[12:15] >> Even those I haven't seen before. [12:19] Those I haven't seen for a while. and it [12:22] will be good to see those that we're not [12:24] seeing yet. [12:26] So, we'll continue on page five. [12:31] Uh if you'll stand [12:33] >> page five of what [12:35] >> of the uh [12:36] >> No. [12:37] >> What? Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Um sorry. [12:47] >> Yeah. [12:50] Skip the cog. [12:53] Okay. [13:09] >> Page one. [13:10] >> Yeah, we're in page one. Big one. [13:16] >> Blessed be the Lord who is blessed [13:18] forever and ever. [13:20] >> Who is the first [13:24] and aside from him there is no God. [13:27] Blessed, praise, glorified, honored and [13:30] exalted be the name of the king of kings [13:35] he is the first and the last and beside [13:39] him there is no God. Extol him in the [13:42] heavens. Glory is his name. Rejoice [13:45] before his face. His name is honored [13:48] beyond all blessing and praise. Blessed [13:51] be his name whose glorious kingdom is [13:54] forever. Let the name of the Lord be [13:56] blessed forever and ever. [13:59] >> And now we turn to your Shabbat morning [14:02] sad page six. [14:14] Please stand if you are able. Facing [14:15] east towards Jerusalem. [14:30] Adonchech. [14:59] Where are you? [15:17] Believe our [15:19] bish. Fore! [15:22] Foreign! Foreign! [15:32] for [15:59] heaven. [16:13] Eloh. [16:16] And Yeshua said, [16:26] I'm sure [17:21] Make a [17:31] No, [17:35] save. [17:46] >> So, there's always the question of where [17:48] do we put the shahanu? [17:50] And of course, we didn't have a service [17:52] last night. So, it is the first time [17:56] we're all gathering together to [17:58] celebrate Roshashana together in one [18:01] year, right? And so, because we are [18:04] using the moxur and the sedur together, [18:08] we are going to do the shahekanu before [18:11] the amida because the amida is going to [18:15] be a mixture of both the rashashana [18:17] liturgy and Shabbat morning liturgy. [18:20] Okay. And also just a quick note, there [18:22] are apples in the basket by the [18:25] children's stuff back there for the [18:27] children, but there are more than enough [18:30] for the children we have. And if you [18:32] find that you need to eat something [18:34] during the service, please do not be [18:37] shy. Go grab an apple or read the [18:39] children's snacks in the in the uh [18:41] sanctuary closet, okay? It's an extra [18:45] long service and we want you to be [18:47] robust in your participating. [18:50] So, [18:56] oh, sorry. We're on page one of the [18:58] moxur. Let's do it together. [19:01] This is a little We haven't done this [19:03] since 2009. The back and forth. So, [19:06] we're going to be doing a little awkward [19:08] traffic directing right [19:11] together. [19:26] Blessed are you, oh Lord our God, King [19:28] of the universe who has kept us alive, [19:32] sustained us and enabled us to reach [19:35] this season. And we continue in the [19:38] moxur with the Amid. We ask you to stand [19:41] if you are able. [19:48] We are on page two. [19:55] >> Ready. [19:56] >> Oh, oh Lord, open my lips that my mouth [20:00] may declare your praise. [20:02] >> Deserving of praise are you, oh Lord our [20:05] God and God of our fathers, God of [20:08] Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob, [20:11] the great mighty revered and exalted God [20:15] who bestows faithful love and is master [20:18] of all mindful of the patriarch's love [20:21] for you. Oh [20:38] God of life, oh king, helper, redeemer, [20:42] and shield, deserving of praise are you, [20:44] oh Lord, Abraham. [20:47] >> You are mighty forever, O Lord. You [20:50] bring to life the dead. You are [20:52] powerfully able to save. You sustain the [20:55] living with faithful love. You bring the [20:58] dead to life with great mercy. You [21:00] support all who fall and heal the sick. [21:03] You free the enslaved and are faithful [21:06] to those who sleep in the dust. Who is [21:09] like you, Lord of might? Who can be [21:12] compared to you, O king? You order death [21:15] and restore life and make your salvation [21:17] flourish. Yes, you are faithful to raise [21:21] the dead. Deserving and praise are you, [21:23] oh Lord, who raises the dead. [21:26] >> Hallelujah. [21:33] And we continue [21:40] with the Lord is king on page two. And [21:43] you will be singing the refrain after [21:46] each of the English things after my [21:48] beginning. [21:59] Which means the Lord is king. The Lord [22:02] was king. [24:54] >> All Torah lovers affirm. [24:59] >> All alike repeat. [25:16] And now we turn to the Shabbat sedur [25:18] page 11 with the kaduca. And we rise [25:22] also if you are able. [25:41] Amar, [26:04] you are holy and your name is holy and [26:07] the holy ones daily give you praise. [26:10] Blessed are you, oh Lord, the holy God. [26:13] Being found in appearance as a man, he [26:16] humbled himself by becoming obedient to [26:19] the point of death, even death on the [26:21] cross. For this reason also, God exalted [26:24] him and bestowed on him. [26:29] So that [26:30] every knee will bow [26:33] in [26:35] under the earth. and every tongue will [26:37] confess that Yeshua is Lord to the glory [26:41] of God the Father. [26:42] >> And we turn now to um first uh page 14 [26:47] and then we are going to move to page 34 [26:52] Shamro. Moses rejoiced in the gift [26:55] bestowed on him when you called him [26:57] faithful servant placing on his head a [26:59] crown of glory as he stood before you on [27:02] Mount Si. In his arms he carried the two [27:05] tablets of stone on which the [27:06] commandment of Shabbat was inscribed. [27:09] Thus it is also written in your Torah. [27:11] And we turn to page 34 [27:17] in the [27:17] >> Sudor. [27:30] But [27:44] the door [27:49] is [27:53] he [28:00] Sh. [29:35] You drew us near, O king, to your [29:38] service and called us by your great and [29:41] holy name. [29:49] >> And you and you gave us in love, O Lord [29:51] our God, this Sabbath day and this day [29:54] of remembrance, a day for recalling the [29:57] sounding of the chauffear, a holy [29:59] gathering recalling our liberation from [30:02] Egypt. [30:05] Oh God and God of our fathers, remember [30:08] us and accept us as you remember our [30:11] fathers, Jerusalem, your holy city, and [30:14] all your people of the house of Israel, [30:16] and especially Messiah Yeshua, the son [30:19] of David, through whom you bring [30:21] deliverance and well-being, grace, [30:23] faithful love and mercy, life and peace [30:27] on this day of remembrance. [30:50] Our God and God of our fathers, reign [30:53] over all the universe in your glory and [30:56] in your splendor be exalted above all [30:58] the earth. Shine forth in the majesty of [31:01] your conquering power over all the [31:03] inhabitants of your world that every [31:06] created thing may realize that you made [31:08] it and every creature understand that [31:12] you created it. and all that has breath [31:16] may declare. Sanctify [31:27] us by your commandments and grant our [31:29] portion in your Torah. Satisfy us with [31:33] your goodness and gladden us with your [31:35] salvation. Cause us, O Lord our God, in [31:38] love and favor to inherit your holy [31:40] Shabbat. And may Israel who re who rever [31:44] your re [31:47] and may Israel who rever you rest [31:49] thereon. Make our hearts pure to serve [31:52] you in truth. For you, oh God, are truth [31:55] and your word is truth and endures [31:57] forever. Deserving and praise are you, [31:59] oh Lord, King over all the earth, who [32:02] sanctifies the Sabbath day, Israel, and [32:06] the day of remembrance. Oh Lord our God, [32:09] be gracious