What is “the truth”? Does a photograph document reality – or create it? In our new series, we delve into the complex use of photography during the Holocaust: its role in propaganda, its power as a means of resistance, and our responsibility today when examining these historical images. In our first video, we explore the role photography played within Nazi ideology. Following the Nazis' rise to power in 1933, photography and cinema became critical tools for shaping public opinion and achieving political goals. The regime carefully engineered images of power, unity and control, and alongside them, portrayals of the enemy. Watch to learn how the camera was weaponized to promote Nazi ideology, and what our role is when we view these photographs today.
