[00:26] From [00:30] the [music] pulpit of the First Baptist [00:31] Church of Dallas, Texas, this is Pathway [00:34] to Victory with Dr. Robert Jeff. [00:37] >> Hi, I'm Robert Jefferson. Welcome again [00:39] to Pathway to Victory. [music] [00:41] There's no doubt that we're living in an [00:43] increasingly atheistic world. [music] [00:45] But even as many turn their backs on [00:47] God, the Bible teaches that one day the [00:50] world will be united under a new false [00:53] system of belief. And today we're going [00:55] to see how that false [music] religion [00:58] symbolized by the harlot in Revelation [01:00] 17 points toward the earth's coming [01:03] destruction. My message is titled [01:06] Religion Gone Wrong on [music] today's [01:09] edition of Pathway to Victory. [01:17] The book of Revelation is filled with [01:19] fantastic imagery and vivid depictions [01:21] that many believers find intimidating. [01:24] But God's word was never [music] meant [01:25] to confuse or discourage you. In his [01:27] best-selling book, Final Conquest, Dr. [01:30] Robert Jeffris walks you through [music] [01:31] Revelation verse by verse, explaining [01:34] its signs and symbols in plain terms you [01:36] can understand. Request your copy of [01:38] Final Conquest when you sign up to [01:40] become a Pathway partner or when you [01:43] give a generous gift to support the [01:45] ministry of Pathway to Victory. [01:55] You know, one thing we've seen through [01:58] this Corona virus pandemic is the [02:01] [music] uncertainty of life itself. [02:04] You know, I remember so well on New [02:06] Year's Day of this year. I sat down as I [02:09] do every New Year's Day with my legal [02:11] tablet and made all of the plans goals [02:14] for the new year of what I thought I was [02:16] going to do. I imagine as I was writing [02:19] down those plans, God was laughing his [02:20] head off in heaven because I ended up [02:23] not doing one of those things. God had [02:26] something else for us to do. We think we [02:28] know what's going to happen. We have no [02:30] idea what's going to happen. That's why [02:32] James said in James 4:13, "Come now, [02:35] those of you who say today or tomorrow [02:38] we'll go to such and such a city and [02:41] engage in profit and stay there for a [02:44] year." You do not know what your life [02:47] will be like tomorrow. Isn't that true? [02:50] Haven't we learned that? But there's [02:52] something else I've seen throughout this [02:55] Corona virus pandemic and it relates to [02:58] our study of Revelation. To me, it's [03:00] become so clear how fragile [03:04] our world really is. [03:07] I mean, just think about it. This almost [03:09] invisible virus has brought the world to [03:12] its knees. [03:14] It didn't take much to destroy the [03:17] health system. It didn't take much to [03:20] destroy the economy. It didn't take much [03:23] to cause strife between nations. Uh this [03:27] world can unravel very very quickly. And [03:31] although it hasn't unraveled yet, one [03:33] day it is going to unravel completely. [03:37] And that will set the stage for the [03:39] world dictator, the world leader we know [03:42] as Antichrist, who will preede the [03:44] return of Jesus Christ himself. And [03:47] that's where we are today in our study [03:50] of the book of Revelation. If you have [03:52] your Bibles, I want you to turn to the [03:54] book of the Revelation. Now I'm going to [03:56] take five minutes and give you a five [04:00] minute summary of the book of [04:01] Revelation. Remember this book has one [04:05] theme and that is be obedient to Christ. [04:09] Why? Because Jesus Christ is returning [04:13] to earth one day soon to reward the [04:16] righteous and to punish the unrighteous. [04:20] This is what the theme of revelation is. [04:22] When John wrote this uh letter, he was [04:24] on the island of Patmas exiled because [04:27] of his faith in Christ. The world was [04:29] beginning to go through persecution for [04:32] their Christian beliefs. They were [04:34] getting discouraged. And John said, [04:35] "Don't be discouraged. Jesus is coming [04:39] back again. Remain faithful." And while [04:43] he was on that island of Patmas, Jesus [04:46] appeared to him. And in chapter 1 verse [04:49] 19, he said, "Write the things which you [04:52] have seen and the things which are and [04:55] the things which shall take place after [04:57] these