to your people Israel and [32:12] accept their prayers. Restore our [32:14] worship to your sanctuary and receive [32:17] lovingly and favorably the offerings and [32:20] prayers of Israel. Nullify the [37:11] designs of those who devise evil against [37:13] me. Speily frustrate their intentions [37:17] and thwart their plans for your own [37:20] sake, for your own power, for your [37:24] holiness, and for your Torah. that those [37:28] who love may be deliver those you love [37:30] may be delivered. Answer me, O Lord, and [37:33] save me with your redeeming power. [37:40] >> May the words of my mouth and the [37:42] meditation of my heart be acceptable to [37:44] you, Lord, my rock and my redeemer. May [37:48] you keep harmony in the heavenly realms. [37:51] May you make peace for us, for Israel, [37:54] and for all your children everywhere. [37:57] Amen. May it be your will to rebuild [38:00] speedily in our rebel speedily in our [38:04] days. There we will serve you with awe [38:06] as in the days of old. May the worship [38:09] of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant to [38:12] you as in the days of old. We offer all [38:15] our praise in the name of Yeshua [38:17] Hamashia. [38:24] >> And we end the Amida with the last [38:27] section on page 17, the kadesh section [38:33] and your Shabbat Sador. [38:39] Magnified and sanctified be his great [38:42] name in the world which he has created [38:44] according to his will. May he establish [38:47] his kingdom during your life and during [38:49] your days and during the life of the [38:51] whole house of Israel even swiftly and [38:54] soon and say [38:55] >> amen. Let his great name be blessed [38:58] forever into all eternity. [39:00] >> Blessed, praised and glorified. Exalted, [39:03] extolled and honored, magnified and [39:05] lauded be the name of the Holy One. [39:07] >> Blessed be he. Though he be high above [39:10] all the blessings and songs, praises and [39:13] consolations which are uttered in the [39:15] world, and say, [39:16] >> "Amen." He makes peace in his high [39:19] places upon us and upon all Israel and [39:23] say, "Amen." [39:24] >> Amen. You may be seated. So, um, welcome [39:28] to everybody. I think we still have a [39:30] couple of, uh, people coming a little [39:32] bit late. Um it's always wonderful to be [39:35] together for the holidays and what a [39:38] special pleasure of being able to do a [39:40] rashana morning service together on [39:42] Shabbat. So um a reminder uh the apples [39:47] and the baskets on the children's table [39:49] are an extra snack for the children. But [39:51] if you are not a child and find yourself [39:54] needing to eat something, please grab an [39:57] apple and even a snack out of the [39:59] closet. You can ask one of the parents [40:01] where those are. So announcements for [40:04] today. Um we are having a holiday onig [40:08] in this room after the service. So we're [40:11] going to do a very quick turnaround so [40:13] that you aren't totally starving and [40:15] it's not dinner time by the time we eat [40:17] lunch. Um so uh we appreciate all of you [40:20] who move tables and move everything. [40:23] We're going to ask if possible parents, [40:26] we would like the children not to help [40:29] with bringing things in here today [40:32] because we really want to be able to [40:34] move quickly. So, if the parents could [40:36] um help us by taking your kids outside [40:39] for running around um blowing off some [40:42] steam, that would be good. Okay. Um the [40:46] September events and the holy days, the [40:48] rest of the holy days are on the [40:50] calendar. This Monday we will have [40:53] online prayer at 9:15 in the morning. Um [40:57] I may look semicoma toast by that time [41:00] after tomorrow's services and events, [41:02] but we're going to make an effort. Also, [41:05] Monday noon is the deadline for ordering [41:08] Lulab and NROG sets because we have to [41:11] get those orders in before Yom Kipur to [41:14] make sure they arrive in time for [41:16] Sukkot. [41:17] Next Shabbat, we are doing tashl [41:21] immediately after the service and there [41:23] will not be an owning. So you'll just [41:25] gather all of your belongings. We'll [41:27] head down to our normal spot at the uh [41:30] river on the the bridge and do tashlick [41:33] and then you'll just leave from there. [41:34] Those who are doing cleanup, who are [41:36] part of the regular um team will come [41:39] back here. I think that's it for the [41:42] regular announcements. We don't have any [41:45] birthdays. And when are we um [41:50] celebrating Yong Kipur? Do you know? [41:54] >> Monday the 21st. [41:55] >> Monday the 21st. [41:58] Okay. So that's here at 11:00 and we [42:00] will be here all day until we break the [42:03] fast in the evening on Monday the 21st. [42:06] So if you forgot to take that off from [42:08] work, now's a good time to remind your [42:10] employer. And then two weeks from today, [42:13] we are going to be celebrating Sukkot [42:16] during the day instead of our normal [42:18] Arab Sukot service. So we'll be [42:20] assembling our Lulu androg and waving [42:22] them and we'll have the service in here, [42:25] but we will eat outside in and around [42:27] the Suka area. um temperature providing [42:32] the opportunity and the Thursday before [42:35] that which is two weeks from this coming [42:38] two weeks from this past Thursday we're [42:40] going to be setting up the building and [42:41] setting up and decorating the suka. Um [42:44] so hopefully you'll all be here for [42:46] that. Okay, today is an extra long [42:49] service. [42:50] So if you find a need to get up and walk [42:53] around, go get some fresh air and come [42:55] back in. We understand um it would be [42:58] very nice to make sure that you're here [43:01] to hear the sound of the chauffear. [43:03] Right? This is what it's all about. If [43:05] you miss part of the Torah service, if [43:07] you miss part of the message or the [43:09] worship time, but we're commanded to [43:12] hear the sound of the chauffear. And [43:14] because we are a messianic synagogue [43:16] instead of a traditional rabbitic [43:18] synagogue, we actually blow the [43:20] chauffear on Shabbat because that [43:23] commandment to do it on the day we [43:24] believe um holds. So please also [43:28] continue to give to Israel in person or [43:31] through the links we have on our web [43:32] page and the Facebook page. And now the [43:35] Misha Barak, we're praying for all the [43:38] war wounded, for Rona who's recovering [43:40] very well from her surgery, for my [43:43] husband whose back issue is getting [43:45] better. for Sylvie, um, for me, for Amy [43:49] who's getting better by the moment, for [43:52] Arena, for Jackie who's doing amazing in [43:55] Israel after her back surgery, for Noah, [43:59] Cheryl, Betty, Brett, Phil, Craig's [44:02] grandmother, Jenny, Joanne's cousin [44:05] Susan, Bill's brother, Robert and [44:07] Frederick, Bill's sisters, Janet, Ron, [44:11] Dean's mother, and his father who's [44:13] about to have knee replacement tomorrow. How's the copy coming? [49:52] >> Perhaps the world's slowest copier [49:54] machine. It's saying it's Shabbat. I [49:56] should not be able to do this. [50:03] >> Thank you. [50:17] That's yours. [50:35] Noah and Jerusa. Would you like to come [50:39] open the ark for us? [50:42] >> They would of course. [50:53] And we rise when uh the ark is open. [51:14] We're on page 18. Sorry, here I did tell [51:17] you. [51:25] Miss [51:53] King [52:06] Sh to [52:20] say to [52:22] me [52:32] to [52:34] shorch. [52:57] to [52:59] shorel [53:21] the honors, please. Did you just put [53:23] your leg up? Is that okay? [53:55] And