old combat engineer Noai Laser.
Israel Aerospace Industries has unveiled Hawk Guard, a compact drone defense system designed to counter these threats by launching interceptor drones rather than traditional missiles. The system combines an X-band AESA radar called Storm Guard, electrooptical sensors, artificial intelligence, and a launcher to detect, track, and neutralize incoming threats at distances up to 1,000 meters with 360-degree coverage.
While Hawk Guard has completed successful tests, critical details remain unconfirmed including verified battlefield success rates, swarm defense capabilities, and whether the IDF has actually deployed it in combat. The system provides only local protection within 1,000 meters and cannot jam fiber optic-controlled drones, requiring physical interception rather than radio jamming.
Yair Pinto opens with the moment an approaching drone sent his team to the ground in northern Israel, then asks how a weapon small enough to fit in a backpack became able to stop an entire military force. He explains how Hezbollah’s FPV explosive drones work, including fiber-optic-guided models that can’t be jammed, and how they fit into Iran’s wider drone strategy from Lebanon to Yemen. Yair then looks at Israel’s answer: Israel Aerospace Industries’ new interceptor system, which uses radar, cameras and AI to launch a drone that physically stops another drone, along with Rafael’s Iron Wasp and Elbit’s networked autonomous systems. He is careful to separate the manufacturer’s claims from what has been proven in combat. The report also covers the IDF’s plans for a dedicated counter-drone force, the suspected Iranian-linked drone plot near RAF Fairford in the UK, and Houthi strikes testing Saudi defenses.
