After releasing his summer [02:12] safety plan in May, promising jobs for [02:14] youth, violence interruption work, and [02:17] support services for disenfranchised [02:19] communities, the mayor was asked today [02:22] if he feels his plan is failing. Johnson [02:25] says what happened this weekend only [02:26] pushes him to double down on his [02:29] efforts. [02:30] >> What didn't work over the last 60 years, [02:33] you're talking about a plan that we put [02:34] forth in May over the course of a couple [02:37] of months. We [03:13] continue to have this slow drip mass [03:14] shooting every weekend. If this were a [03:17] singular event, this would take national [03:19] headlines. But because this happened [03:20] over a 4-day time frame, we don't even [03:22] raise an eyebrow to what's going on here [03:24] in the city of Chicago. [03:34] Just outside there's been a deadly [03:35] shooting in front of a strip mall. [03:37] Chicago police tell us a 22year-old man [03:40] was sitting in a car near 43rd in New [03:42] Wentworth around 4 this morning. Two [03:45] vehicles pulled up and several people [03:47] inside them started shooting before [03:49] driving off. The victim was rushed to [03:52] the hospital but did not survive. I [06:16] don't believe that just simply putting [06:18] out an arbitrary number around police [06:20] officers is the answer. What I'm saying [06:22] is policing and affordable housing. It's [06:25] policing and mental and behavioral [06:27] health care services. It's policing and [06:29] youth employment. It's a full package. [06:32] Of course, we want to make sure that our [06:33] police department is fully supported. [06:35] That's why I've invested in our [06:36] detectives bureau because what we have [06:38] seen in the city of Chicago when we [06:41] solve crime, it acts and serves as a [06:43] deterrent. It's policing and all of the [06:46] other efforts that we're doing. Here's [06:47] the last thing that I'll say to that. [06:49] The federal government could work [06:51] stronger to coordinate with my police [06:53] department to get guns off the streets [06:55] of Chicago. We've seen these [06:57] coordination efforts work. Just a couple [06:59] of weeks ago, the ATF working with my [07:02] police department, we um removed over [07:05] 150 guns off the streets of Chicago that [07:08] were trafficked in uh through [07:10] Mississippi and Indiana. No one is [07:13] saying that police [07:14] >> I think we got enough. But you see No, [07:16] no, it's another clip. You see what he's [07:19] saying? [08:05] When you increase the level of police [08:07] patrol and visibility, people begin to [08:09] do crimes in a different way than out in [08:11] the open like we see in Chicago on one [08:15] weekend whereund and some people were [08:16] shot.