you may be seated. [53:59] >> Thank you. [54:01] I forgot it. [54:21] Now we need our Gabby. [54:54] Sorry, we had it and then when we rolled [54:56] it closed, we lost it. [55:02] >> Yeah. Great. Thank you very [55:49] And we are going to be um reading from [55:52] beerish Genesis 21 verses 134 and then [55:57] we have a second reading after this and [55:59] we're just going to chant line by line [56:01] the First seven verses. [56:29] Then Adonai visited Sarah just as he had [56:33] said. And Adonai did for Sarah just as [56:36] he had spoken. [56:51] Elohim. [56:53] So Sarah became pregnant and gave birth [56:56] to a son for Abraham in his old age at [56:59] the appointed time that God had told [57:02] him. [57:21] Abraham named his son who was born to [57:23] him, whom Sarah bore for him, Isaac. [57:43] Elohim. [57:45] >> Then Abraham circumcised Isaac, his [57:48] 8-day old son, just as God had commanded [57:51] him. [58:02] Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac his [58:05] son was born to him. [58:13] Elohim. [58:21] >> So Sarah said, "God has made laughter [58:23] for me. Everyone who hears will laugh [58:26] with me. [58:32] Abraham. [58:43] She also said, "Who would have said to [58:46] Abraham, Sarah has nursed children? For [58:50] I have given birth to a son in his old [58:52] age." [58:54] The child grew and was weaned. Abraham [58:57] made a big feast on the day Isaac was [59:00] weaned. But Sarah saw the son of Hagar, [59:03] the Egyptian, whom she had borne to [59:05] Abraham, making fun. So she said to [59:08] Abraham, "Drive out this female slave [59:11] and her son, for the son of this female [59:14] slave will not be an heir with my son, [59:17] with Isaac." Now the matter was very [59:19] displeasing in Abraham's eyes on account [59:22] of his son. But God said to Abraham, "Do [59:26] not be displeased about the boy and your [59:29] slave woman. Whatever Sarah says to you, [59:32] listen to her voice. For through Isaac [59:35] shall your seed be called. Yet I will [59:38] also make the son of the slave woman [59:40] into a nation because he is your seed." [59:43] So Abraham got up early in the morning [59:46] and took bread and a skin of water and [59:49] gave it and gave them to Haggar, putting [59:52] them on her shoulder and the child, and [59:55] sent her away. [59:57] She went and wandered about in the [59:59] wilderness of Beersa. [60:01] When the water from the skin was [60:03] finished, she abandoned the child under [60:05] one of the bushes. Then she went and sat [60:08] herself down opposite about a bow shot [60:11] away, for she said, "I can't bear to see [60:14] the child dying." So she sat down [60:18] opposite and lifted up her voice and [60:19] wept. Then God heard the boy's voice, [60:24] and the angel of God called to Hagar [60:27] from heaven. And he said to her, "What [60:30] troubles you, Hagar? [60:33] Do not be afraid, because God has heard [60:35] the boy's voice where he is. Get up, [60:38] lift the boy up, and hold on to him with [60:41] your hand, for I will make him a great [60:43] nation." Then God opened her eyes and [60:47] she saw a well of water and she went and [60:50] filled the water skin and gave the boy a [60:52] drink. God was with the boy and he grew. [60:55] He dwelt in the wilderness and became an [60:58] archer. He dwelt in the wilderness of [61:00] Piran and his mother took a wife for him [61:03] from the land of Egypt. Now it came [61:06] about at that same time that Aimilec [61:09] with Pel, [61:10] the commander of his army, said to [61:13] Abraham, "God is with you in all that [61:16] you do. So now make a pledge to me here [61:20] by God that you will not violate your [61:22] word with me or with my descendants or [61:25] with my offspring. As I have shown [61:27] loyalty to you, show the same to me and [61:30] to the land in which you have lived as [61:33] an outsider. [61:35] Abraham said, "I make a pledge." Now [61:38] Abraham had rebuked Aimilec because of [61:41] the well of water that Aimilec's [61:43] servants had seized. So Aimilec said [61:46] said, "I don't know who did this thing, [61:49] nor did you tell me, nor did I hear [61:52] about it until today." Then Abraham took [61:55] a flock of sheep [61:57] and cattle and gave them to Aimilec, and [62:00] the two of them made a covenant. Abraham [62:03] set seven young eu lambs apart from the [62:06] flock of sheep by themselves. Aimilec [62:09] said to Abraham, "What do these seven [62:12] you lambs that you have set by [62:13] themselves mean?" He said, "You are to [62:17] accept the seven you lambs from my hand [62:20] so that they may be a witness for me [62:23] that I dug this well." [62:25] That is why that place is called is [62:28] Beersa because there both of them made a [62:32] pledge and they made a covenant in [62:34] Beersa. Then Aimilec got up with the [62:39] commander of his army and they returned [62:42] to the land of the Philistines. Then he [62:44] planted a tamarisk tree in Beersa and [62:48] called there on the name of Adonai the [62:50] everlasting god. He lived as an outsider [62:53] in the land of the Philistines for many [62:56] days. [62:58] >> And we continue with the second reading [63:00] from Numbers 29:es 1-6. [63:04] >> On the first day of the seventh month, [63:06] you are to have a sacred assembly. You [63:09] are to do no laborious work. It is for [63:12] you for you a day of sounding the [63:14] chauffeur. You are to prepare a burnt [63:17] offering as a pleasing aroma to Adonai. [63:21] One young bull from the herd, one ram, [63:24] and seven male lambs a year old without [63:27] flaw with their grain offering of fine [63:30] flour mixed with oil. 3/10enth of an [63:33] epha with the bull, two tenths with the [63:36] ram and one/tenth with each of the seven [63:39] lambs, as well as one male goat as a sin [63:43] offering to make atonement for [63:44] yourselves. Also offer the burnt [63:47] offering for the month with its grain [63:50] offering, the regular burnt offering [63:52] with its grain offering, and their [63:54] appropriate drink offerings as a [63:56] pleasing aroma to Adonai as an offering [64:00] by fire. [64:03] >> And we return to the Sedor on page 21. [64:22] Adon [64:39] gets a little hard to lift when it's so [64:41] lopsided. And we stand [64:44] and uh we say [64:49] sorry. And this is the Torah that Moses [64:51] placed before the children of Israel at [64:53] the command of the Lord through Moses's [64:55] hand. [65:07] And you may be seated. And uh sometimes [65:11] I feel like this scroll is actually the [65:13] one that Moses got because there's no [65:16] tune for it. It's a pre-holocaust scroll [65:20] and so they had not yet developed the [65:22] tune which uh makes it very hard [65:25] sometimes to find the reading. So [65:28] special thank you to everyone who helped [65:30] out with that. and uh my daughter Sylvie [65:33] who's not here who um had excellent [65:36] eagle eyes for the Hebrew [65:48] To [65:55] mo [65:58] To [66:01] jo [66:14] to [66:31] And we continue um on page 22 with the [66:36] blessing before laura reading. [67:00] Adonai [67:15] said [67:17] amen. Amen. [67:43] The haptire reading today comes from the [67:46] book of 1 Samuel [67:48] beginning in the beginning chapter 1 [67:50] verse one and concluding with chapter 2 [67:53] verse 10. [67:59] Now there was a certain man of Ramathim [68:03] Zofim [68:05] of the hill country of Ephraim. His name [68:08] was Elcana, son of Gerro, son of Elu, [68:13] son of Tobu, son of Zuk, an Ephraimite. [68:20] He had two wives. The name of the one [68:22] was Hannah and the name of the other Pen [68:24] Panina. Panina. Panina. [68:28] >> Bonina. Thank you. Bonina had children, [68:32] but