things." And in that verse, [05:00] chapter 1 verse 19, you see the [05:02] three-fold division of the book of [05:04] Revelation. That's the outline. Chapter [05:06] one, write down the things that you have [05:09] seen. That refers to the vision John saw [05:12] in chapter 1 of Jesus Christ in his [05:15] glorified state, not as some little [05:17] wimpy rabbi that most people imagine him [05:20] to be. Jesus was king of kings and lord [05:23] of lords. And John caught a vision of [05:25] Christ as he will return and reign over [05:28] this earth. The things which you have [05:29] seen. And then he said, write down the [05:31] things which are. That's chapters two [05:34] and three. The messages to the seven [05:37] churches in Asia Minor. uh messages that [05:40] are relevant to our church today about [05:42] what God wants in each of us. And then [05:45] the third and final division, which is [05:48] the majority of Revelation, write down [05:50] the things which shall take place after [05:52] these things. That's chapters 4 to 22. [05:56] And that's about what is yet to come. [05:59] Revelation is focused on the future, not [06:01] the past. Some theologians say this has [06:05] already happened. No, it's yet to come. [06:07] the things that are yet to come. When we [06:10] come to chapter 4, the church has [06:13] already been raptured into heaven. That [06:15] midnight cry has already been sounded. [06:17] In chapters four and five, you see the [06:19] church worshiping Christ after being [06:22] rewarded. But remember in that picture [06:24] of the throne of God, you hear the [06:27] thunder. You see the lightning [06:29] representing something terrible is about [06:31] to happen on earth. And beginning in [06:34] chapter 6, we get into the final seven [06:36] years of earth's history. We call it the [06:38] tribulation. It is a time that God pours [06:42] out his judgment on the earth for one [06:44] final time. Why? First of all, for [06:47] salvation, to bring people one last time [06:50] to give them a chance to trust in Christ [06:52] as savior. But it's not just a time of [06:54] salvation. It's a time of condemnation. [06:57] For God to pour out his wrath on those [06:59] who refuse to believe. And that is why I [07:02] am absolutely certain we the church will [07:05] not be there during the great [07:07] tribulation. [07:09] We're not going to escape persecution or [07:11] tribulation, but we are going to escape [07:14] God's condemnation. [07:16] Romans 8:1 says, "There is therefore now [07:18] no condemnation awaiting those who [07:21] belong to Christ Jesus." If you are a [07:24] Christian, you never have to fear the [07:26] wrath of God. And the tribulation is [07:28] about the wrath of God being poured out [07:31] upon the earth. And it comes in the form [07:33] of three judgments. In chapter six, the [07:36] seal judgments. In chapters 8 and nine, [07:39] the trumpet judgments. And then in [07:41] chapter 16, as we looked at last time, [07:45] the final judgments, the bold judgments [07:48] that are poured upon the earth. And last [07:50] time we looked at those seven bold [07:52] judgments. And when we get to the end [07:54] end of chapter 16, we are at the very [07:58] precipice of the return of Jesus Christ. [08:01] Armageddon is occurring. The Lord is [08:03] about to return. But when we get to [08:06] chapter 17, Jesus hits the pause button [08:08] in his message to John. He says, "Now [08:11] John, before I describe my return, I [08:14] want to describe two other things about [08:17] the tribulation you and your readers [08:19] need to understand." Hey, John does this [08:22] often, by the way, in Revelation. He'll [08:23] get up to the brink of something and [08:25] then there's a pause and he goes off to [08:28] explain something else. He does that [08:29] here in chapter 16. We're at the brink [08:32] of the return of Christ. That's [08:34] described in chapter 19. But in chapter [08:37] 17 and 18, John is going to describe [08:40] something else he saw that was related [08:42] to the antichrist. And he does so using [08:46] the term Babylon. [08:49] Babylon. He's going to talk to us about [08:53] Babylon. [08:54] Now, Babylon is central not only in the [08:58] book of Revelation, but in the Bible. In [09:00] the book of Revelation, 50 out of 404 [09:03] verses deal with the judgment of [09:06] Babylon. What is Babylon? Quickly, [09:09] Babylon is