Transcript [00:00] Watch what happens when Owen Jones tried [00:02] to challenge Emily Schrader on Israeli [00:05] settlements. Take a look. It's [00:06] >> for me, if even Mike Huckabe is using [00:10] the words uh terrorism, acts of terror [00:13] about the actions of some of these [00:14] settlers, that is a wake up and smell [00:17] the coffee moment for everybody in this [00:19] debate because you couldn't think of a [00:22] more Israel friendly guy than Mike [00:24] Huckabe, right? So if we take his word [00:27] to be what it is, which was based on [00:29] what he was told by Americans living [00:32] there, uh that there are acts of [00:34] terrorism being committed against uh the [00:37] the people on the West Bank by Israeli [00:40] settlers, then why wouldn't any other [00:43] [clears throat] democratic country along [00:44] with the 11 that we have here who've got [00:47] together on this stand up and say [00:50] enough? I mean, that that's the that's [00:51] what a democratic country should do, [00:54] isn't it? [00:55] I think there are a few specifics here [00:57] that need to be laid out. First of all, [00:59] as Don I think tried to explain, there's [01:02] over half a million people who would be [01:04] classified as settlers, including people [01:06] who are in parts of Jerusalem uh that [01:08] would be classified as settlers. And [01:10] it's important to make a distinction. [01:12] There is an extremist faction. There [01:14] are, I believe the last estimate from [01:16] the security forces were several hundred [01:18] people who are involved in groups that [01:20] are violent, that are dangerous, and I [01:21] too would classify them as terrorism. [01:23] But it's a huge gap between that and [01:26] saying that all settlers are terrorists. [01:28] >> Yeah, I don't think all settlers are [01:29] terrorists. I don't think all settlers [01:31] are terrorists at all. But if it was 200 [01:33] people from ISIS committing acts of [01:36] terrorism, then there would be no limit [01:38] to what people wanted to do by way of [01:41] response. These are quite mild sanctions [01:43] involving relatively small amounts of [01:46] money. But the bigger picture is the [01:48] British government standing up and [01:49] making a political point to the world. [01:52] We're not going to keep tolerating this [01:53] if the Israeli government keeps turning [01:55] a blind eye. [01:57] >> Yeah. Well, I I think that the Israeli [01:58] government does need to take action. But [02:00] when it comes to these sanctions and in [02:02] general the policy that we saw Meliband [02:04] promoting from day one, this is not [02:06] about what's best for Israelis or [02:08] Palestinians. This is about what's best [02:09] for them electorally. Even Owen Jones [02:11] just admitted it that this is about the [02:12] Greens. And this is about appealing and [02:14] frankly appeasing to a hardline [02:16] extremist faction of people within the [02:18] UK that they think that they can [02:20] salvage. And if you look at the double [02:22] standards being implemented, for [02:23] example, we don't see the UK [02:24] implementing anything of the sort [02:26] towards, for example, occupied Cyprus by [02:28] Turkey. We don't see the same standards [02:30] applied to other people. And I think [02:31] that's very, very dangerous. [02:33] Furthermore, this can actually backfire [02:35] not just on the UK with the partnership [02:37] that we see between the UK and Israel, [02:39] but also in regards to the practical [02:41] reality on the ground. uh what they're [02:43] doing in implementing these sanctions is [02:45] actually strengthening the right wing [02:47] which the Labor Party is against and [02:49] we're right ahead of elections. So [02:50] already that's a problem. And then when [02:52] it comes to uh the Palestinians and the [02:54] issue in the West Bank and Judea and [02:56] Samaria, we see that this is a [02:58] unilateral decision that effectively is [03:00] rewarding the Palestinian leadership for [03:03] refusing to negotiate. This isn't about [03:05] a two-state solution. This isn't about a [03:07] future Palestinian state. This is about [03:09] a domestic political issue in the UK and [03:12] even the E1 settlements you're talking [03:14] about 1,200 homes in a 12 square [03:17] kilometer area. Okay, this is a tiny [03:18] area. This is not something that is [03:21] going to divide the West Bank. This is [03:23] not something that's going to take over [03:24] the West Bank. And it's important that [03:25] we're specific when we talk about these [03:27] things. Does that mean that it's okay or [03:29] not okay? That's a different discussion. [03:31] But the exaggerated