Hannah was childless. [68:36] Now, this man used to go up from his [68:39] town every year to worship and to [68:41] sacrifice to Adonai, Zealot, and Shiloh. [68:45] The two sons of Eli, [68:49] Hoffni, and Phineas were Cohen of [68:52] Adonai. there. [68:54] Then on the designated day, Elana would [68:57] sacrifice and give portions to his wife [68:59] Panina and to all his sons and [69:02] daughters. But to Hannah, he would give [69:04] a double portion. Even though he loved [69:08] Hannah, for Adonai had closed her womb. [69:13] Her rival would taunt her bitterly to [69:15] provoke her. [69:17] But because Adonai had closed her womb, [69:21] so it was year after year whenever she [69:23] went up to the house of Adonai that she [69:25] would provoke her. So she wept and would [69:28] not eat. [69:31] Then her husband Elana would say to her, [69:34] "Hannah, why are you crying? Why won't [69:37] you eat? Why is your heart so sad? Am I [69:40] not better to you than 10 sons?" [69:44] After eating and drinking in Shiloh, [69:46] Hannah got up. [69:48] Now Ellie the Cohen was sitting on his [69:52] seat by the doorpost of the temple of [69:53] Adonai. While her soul was bitter, she [69:58] prayed to Adonai and wept. [70:01] So she made a vow and said, Adonote, [70:05] if you will indeed look upon the [70:07] affliction of your handmade, remember me [70:10] and not forget your handmmaid. But grant [70:13] your handmmaid a son. Then I will give [70:16] him to Adonai all the days of his life. [70:19] And no razor will ever touch his head. [70:24] It came to pass as she prayed long [70:26] before Adonai that Ellie was watching [70:30] her mouth. [70:32] Now Hannah was praying in her heart. [70:34] Only her lips were moving but her voice [70:36] could not be heard. So Ellie thought she [70:39] was drunk. [70:41] Then Ellie said to her, "How long will [70:43] you be drunk? Get rid of your wine." But [70:48] in response, Hannah said, "No, my lord. [70:51] I am a woman with an oppressed spirit. [70:55] I haven't been drinking wine or beer. In [70:57] instead, I have been pouring out my soul [70:59] before Adonai. Don't consider your [71:02] handmade a wicked woman, for out of my [71:04] great anguish and grief, I have been [71:06] praying until now." [71:08] Then Ellie responded, "Go in shalom, and [71:12] may the God of Israel grant your [71:13] petition that you asked of him." [71:17] "May your maid servant find favor in [71:19] your eyes," she said. So the woman went [71:22] her way. She ate, and her countenance [71:26] was no longer dejected. [71:29] They rose up early in the morning and [71:31] worshiped before Adonai. Then went back [71:34] to their home to Rama. Then Elana was [71:37] intimate with his wife Hannah and Han [71:41] and I remembered her. [71:43] So it came to pass at the turn of the [71:45] year that Hannah conceived and gave [71:46] birth to a son. [71:49] She called his name Samuel [71:52] because I have asked Adonai for him. [71:56] When the men Elena and all his household [71:58] went up to offer the annual sacrifice to [72:00] Adonai and to fulfill his vow offering, [72:04] Hannah did not go up. [72:07] For she said to her husband, "When the [72:09] child is weaned, I will bring him so [72:12] that he may appear before Adonai and [72:15] stay there forever." [72:18] So as Elena said to her, "Do what seems [72:21] best to you. Stay until you have weaned [72:24] him. only may Adonai establish his word. [72:28] So the woman stayed home and nursed her [72:30] son until she weaned him. When she had [72:33] weaned him, she took him up with her [72:35] along with three bulls, one of flour, [72:40] and a jar of wine, and brought him to [72:42] the house of Adonai and Shiloh, where [72:44] the child was still while the child was [72:47] still young. [72:49] After they slaughtered the bull, they [72:52] brought the boy to Eli. [72:55] It's me, my lord, she said. As your soul [72:58] lives, my lord, I am the woman that [73:01] stood by you here praying to Adoni. For [73:04] this boy, I prayed. And Adonai has [73:06] granted me my petition that I asked of [73:08] him. So I in turn dedicate him to [73:12] Adonai. As long as he lives, he is [73:16] dedicated to Adonai. [73:18] Then he bowed in worship there before [73:21] Adonai. [73:24] Then Hannah prayed and said, "My heart [73:27] exalts in Adonai. [73:29] My horn is lifted high in Adonai. I [73:32] smile wide over my enemies. For I [73:35] rejoice in your salvation. [73:38] There is none holy as Adonai. For there [73:41] is none besides you, nor is there any [73:44] rock like our God. Boast no more so [73:47] proudly. Innocence comes out of your [73:50] mouth. [73:52] For Adonai is the all- knowing God, and [73:56] by him deeds are weighed. [73:59] The bows of the mighty are broken, but [74:02] the stumbling are guarded with strength. [74:05] Those full hire themselves for bread, [74:09] but those starving hunger no more. [74:12] Even the bearing gives birth to seven, [74:14] but she with many sons languishes. [74:18] Adonai causes death and makes alive. He [74:21] brings down to sh and raises up. Adonai [74:25] makes poor and makes rich. He brings low [74:29] and also lifts up. He raises the [74:32] helpless from the dust. He lifts the [74:35] needy from the dung hill to make them [74:38] sit with nobles, granting them a seed of [74:42] honor. For the ill earth's pillars are [74:46] at anon eyes, and he has set the world [74:49] on them. He guards the steps of his [74:52] godly ones, but the wicked are silenced [74:55] in darkness. [74:57] For one does not prevail by might. [75:01] Those who oppose Adonai will be [75:03] shattered. [75:04] He thunders against them in heaven. He [75:07] judges the ends of the earth. He gives [75:10] strength to his king, exalting the horn [75:14] of his anointed one. [75:29] The blessing tuna readings is on page 23 [75:32] in the sedor. [75:58] Amen. [76:28] But immediately after the trouble of [76:30] those days, the sun will be darkened and [76:33] the moon will not give its light and the [76:36] stars will fall from heaven and the [76:39] powers of heaven will be shaken. Then [76:42] the sign of the son of man will appear [76:44] in heaven. And then all the tribes of [76:47] the land will mourn. They will see the [76:50] son of man coming on the clouds of [76:52] heaven with power and great glory. He [76:55] will send out his angel with a great [76:58] chauffar and they will gather together [77:01] his chosen from the four winds from one [77:04] ends of heaven to the other. [77:08] Now learn the parable of the fig tree. [77:11] When his branch branch come becomes [77:14] standard and puts forth leaf, you know, [77:17] you know that summer is near. So also [77:20] when you see all these things, know that [77:23] it is near at the door. Amen. I tell [77:27] you, this generation will not pass away [77:30] until all these things happen. Heaven [77:33] and earth will pass away, but my word [77:36] will never pass away. But of that day, [77:40] an hour no one knows, not even the angel [77:42] of heaven, nor the Son, except the [77:45] Father alone. [77:59] The blessing after the final reading. [78:05] Eloh. [78:32] Amen. [78:47] Bob and John, [78:50] >> you do the honor. [78:53] >> Bob and John, [78:56] >> we rise while the ark is open. [79:21] And together we sing on page 24. [80:07] Hallelujah. [80:25] Don't sit down just yet because we're [80:26] going to bless the children. [80:32] I want the [81:03] Good job. [81:34] Hallelujah. [81:39] >> All right. [81:41] The blessing will extend to the little [81:43] one that's back there. [81:51] We thank you, Father, [81:54] who are the children. [81:57] Thank you for making us your children. [82:06] him [82:13] tongue tied today. [82:19] May God make you as Ephraim and [82:23] Elohim. [82:26] May God make you as Sarah, Rebecca, [82:28] Rachel, and Leia. In the name of [82:31] Messiah, Yeshua, we bless. Be Maru. [82:35] >> Amen. Okay. [83:10] and I are [83:13] asking. [83:35] Well, today is a day of celebration. [83:47] And while it's also a day that we [83:49] acknowledge that the books are open for [83:53] the days of ah, we remember that mercy [83:57] triumphs over judgment [83:59] and that we have a God who has made a [84:01] way of atonement for all of us. So we [84:04] can go into this new year in hope and [84:07] rejoicing. [84:10] So, put your dancing shoes on. [84:34] I will lift my hands to the Lord my God. [84:37] To him alone will I sing my praise. I [84:41] will sing. I will praise the Lord. [84:47] Oh, I will lift my hands to the Lord my [84:50] God. To him alone will I sing my [84:54] praises. I will sing. I will praise the [84:58] Lord. [85:02] Hallelu. [85:06] Halleluah. [85:09] Hallelu. [85:12] I will sing. I will praise the Lord. Oh [85:15] I will lift my hands to the Lord my God. [85:19] To him alone will I sing my praise. I [85:22] will sing. I will praise the Lord. [85:29] I will lift my hands to the Lord my God. [85:33] To him alone will I sing my praises. I [85:36] will sing. I will praise the Lord. [85:43] Hallelu. [85:47] Hallelujah. [85:50] Hallelu. [85:53] I will sing. I will praise the Lord. [85:57] Hallelu. [86:01] Halleluah. [86:04] Hallelu. [86:07] I will sing. I will praise the Lord. Oh, [86:10] I will lift my hands to the Lord my God. [86:14] to him alone will I sing my praise and I [86:18] will sing. I will praise the Lord. [86:24] Yes, I will lift my hands to the Lord my [86:27] God. To him alone will I sing my praise. [86:31] I will sing. I will praise the Lord. [86:39] Halleluah. [86:42] Halleluah. [86:46] Halleluah. [86:49] I will sing. I will praise the Lord. Oh, [86:52] I will lift my hands to the Lord my God. [86:56] To him alone will I sing my praise. I [86:59] will sing. I will praise the Lord. [87:05] Oh, I will lift my hands to the Lord my [87:08] God. To him alone will I sing my praise. [87:12] I will sing. I will praise the Lord. [87:20] Hallelu. [87:23] Hallelujah. [87:27] Halleluah. [87:30] I will sing. I will praise the Lord. [87:32] Hallelujah. Hallelu. [87:37] Halleluah. [87:41] Halleluah. [87:43] I will sing. [88:02] Blow a trumpet inside. [88:05] Shout it on the mountains. [88:08] Blow a trumpet in Zion. For the day of [88:12] the Lord has come. [88:15] Blow a trumpet in Zion. [88:18] Sound it on the mountain. [88:22] Blow a trumpet in Zion. For the day of [88:25] the Lord has come. [88:28] Halle Hallelu. [88:31] Lord God Almighty. [88:34] Halleluah. [88:37] Yeshua [88:39] is [88:46] blow a trumpet in Zion. [88:49] Sound it on the mountain. [88:52] Blow a trumpet in Zion. For the day of [88:56] the Lord has come. [88:59] Blow a trumpet in Zion. [89:02] sounded on the mountain. [89:05] Blow a trumpet in Zion. For the day of [89:09] the Lord has come. [89:12] Halle Halleluah. [89:15] Lord God Almighty. [89:18] Halle Halleluah. [89:21] Yeshua [89:22] is king. [89:30] Blow a trumpet in Zion, [89:32] sound it on the mountains. [89:36] Blow a trumpet in Zion, for the day of [89:39] the Lord has come. [89:42] Halle Halleluah, [89:45] Lord God Almighty. [89:49] Halle Halleluah, [89:51] Yeshua is king. [89:56] Hey, [90:14] the King is coming. Lift up your hands. [90:17] The King is coming. Cry, hosana. [90:21] The King is coming. Lift up your voice [90:23] and rejoice. [90:27] He has taken the enemy's breath. He has [90:31] the keys of hell and of death. Lift up [90:34] your heads, all ye gates. Enter the [90:37] king. [90:40] Who is this king that we should lift our [90:44] hands [90:47] or use our voice to shout his glory? [90:54] He is the mighty one who gives us [90:57] victory. [90:59] He is the eternal king of glory. [91:06] Yeshua, [91:08] you are our victory. [91:12] Yeshua, [91:14] you are our king. [91:19] Yeshua, [91:21] you are the victory. [91:25] Yeshua, [91:27] you are King. [91:32] The King is coming. Lift up your hands. [91:35] The King is coming. Cry, hosana, [91:39] the King is coming. Lift up your voice [91:41] and rejoice. [91:45] He has taken the enemy's breath. He has [91:49] the keys of hell and of death. Lift up [91:52] your heads or ye gates. Enter the king. [91:58] Who is this king that we should lift our [92:02] hands? [92:05] Or use a voice to shout his glory. [92:11] He is the mighty one who gives us [92:15] victory. [92:17] He is the eternal king of glory. [92:23] Yeshua, [92:25] you are our victory. [92:30] Yeshua, [92:32] you are the king. [92:37] Yeshua, [92:38] you are our victory. [92:43] Yeshua, [92:45] you are a king. [92:50] The King is coming. Lift up your hands. [92:53] The King is coming. Cry Hosana. [92:56] The King is coming. Lift up your voice [92:59] and rejoice. [93:03] He has taken the enemy's breath. He has [93:06] the keys of hell and of death. Lift up [93:10] your heads or ye gates. Enter the king. [93:16] Who is this king that we should lift [93:23] or use our voice to shout his glory? [93:29] He is the mighty one who gives us [93:33] victory. [93:35] He is the eternal king of glory. [93:42] Yes, you are. You are our victory. [93:48] Yeshua, [93:50] you are our king. [93:55] Yeshua. [93:57] You are our victory. [94:02] Yeshua. [94:04] You are our king. [94:08] Yeshua. [94:10] You are our victory. [94:15] Yeshua. [94:17] You are our king. [94:21] Yeshua. [94:23] You are our victory. [94:28] Yeshua. [94:30] You are our king. [94:46] Hello [94:47] adorn. [94:51] worship. [94:54] Adon [95:20] Elohu. Tonight [95:47] flesh. [95:52] We will praise you, Lord. We will exalt [95:56] the name above all nations. We will [96:00] praise you, Lord, and proclaim your [96:03] kingdom. [96:08] We will praise you, Lord. We will exalt [96:12] the name above all names. We will praise [96:16] you Lord and proclaim your kingdom. [96:23] Blessed are you Lord our God. [96:28] King of the universe. [96:30] Blessed are you Lord our God. [96:35] King of the universe. [96:37] Blessed are you Lord our God. [96:42] King of the universe. [96:44] Blessed are you, oh Lord your God, [96:48] King of the universe. [97:09] Then [97:18] there [97:34] we Hold on. [97:38] Tonight [98:01] Elohim. [98:15] We celebrate you, Lord. We will proclaim [98:19] your name above all names. [98:30] adore [98:33] their [98:41] adon. [98:59] Elohu. [99:29] I don't know. [99:32] Eloh. [99:43] Hallelujah.
[100:40] Oh man.
[100:52] >> Well, um
[100:56] I forgot I forgot to put my kettle on
[100:58] this morning, but I'll promise you one
[101:00] thing.
[101:03] I won't forget the word for my funeral
[101:07] >> because I'll be in charge of remembering
[101:09] that.
[101:13] >> And um
[101:17] we uh we watched a
[101:20] service last night from uh see that was
[101:24] uh
[101:25] >> what Park Avenue Synagogue.
[101:29] And um one of the profound things that I
[101:33] heard the rabbi say, I think it was
[101:38] during his message
[101:40] was that a gentile went with a certain
[101:43] Jewish person to services and
[101:46] and uh and afterwards he asked him about
[101:50] a number of things. Um
[101:53] what what does it mean when they do
[101:55] that? And he explained it. And what does
[101:56] it mean when they do that? and he
[101:58] explained it and you know some other
[102:01] questions he explained them all and then
[102:02] and then he said and then I noticed the
[102:05] rabbi took his watch off and set it on
[102:07] the edge of the of the podium or the
[102:10] beimma when he um
[102:13] you know before he spoke what does that
[102:15] mean and the answer was oh that means
[102:18] absolutely nothing.