used three ways in the Bible. [09:12] Sometimes it refers to the actual [09:14] ancient city of Babylon, the king of the [09:16] Babylonian Empire. Remember Saddam [09:19] Hussein? Remember that character? He [09:22] wanted to rebuild ancient Babylon to the [09:24] glory of the days of Nebuchadnezzar. [09:27] There are some Bible scholars who [09:28] believe that during the tribulation, the [09:31] Antichrist will rebuild Babylon and that [09:34] will actually be the Antichrist [09:35] headquarters. I don't believe that for a [09:38] number of reasons, but some Bible [09:40] scholars do. So, sometimes it refers to [09:42] the city of Babylon. Other times the [09:45] word Babylon is a code for another city. [09:48] For example, in 1 Peter 5:13, the [09:51] Apostle Peter Peter says, "Greet those [09:53] who are in Babylon." He was referring to [09:57] ancient Rome. It was a code word for [10:00] Rome, a corrupt city. [10:03] But thirdly, and I think this is how [10:05] John uses it here in Jesus, Babylon [10:08] refers not to an actual city, but to a [10:11] system. We talk about Wall Street. [10:14] What's happening on Wall Street? We're [10:16] not just talking about a street in [10:17] southern Manhattan. We're talking about [10:19] the economic system of not only the [10:22] United States but of the world. Well, [10:24] when we talk about uh Babylon, we're not [10:26] just referring to the city. We're [10:28] referring to a system. And in this case, [10:31] it represents the empire over which [10:34] antichrist will re re uh will uh rule. [10:38] Now there are two aspects to the [10:41] antichrist empire. There is religious [10:43] Babylon as we'll look at today. It is a [10:46] false religious system that will aid [10:48] Antichrist in his rise to power. But [10:51] then there's a political and economic [10:54] system of Babylon that we'll look at [10:56] next time in chapter 18. But let's look [10:59] at this religious system called Babylon [11:03] over which the antichrist will preside. [11:07] This false religious system is described [11:10] as a harlot. Look at verses 1 and two of [11:13] chapter 17. [11:15] Then one of the seven angels who had the [11:18] seven bowls. Remember those are the bold [11:21] judgments of chapter 16. When we get to [11:24] the end of chapter 16, they've already [11:26] been all poured out. But remember, he's [11:28] rewinding the tape here. He says, "Let's [11:31] go back to one of those seven angels who [11:34] had the seven bowls before they were [11:36] poured out." And one of those angels [11:38] spoke to me, saying, "Come here. I will [11:41] show you the judgment of the great [11:43] harlot who sits on many waters." Now, [11:48] you know what a harlot is? A prostitute. [11:51] Somebody who seduces people for money [11:54] with the promise of sexual fulfillment. [11:58] A harlot. Now this is a harlot John is [12:01] looking at who sits on many waters. That [12:04] is she presides over many people of many [12:07] different nations. [12:09] Now it's interesting in the Bible [12:13] the Israelites are called referred to as [12:15] God's wife. [12:18] Israel was so-called married to God. And [12:20] when Israel chased after other gods, God [12:23] accused her of adultery. Before we go [12:27] any further in today's message, I just [12:29] want to take a quick moment to thank you [12:31] for streaming Pathway to Victory on [12:34] YouTube. [13:12] Thank you for being here with us today [13:14] on YouTube. Now, let's get back to [13:16] today's message. Because she went after [13:19] other gods, other lovers, so to speak. [13:22] But here, those who follow after these [13:25] false religions are not accused of [13:28] adultery. They were accused of engaging [13:30] in prostitution. [13:31] They go to bed, so to speak, with a [13:34] prostitute. Israel had a relationship. [13:38] She was married to God. So, her sexual [13:40] sin was adultery. Here, it's [13:43] prostitution. She goes to bed with the [13:46] harlot. And notice that this harlot uh [13:50] commits immorality with first of all the [13:52] kings of the earth. As we'll see in just [13:55] a moment um this false religious system [13:59] seduces kings. They use each other to [14:02] achieve their own goals. But not only [14:05] that, she seduces those who dwell on the [14:09] earth. Remember that phrase in the book [14:11] of Revelation? It refers to unbelievers, [14:14] people who have