rhetoric, look at [03:33] this map. You think that just on that [03:35] can divide the West Bank? It just it [03:38] isn't logical. [03:39] >> Let me just quote I don't often quote [03:42] >> it's very convenient that the fact that [03:43] the Jordan Valley is not on that map [03:45] which Israel basically has kicked all [03:46] Palestinians out of and does not allow [03:48] them to basically enter that area. [03:50] >> What does that have to do with dividing [03:51] the West Bank in half? 12 square [03:53] kilometers. [03:54] >> They have already divided the West Bank [03:56] in half. It's not going to [03:59] you've got to hand it to you. You've got [04:01] to hand it to you. You are an extremely [04:03] effective propagandist for the [04:04] expansionist Israeli government. But we [04:06] should be clear about the fact that the [04:07] West Bank has already been divided. [04:10] Palestinians going one town to another [04:13] within the West Bank cannot do it [04:14] without going through Israeli border [04:16] controls and Israeli checkpoints. Israel [04:18] has effectively already divided the [04:20] entire West Bank. It is acknowledged [04:21] universally the fact that the extent of [04:23] settlement expansion throughout the [04:24] Palestinian territories has made the [04:26] emergence of a continu contiguous [04:27] Palestinian state impossible. That is [04:29] why the peace process failed. By the [04:30] way, throughout the 1990s, it's not [04:33] talking about how anti-lement policies [04:35] are empowering the right. You have the [04:37] exact opposite. What you have, Emily, [04:40] Emily, allow me to allow me to finish my [04:41] sentence, please. What you have here is [04:43] that we've had a policy throughout the [04:45] entire 1990s of the United the entire [04:48] world effectively coddling the Israeli [04:50] right, not imposing any sanctions, best [04:52] effectively just begging, THIS IS [04:54] EXACTLY WHAT they're doing, be nice and [04:55] accept peace and end THE OCCUPATION. AND [04:58] WHAT HAPPENED? The exact opposite. [05:00] >> Nothing has changed. There is zero [05:01] accountability for the Palestinian [05:03] leadership. [05:04] >> Do you mind allowing? Do you mind [05:06] telling her to let me finish my [05:07] sentence? [05:07] >> And let him finish his sentence. [05:08] >> What we have What we have is an entire [05:12] discourse, an entire international [05:14] community that has codled the Israeli [05:15] right for way too long. They've never [05:17] imposed any consequences on Israeli [05:18] settlement expansion. And the result of [05:20] that was relentless Israeli settlement [05:22] expansion. Palestinians being thrown out [05:23] of their homes, including in East [05:25] Jerusalem, so Israeli settlers can come [05:26] and take them over. So the method of [05:28] cuddling Israel and the right, has [05:31] clearly not led to anything positive. So [05:33] for the first time, we're beginning to [05:34] say that there should be negative [05:35] consequences for bad behavior. If Russia [05:38] had taken over part of the United States [05:40] illegally and started driving out [05:41] Americans out of part of the United [05:42] States and bringing Russian settlers to [05:44] come and live in those areas, we would [05:46] not have a dispute about whether we [05:47] should be boycotting that enterprise or [05:49] encouraging it and coddling it. She [05:51] absolutely nailed it. The idea that Jews [05:54] in Judea and Samaria shouldn't be [05:57] allowed to live in their ancestral [05:59] homeland is insanity. And the entire [06:02] world freaking out about it is even more [06:05] insane. Like we are somehow living in a [06:07] civilization where Juden Rin is okay in [06:11] the elite is totally mainstream. that [06:14] ridding the land of the Jewish people [06:17] just because Palestinians don't want to [06:19] live near them is considered 100% [06:23] kosher. And that that seems to be the [06:26] normal, you know, mainstream idea that [06:30] anytime any Jew living in the West Bank, [06:33] any Jew living in Judea and Samaria is [06:36] considered to be a terrorist that needs [06:38] to be cracked down upon. And I actually [06:41] am kind of disgusted in Mike Huckabe in [06:45] what he did calling Jewish settlers [06:47] terrorist because he gave even though [06:50] maybe he didn't mean it himself, but he [06:52] gave the other side tons of ammo to use [06:56] against Israel. It's a totally insane [06:59] comparison to compare Jewish people [07:01] living in their land to terrorists and [07:04] people like Hamas who butcher murder uh [07:08] babies in their cribs. Thank you for [07:10] watching and I'll see you in the next [07:12] one.