[102:21] So, um uh but hopefully today
[102:25] uh that will mean something.
[102:28] Um and the size of the books I brought
[102:31] up here shouldn't scare you. Um
[102:36] this book here, which is very thin as
[102:39] you can see, was written by Jacob Ner,
[102:42] who I was blessed to call my friend and
[102:46] and a teacher as well. It's called the
[102:48] theology of the oral Torah.
[102:51] Now um he translated the entire tomud.
[102:56] He did his own translation of the entire
[102:58] tomid.
[103:00] And this book is about the theology
[103:03] of uh
[103:05] well the oral Torah, the tomid, the you
[103:08] know the things that comprise that.
[103:11] Um
[103:13] and uh
[103:16] uh a friend of mine, a scholar Carl
[103:19] Kinbar
[103:21] called it a seinal work. Um another
[103:26] friend of mine whose grandfather was a
[103:30] um rabbi
[103:33] told him that um he didn't think news or
[103:36] any ever produce anything of any great
[103:40] significance.
[103:43] you know, people get judged differently
[103:44] by different people. Um, but I I am
[103:48] going to read you a little bit
[103:51] um that came out of that book.
[103:55] Um,
[103:57] I was reading some parts that have to do
[104:00] with
[104:01] tshoua
[104:03] or uh repentance or return.
[104:08] And um
[104:12] and I don't let me see here. Um
[104:17] so this uh
[104:21] this is the well this is the one part I
[104:24] really want you to remember. This is
[104:27] from the perspective of the rabbis. But
[104:30] um
[104:31] uh
[104:33] I think that um
[104:38] it it's well it's it's a good it's a
[104:41] good perspective here.
[104:45] Um, and it's Ner's comment, but he says,
[104:49] "Thisha then involves not the
[104:53] humiliation,
[104:55] but
[104:57] >> what?" What What do you think? Not
[104:59] humiliation, but what? What do you
[105:01] think?
[105:04] Tossa
[105:05] then involves not the humiliate, not
[105:08] humiliation, but the reaffirmation of
[105:11] the self in the image of God.
[105:15] that that's how I'd like to invite you
[105:18] to think about repentance.
[105:21] Um, you know, repentance and judgment
[105:24] don't seem uh real um popular in many
[105:28] places
[105:30] these days. Um, judgment certainly
[105:33] doesn't.
[105:35] um
[105:37] both in uh well both in
[105:41] churches and many synagogues
[105:44] uh the notion of judgment and even
[105:47] repentance is kind of a a non-starter. I
[105:51] I I know people who have objected to the
[105:55] content of some of the traditional
[105:57] prayers and particularly with respect to
[106:00] Yam Kapoor
[106:01] saying that well um problem is uh this
[106:07] all implies that I've done something
[106:09] wrong
[106:11] and and that was stated by a friend of
[106:14] mine at a Torah study at a synagogue.
[106:17] Um and she's she was older than me.
[106:21] And I I just I didn't judge her.
[106:25] I did I did, I think, judge in some way
[106:28] what she said, but I just thought, "Wow,
[106:32] how could somebody
[106:35] be um
[106:38] well of any real age
[106:41] actually think that they've never done
[106:44] anything wrong."
[106:46] Um
[106:49] anyway, um the thing is we don't
[106:53] we don't I guess I don't know do maybe
[106:56] we don't like to think we've done
[106:58] anything wrong.
[107:00] Um I mean I would rather do nothing
[107:02] wrong and then never have to deal with
[107:04] anything wrong, right? But but just you
[107:08] know wishing that everything had been
[107:10] perfect isn't the same as being perfect,
[107:12] is it? Anyway, I'm just going to read
[107:14] part of this um
[107:17] um
[107:21] from from this book and then we'll just
[107:24] go from there. Through an act of
[107:26] repentance, a person who has sinned
[107:28] leaves the status of sinner but must
[107:31] also atone for the sin and gain
[107:34] forgiveness so that such a person is no
[107:38] longer deemed a sinner.
[107:41] Now I I don't want you to take that as
[107:43] though um ultimate atonement is
[107:47] performed by the individual. It's it's
[107:51] at a lesser level. Self-evidently within
[107:55] a system built on the dialectics of
[107:58] competing wills, God's and man's
[108:01] repentance comes first in the path to
[108:04] reconciliation.
[108:05] That is because the act of will
[108:09] involves a statement of regret or
[108:11] remorse. Resolve never to repeat the
[108:14] act. And finally, the test of this
[108:17] change of heart or will where feasible.
[108:20] Specifically, it is a trial of entering
[108:23] a situation in which the original sin is
[108:26] possible
[108:27] but is not repeated.
[108:30] Then the statement of remorse and
[108:32] voluntary change of will is confirmed by
[108:34] an act of omission or commission as the
[108:38] case requires
[108:40] followed by atonement. Therefore,
[108:42] repentance commences the work of closing
[108:46] off the effects of sin.
[108:49] History, time, change, inequity. It
[108:53] marks the beginning of the labor of
[108:55] restoring creation to Eden. the perfect
[108:59] world as God wants it and creates it.
[109:04] Since the Hebrew word tshoua is built
[109:07] out of the root for return, the concept
[109:10] is generally understood to mean
[109:12] returning to God from a situation of
[109:15] estrangement.
[109:17] >> The turning is not only from sin but
[109:20] towards God.
[109:21] >> Amen. For sin serves as an indicator of
[109:24] a deeper pathology, utter estrangement
[109:29] from God. Man's will alienated from
[109:33] God's.
[109:34] Dhoua then involves not humiliation
[109:38] but reaffirmation of the self in God's
[109:41] image after God's likeness. Now, I think
[109:45] I said that's the part I really want you
[109:47] to remember.
[109:49] Um
[109:53] repentance
[109:54] turning returning
[109:57] to God is is about and results in
[110:04] reaffirmation
[110:06] of your own self
[110:08] >> in the image of God after God's likeness
[110:12] and and the same with others. And I'm
[110:16] I'm inviting you today to think of
[110:19] yourself in this way. Also inviting you
[110:22] to think of every other human being in
[110:24] this way.
[110:26] >> That that our desire for ourselves
[110:30] certainly should be to not be estranged
[110:32] from God to be re-affirmed in his image
[110:36] that we're made in, but also to see all
[110:39] other human beings in like fashion. Does
[110:43] anyone agree?
[110:44] >> Yeah. If you don't agree, state it
[110:46] viferously. Shout me down.
[110:50] I I invite you to shout me down. Okay.
[110:54] So,
[110:55] >> can you say
[110:55] >> um what
[110:56] >> you say it again?
[110:58] >> Shout me down.
[110:59] >> No, no, no.
[111:01] >> Say what again?
[111:02] >> What it was that you wanted to express?
[111:05] >> Oh, not tshoua. Tshoua then involves not
[111:09] humiliation
[111:11] but reaffirmation of the self in God's
[111:14] image after God's likeness.
[111:18] >> Wholeheartedly agree. Thank you.
[111:21] >> Excuse me.
[111:22] >> Wholeheartedly agree. Thank you.
[111:24] >> It's so nice now and then to have
[111:26] agreement,
[111:28] >> especially when you're right.
[111:30] >> I I I will suggest to you that you
[111:34] should not desire agreement when you're
[111:36] wrong. Yes.
[111:38] >> And that's a tough one.
[111:39] >> Yeah.
[111:39] >> That is a tough one because and that
[111:41] fits right in because when we're wrong,
[111:44] we tend to think we're right.
[111:46] >> When we're wrong, we tend to justify
[111:48] ourselves and we tend to find reasons
[111:51] often in other people for why we are
[111:54] right and not wrong.
[111:55] >> But you know what? God really doesn't
[111:57] care what I think of somebody else when
[112:00] he thinks I'm wrong. He doesn't care.