their minds on worldly [14:17] things instead of heavenly things. And [14:20] because of that, they missed the rapture [14:21] of the church. They are still on the [14:23] earth and they are seduced by this [14:27] harlot. Now, today, false religions [14:31] seduce people all of the time. Whether [14:33] it's Islam or Mormonism, those are [14:37] religious prostitutes that seduce people [14:40] and keep them from the truth of God. [14:43] There are certain aberrations of [14:44] Christianity itself that can be [14:47] described as religious prostitutes. The [14:50] prosperity gospel you hear so often [14:53] today is a religious harlot. It is [14:57] immoral to tell people that if you just [15:01] give enough money or pray hard enough, [15:03] you will be spared from any problems in [15:06] life and you will be guaranteed health [15:08] and wealth. That is religious [15:11] prostitution to seduce people with that [15:14] kind of a lie. It will be true in the [15:17] final days too. She will seduce not just [15:20] kings and those who the kings on the [15:24] earth. He will also seduce those who [15:26] dwell upon the earth. Those unbelievers [15:30] have rejected the truth of God. They [15:32] missed the rapture. So they will be [15:34] seduced by a lie. In 2 Thessalonians [15:37] 2:1, Paul says, "God will send upon them [15:41] a deluding influence so that they will [15:44] believe what is false." Now, when we get [15:48] to verse three, we're actually going to [15:50] see this harlot in great detail. Verses [15:53] one and two, John was invited to see the [15:56] harlot. Now look at what he saw. Verse [15:58] three. And the angel carried me away, [16:01] John said, in the spirit, into a [16:03] wilderness. We don't know if the spirit [16:05] actually took him to Saudi Arabia, to [16:08] the Sahar desert, uh, or if this was a [16:11] spiritual experience. But wherever it [16:14] was, the angel took John into the [16:16] wilderness, and he saw this vision of a [16:19] woman sitting on a scarlet beast full of [16:23] blasphemous names, having seven heads [16:25] and 10 horns. Now, that's a description [16:28] of the beast. We'll see in a moment who [16:30] that beast is. I'll give you a heads up. [16:32] It's the Antichrist, the world leader. [16:34] But first of all, John's going to [16:36] describe this woman who was sitting on [16:39] the beast himself. Look at the image of [16:42] the harlot, how it's described. The [16:45] woman was clothed in purple, that [16:48] denotes royalty, and scarlet, that's [16:50] luxury, and adorned with gold and [16:53] precious stones and pearls, having in [16:56] her hand a gold cup full of [16:58] abominations, and of the unclean things [17:01] of her immorality. [17:04] This woman was beautifully dressed. She [17:07] had a golden cup. We'll see what was in [17:09] that cup in just a moment. But the thing [17:12] I want you to see about this woman is [17:14] she is seen riding the antichrist. [17:18] Now to ride a beast seems to imply that [17:22] you are giving direction to that animal. [17:25] You are in control of that animal. And [17:27] to many people it will appear that this [17:29] false religious system is controlling [17:32] the government of the Antichrist. But [17:34] indeed, as we'll see, it's the [17:36] Antichrist who is supporting her as [17:39] well. They are in an unholy alliance, [17:43] this false religion of the earth and the [17:46] government at that time. Now, let me [17:49] just stop here and make an obvious [17:52] point. Throughout history, there has [17:55] always been an uneasy relationship [17:58] between the church and the government. [18:02] Church and government have always made [18:04] strange bedfellows [18:07] and there's always been a difficult [18:09] relationship between the church and the [18:11] government and that's led Christians to [18:14] adopt one of three positions about what [18:17] should our relationship as a church be [18:21] to the government. Some people have [18:23] adopted the idea of isolation. [18:27] government is so dirty and I am so pure [18:33] that I dare not get involved in [18:35] government or politics lest I taint [18:38] myself and become a sinner just like [18:40] those politicians. And we've got some [18:43] self-righteous Christians today who [18:45] adopt that idea. The church should have [18:48] no role in the government whatsoever. [18:51] There needs to be this wall of [18:53] separation between the church and the [18:56] government. Of course, the left loves [18:59] that idea, a wall of separation. [19:03] But to them, it is a one-sided wall. [19:07] They don't want the church trying to [19:08] influence them. But the government, [19:11] especially the left, has no problem with [19:13] trying to control the church. They are [19:16] happy to tell us when we can and cannot [19:18] be open. They're happy to tell us who we [19:20] can hire and can't hire. They love to [19:23] control the church. They just don't want [19:25] the church to have any influence on [19:28] them. That is a totally unbiblical idea. [19:32] Jesus said to Christians, "You are to be [19:35] salt and light in this decaying and [19:37] darkening world." Yes, our primary [19:40] mission is to win people to faith in [19:42] Christ. But salt in Jesus day was a [19:45] preservative. It didn't prevent decay, [19:48] but it delayed the decay of the meat. [19:50] And he said, "I want you as my people to [19:53] permeate, to penetrate, to influence [19:56] every part of this world that I've [19:59] made." And that includes the government. [20:02] But salt can be of any help as long as [20:05] it remains in the salt shaker. As long [20:08] as it it's in that salt shaker, it [20:10] doesn't do anything. to have influence [20:13] for righteousness, you have to get out [20:15] of the shaker and penetrate the meat. [20:18] And it's the same way with Christians. [20:19] We've got to get out of the church and [20:21] get into society if we're going to [20:23] influence society. So this idea of [20:26] isolating yourself, getting in your holy [20:29] huddle until the Lord returns is [20:31] completely antithetical to scripture. [20:33] Now there's the other extreme. There are [20:36] some people who isolate themselves from [20:38] government. There are others who too [20:40] closely identify with the government. [20:42] And frankly, that's the problem with [20:44] this world religion in the final days. [20:47] She, the harlot, the false religious [20:49] system will be so close to that beast, [20:52] you can't tell one from the other. You [20:54] can't tell who's controlling whom. And [20:57] that's an equally dangerous problem to [21:00] be in. Now, look, [21:04] I make it very clear. [21:06] I am not of any political party. The [21:10] biblical perspective is to influence [21:13] government. That's what the church has [21:14] been called to do. To influence [21:17] government. Because when you influence [21:19] government, you're influencing the [21:21] nation. If we learned anything from [21:24] Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany, we [21:26] learned a leader is the one who [21:28] determines the morality and the [21:30] spiritual direction of a nation. And I [21:33] believe it's better to have a [21:35] God-fearing leader, or at least one who [21:37] follows God's policies than one who [21:39] doesn't follows God's policies. And I [21:42] believe that America is a better place [21:45] to live. It is a better country if we [21:49] will stop the slaughter of the unborn, [21:51] 600,000 a year, through abortion. I [21:55] think God will bless our country if we [21:57] do that. I think America is a better [21:59] place if we allow children to pray and [22:02] to read the Bible in school and to teach [22:04] God as someone to be feared and obeyed [22:06] in our school as he was for 150 years. I [22:10] think God blesses that kind of nation. I [22:13] think our nation is a better place if we [22:15] stand on the right side of Israel [22:17] instead of against Israel and do what [22:20] God says and support the eye, the apple [22:23] of his eye as the Bible calls the nation [22:25] of Israel. You see, God is no respector [22:28] of people or nations. God will bless any [22:33] nation that reverences him, and he will [22:36] judge any nation, including the United [22:38] States, that rejects him. That's why the [22:41] Psalmist said Psalm 33:12, "Blessed, [22:44] happy is the nation whose God is the [22:47] Lord." Now, that is our role to [22:49] influence. That's not what's going on [22:52] here. This harlot sits on top of the [22:55] Antichrist. She uses him, he uses her. [22:58] And notice the name of the harlot. Verse [23:01] five. And on her forehead, a name was [23:04] written, a mystery, Babylon the great, [23:08] the mother of harlots and of the [23:10] abominations of the