[112:03] You know, you know what? You know what?
[112:04] He'll make it clear in one way or
[112:06] another.
[112:08] Yeah, you know, Schlommo over there may
[112:10] have done this or may have done that or
[112:12] maybe not. Maybe not. Maybe you're
[112:13] wrong. But I don't care cuz I'm talking
[112:16] to you now. I I just don't care. You
[112:20] shouldn't care either because it's just
[112:22] not what it's about. It's not about
[112:23] Shalomo.
[112:25] It's not about
[112:28] Panina.
[112:30] It's not about Eli or Elena. It's about
[112:33] you.
[112:35] >> So, um I'll just read the rest of this.
[112:39] It follows that repentance forms a
[112:41] theological category encompassing
[112:44] moral issues of action and oh attitude.
[112:48] Oh, not attitude too.
[112:53] It follows that repentance forms a
[112:55] theological category encompassing moral
[112:57] issues of action and attitude. Wrong
[113:01] action. wrong action, arrogant attitude
[113:05] in particular. No, there's is again
[113:09] it's not just
[113:12] it's not just
[113:15] what we did,
[113:17] but it's our attitude.
[113:20] I I'm going to invite you to try to
[113:22] separate your actions from your
[113:24] attitude. Just try it one try it
[113:27] sometime. Try try to really take your
[113:30] actions, put them over here, and prove
[113:32] to yourself that they had nothing to do
[113:35] with your attitude.
[113:37] If you if you can pull that off, please
[113:41] write it write it down and send it to me
[113:44] or come and tell me because I would love
[113:46] to I would really love to hear. Um,
[113:50] so let's see.
[113:53] Repentance forms a step in the path to
[113:56] God that starts with the estrangement
[113:59] represented by sin. Doing what I want.
[114:03] Oh, is that a good definition of sin?
[114:06] >> Doing what I want
[114:09] instead of what God wants. Thus,
[114:11] rebellion and arrogance. Sin
[114:14] precipitates punishment whether personal
[114:17] for individuals or historical for
[114:19] nations. Now, most of us don't like the
[114:22] notion of punishment, do we? No.
[114:27] >> I mean, you know, there's a lot of good
[114:29] stuff in the Bible, but the punishment,
[114:31] the part that has to do with punishment,
[114:33] I mean, couldn't we just erase those
[114:34] parts?
[114:36] Couldn't Couldn't we erase the,
[114:39] you know, exile
[114:41] for the Israelites? Couldn't we just
[114:44] erase that? Couldn't Couldn't we?
[114:46] Apparently not, because it's happened
[114:48] more than once. And I think I mentioned
[114:51] last week that I I think as individuals
[114:54] we can we can go into what's microexile.
[114:58] We can become sort of exiled in certain
[115:01] ways. We don't necessarily have to be
[115:03] totally estranged or absolutely
[115:05] separated from God. But but parts of our
[115:07] thinking, parts of our mind and attitude
[115:11] can can sort of go into exile. live in a
[115:14] place that isn't the place where God's
[115:16] inviting us to be with our mind and our
[115:19] heart. So, it's it's not just it's not
[115:23] just necessarily everything in a
[115:26] person's life. It could be some things.
[115:31] And by a person's life, I mean my life,
[115:33] your life, and everybody else's life,
[115:35] everybody on the face of the earth. So,
[115:38] let's see. Um,
[115:41] and then it says,
[115:44] let's see, sin precipitates punishment,
[115:46] whether personal for individuals or
[115:48] historical for nations. Punishment
[115:51] brings about repentance for sin. Do you
[115:54] think that's true?
[115:56] >> I mean, punishment might just be, you
[115:59] think punishment could just be the
[116:00] results of your actions?
[116:03] Like if you're if you drive uh 85 in a
[116:07] 45 mph zone and you get pulled over and
[116:11] you get a nasty ticket. Um I don't
[116:14] that'd be a pretty bad ticket I think
[116:17] for going 40 over in a
[116:20] >> in a 45. Um but but that that could be a
[116:25] good thing depending on how you look at
[116:27] it. Don't you suppose,
[116:28] >> especially if it resulted in you not
[116:30] doing that again, which prevented you
[116:32] from killing somebody later? That's
[116:34] >> right.
[116:36] >> I I I knew a young man that got pulled
[116:39] over. I I don't know if he was going
[116:41] quite that fast. It was a little bit
[116:43] higher speed zone, but he was really
[116:45] moving. and he got pulled over
[116:48] and the policeman, I think it was a
[116:50] highway patrol, comes up to the car and
[116:54] and he actually has the audacity to say,
[116:56] "Hey, C, can you just like follow me
[116:58] over to this gas station? I really have
[117:00] to go to the bathroom. I'm going to like
[117:02] mess my pants."
[117:04] And and
[117:06] his the response was not, "Oh, sure." It
[117:09] was like
[117:11] it wasn't very positive.
[117:15] Anyway, um
[117:18] but it got him in a lot of trouble. He
[117:21] ended up in court
[117:23] and um he did end up with not too bad of
[117:27] a decision, but
[117:30] uh in that case, I think it was largely
[117:32] pulled off by a really slick lawyer.
[117:35] um which may not have been the best
[117:37] result for him. But uh anyway,
[117:42] so the the sin the punishment could just
[117:45] be that you know I mean my punishment
[117:48] for instance for leaving a garden rake
[117:50] laying with the tines up on the ground
[117:52] and then lying on the ground.
[117:56] Um there's a there may be a punishment
[117:59] for poor grammar too. Uh depends on
[118:02] who's around. And anyway, you walk
[118:04] along, you step on that thing, and it
[118:06] can flip up really hard and smack you
[118:08] right in the face. Now, I could I could
[118:11] think of that as punishment for doing a
[118:15] wrong thing. The result being I'm not
[118:18] going to leave it like that again so
[118:21] that that doesn't happen to me or
[118:23] somebody else. That that's a good result
[118:26] in the end, right? and then I don't
[118:29] injure myself or somebody else by
[118:31] leaving it there. Um anyway, the
[118:36] sequence of stages in the moral
[118:38] generation of sinful sinful humanity
[118:42] individual or collective defines the
[118:45] context in which repentance finds its
[118:47] natural home. True, the penitant
[118:50] corrects damage
[118:53] uh corrects damage one is actually
[118:55] carried out to his fellow man. But apart
[118:58] from reparations, the act of repentance
[119:00] involves only the attitude, specifically
[119:03] substituting feelings of regret and
[119:06] remorse for arrogant intention that led
[119:09] to the commission of the sin.
[119:12] If the person declares regret and
[119:14] undertakes not to repeat the action, the
[119:17] process of repentance gets underway.
[119:20] When the occasion to repeat the sinful
[119:22] act arises and the penitant refrains
[119:25] from doing it again, the process comes
[119:28] to a conclusion.
[119:30] So it is through the will and attitude
[119:32] of the sinner that the act of repentance
[119:36] is realized. The entire process is
[119:38] carried on beyond the framework of
[119:41] religious actions, rights or rituals.
[119:46] The power of repentance
[119:49] overcomes sin of the most egregious
[119:53] kind.
[119:54] Um
[119:58] so
[120:02] repentance involves not humiliation
[120:06] but the reaffirmation
[120:08] of the self in the image of God.
[120:10] >> Amen.
[120:20] >> And
[120:24] It follows according to Nner and from
[120:28] the perspective of the rabbis
[120:32] that no sin overwhelms the
[120:34] transformative power of repentance.
[120:37] >> I've known people that told me from the
[120:40] time I was young until today.
[120:43] It It's too late for me. I've done too
[120:46] much wrong.
[120:49] I I made friends with drunks when I was
[120:51] a kid. I was about about this tall when
[120:54] I made friends with what could have
[120:56] actually been called the town drunk.