earth. You have to [23:13] understand a little history here. In the [23:15] first century, when John wrote, "If you [23:17] went to a brothel, the prostitutes would [23:20] wear a band around their head and on [23:21] that band would be their name." You not [23:24] only knew what they were, you knew who [23:26] they were. Well, this image, this [23:29] harlot, she has a name on her forehead. [23:32] That name is Babylon the Great, the [23:35] mother of harlots. [23:38] This woman is not just one of the other [23:40] prostitutes. She is the madam of the [23:43] brothel. She is the chief prostitute. [23:47] She is not just another false religion. [23:49] She is the mother of all false [23:51] religions. Her name is Babylon. [23:56] That fascinating name Babylon denotes [23:59] the source of every false religion in [24:02] the world today. I don't have time to [24:05] get into it, but in the 1800s, [24:09] 1862, a Scottish minister named [24:12] Alexander Hlip wrote a book called The [24:15] Two Babylons. [24:17] And he started and traced Babylon where [24:20] it started back to Genesis 11. Remember [24:23] the story of Babel. After the flood, God [24:27] commanded the people to scatter [24:29] throughout the nation to throughout the [24:32] world and to form different nations. [24:34] They were to scatter. [24:42] The allure of this false religious [24:44] system paired with the charm of the [24:46] Antichrist will be a deadly [music] [24:48] combination. And John's vision in [24:50] Revelation 17 reveals that many will be [24:53] deceived in those last days. In a [24:56] culture so full of confusion and [24:58] counterfeit [music] truth, people need [25:00] the truth more than ever. And for 30 [25:03] years, your faithful giving has helped [25:05] Pathway [music] to Victory reach people [25:06] on every platform available to us and [25:09] pierce the darkness with the light [25:11] [music] of God's word. That same [25:13] commitment is what will carry us into [25:15] the next 30 years and beyond. Thank you [25:18] for making it all possible. Now, please [25:21] stay right there. [music] I'll be back [25:22] with more Pathway to Victory in just a [25:25] moment. Our world is growing darker by [25:28] the day. But the book of Revelation [25:30] teaches that one day soon the darkness [25:32] will pass and our long- awaited King of [25:35] Kings and Lord of Lords will return [25:37] [music] and make his final conquest. The [25:39] book of Revelation isn't just the [25:41] [music] unveiling of future events. It's [25:44] the unveiling of a person, Jesus Christ. [25:48] And in Final Conquest, my exclusive [25:50] commentary on [music] Revelation, you'll [25:53] discover the great hope we have in the [25:55] triumphant return of our Lord [music] [25:58] Jesus Christ. [26:00] Request your copy of Final Conquest when [26:02] you give a generous gift to support the [26:04] ministry of Pathway to Victory or when [26:06] you become a Pathway partner. [26:28] >> And these line up exactly with the seven [26:31] sealed judgments we see in Revelation [26:35] 6. In light of current events and with [26:38] [music] the return of Christ so clearly [26:40] on the horizon, sharing the gospel [26:42] through Pathway to Victory has [music] [26:43] never been more important or more [26:45] urgent. So, thank you for supporting [26:47] Pathway to Victory as together we pierce [26:50] the darkness of our day with the light [26:52] of God's word. [26:56] Religious harlots are not unfamiliar to [26:59] us today. Our [music] world is filled [27:01] with false religions and aberrations of [27:03] Christianity that draw multitudes of [27:06] people [music] away from God. And it [27:08] will be no different in the last days [27:10] when the harlot of Babylon leads [music] [27:13] the world astray. Next time, we'll [27:15] uncover the identity of the beast she [27:18] rides. And I'll show you how to tell a [27:20] true faith [music] from a counterfeit [27:22] faith. Stay tuned for a preview of [27:24] what's coming up next in our series, [27:26] Final [music] [27:27] Conquest. [27:29] To believe, to confess that Jesus is [27:32] Lord means to believe that Jesus is the [27:36] unique son of God who came to earth in [27:39] human form, who ascended into heaven and [27:41] is coming [music] back one day to [27:43] reclaim this earth for himself. That's [27:46] the Jesus you have to believe in in [27:48] order to be saved.