[121:00] Um I liked him. I I cared about him. And
[121:03] the same thing happened in another town
[121:05] that I lived in. I
[121:08] I don't know how many drunks were in
[121:09] that town, but I I became pretty good
[121:12] friends with one of them. And he told me
[121:14] that it was too late for him. And I told
[121:16] him that no, that wasn't true.
[121:18] But uh anyway, here's an interesting
[121:21] fact. I mean, sometimes people develop
[121:24] horrible attitudes about another people
[121:26] and sometimes there's a really good
[121:27] reason for those feelings and those
[121:29] attitudes. I mean, there's it's not
[121:31] without cause, but um and you you
[121:36] probably know the passage about the sins
[121:38] of the fathers being visited. I mean,
[121:41] this is at least tangentally related to
[121:43] that. Did you know that a distant cousin
[121:46] of Adolf Hitler converted to Judaism and
[121:50] at the time of the publishing of this
[121:53] book was serving in the IDF.
[121:57] >> That's pretty incredible, isn't it?
[121:58] >> Yeah.
[121:59] >> I I've I've heard some other stories
[122:01] somewhat similar to that. Um, in the in
[122:05] in one case, I can't remember who it
[122:07] was, but this this person's much nearer
[122:10] family had actually been involved in
[122:12] really horrible things
[122:14] and and they likewise acted in quite a
[122:17] similar way to this individual.
[122:20] Um, so anyway,
[122:23] what I'm inviting you to do
[122:26] is to
[122:29] um,
[122:31] you know, it says it says in Proverbs, I
[122:34] think it's 19:22, that what is desirable
[122:37] in a man, I'll say desirable in a
[122:39] person,
[122:41] is is their kindness.
[122:44] And um I really want to become a
[122:48] resoundingly kind person, kinder and
[122:51] kinder. I want this group of people here
[122:55] to become a very very kind group of
[122:58] people. I'm not saying that we aren't
[123:00] kind,
[123:02] but um you know, I think I could be
[123:06] kinder. I I think I could
[123:10] I would I would like to notice less of
[123:14] certain kind of reactions and thoughts
[123:16] in my own head
[123:18] >> because they don't lead me to a good
[123:20] place
[123:21] and and more of just cutting them down
[123:24] when they pop up
[123:26] >> like weeds.
[123:28] Kindness kindness uh I think would seem
[123:31] to include mercy and understanding of
[123:35] other people. And I want to invite you
[123:37] to be merciful and understanding to you,
[123:42] to yourself,
[123:44] because we're called to love our
[123:46] neighbor as ourself.
[123:48] And we've talked about this many times,
[123:51] but if you're not kind to yourself, if
[123:54] you if you don't love yourself, if
[123:56] you're condemning of yourself,
[123:58] then you're arguing with uh well,
[124:01] probably with God's ability to transform
[124:05] you. in the image of himself that you
[124:09] were made in. And then it also leads to
[124:12] the way we see other people.
[124:15] And um so I want to invite you to really
[124:20] be kind.
[124:23] First of all, make sure you're not
[124:26] judging yourself harshly.
[124:28] Just come to the compassionate
[124:32] father.
[124:34] Aba,
[124:36] the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
[124:38] And
[124:41] just be honest with him and
[124:44] and allow him to show you
[124:49] who you are, what he made you to be, and
[124:53] bring you closer. Um,
[124:57] I'm just going to read a a few verses
[124:59] and then I think I'm going to kind of
[125:02] try to cap this up
[125:05] in the um
[125:08] in the account of Luke and in the um
[125:12] well what people call the New Testament.
[125:15] I don't like to call I don't like to
[125:17] call it that. In fact, if I buy a Bible,
[125:21] I always cut that page out that they put
[125:24] in between Matthew and well in in
[125:30] Christian copies of things, you know,
[125:33] they put it after Malachi.
[125:36] I cut that out because to me that
[125:38] dividing page is a wall of partition
[125:42] that Yeshua came to tear down.
[125:45] >> And and it wasn't it's not a gentile
[125:49] book. It was for
[125:51] >> the Jews. Yeshua came for the lost sheep
[125:54] of the house of Israel.
[125:57] >> He came not to judge the world and not
[125:59] to judge you, but that the world that
[126:02] that you could be redeemed and
[126:05] transformed and um reaffirmed in God's
[126:09] image, which is the one you were made
[126:12] in. So it says this, he says this to
[126:15] people, do not judge and you will not be
[126:18] judged. You know, I really really like
[126:20] the fact or the thought that if I don't
[126:23] judge other people, I'm not going to get
[126:26] whacked. I like that. Well, maybe I
[126:30] don't always like the that I'm actually
[126:33] not supposed to judge. Maybe that part.
[126:35] Maybe I could do without that part. I
[126:36] just I just like the I won't be judged
[126:39] part.
[126:41] How about that?
[126:43] But really, it's pretty clear. Do not
[126:45] judge. Don't judge. Don't act like the
[126:48] judge. There's one lawgiver and one
[126:50] judge, and that is our heavenly father.
[126:54] Don't act that way. Don't be the one
[126:57] sitting on the throne.
[126:59] Don't pronounce judgment in your own
[127:02] mind. And certainly don't do it out loud
[127:04] and don't act like don't act like it. Do
[127:08] not condemn and you will not be
[127:09] condemned.
[127:11] I really like the thought of not being
[127:13] condemned.
[127:15] And and if I don't condemn, I won't be
[127:18] condemned. Well, wow. I can just not
[127:21] condemn. I don't want to be condemned.
[127:23] It's not that complicated.
[127:27] And um forgive and you'll be forgiven.
[127:32] Well, I mean, don't I want to be
[127:33] forgiven without forgiving? Don't I
[127:36] don't Wouldn't I like that? I mean I
[127:39] mean, aren't there some things I can
[127:41] just hang on to and blame people for and
[127:43] judge them for? Certain there must be a
[127:45] few things like the worst things the
[127:48] worst things I can remember. Can't they
[127:49] hang on to? No, I can't. I can't hang on
[127:52] to them.
[127:55] >> And they'll hurt me if I do.
[127:59] And they'll end up hurting other people
[128:00] too because what is hurting us that's
[128:04] left stuck there doesn't just stay
[128:07] inside. Then it says, "Give and it will
[128:10] be given to you. A good measure pressed
[128:12] down, shaken together, and running over
[128:15] will be poured out into your lap. For
[128:17] with the measure you use, it would be
[128:20] measured back to you." So, you know,
[128:23] that's saying that if we're
[128:26] judgmental and condemning that that's
[128:29] the measure that we'll receive, right?
[128:32] But if we're seeing the image of God in
[128:35] other people and desiring good for them
[128:37] and not judging and not condemning,
[128:40] then then we'll receive that.
[128:44] That that's that's what I want to
[128:46] receive.
[128:48] I don't I don't want
[128:51] God to have a bone to pick with me about
[128:53] my condemnation and attitudes about
[128:56] other people. And and it's very simple
[129:00] to for that bone to not exist. I just
[129:02] need to not not be that way,
[129:05] >> not condemn. So there's a couple things
[129:09] else here and I'll be done.
[129:12] Um
[129:21] let's see.
[129:28] Yeah, you you know what? I I may just
[129:29] dispense with those and rather just
[129:32] comment that in in our in our HAR for
[129:35] today.
[129:37] Um
[129:39] there's some judging and misjudging.
[129:43] Um
[129:44] there's a u there there are people who
[129:48] may represent opportunities to be
[129:50] judgmental. There's Panina who taunts
[129:54] Hana.
[129:56] uh and makes her miserable.
[129:59] Um we might want to judge her,
[130:03] but but you know, I think the husband
[130:07] loved Hana more than her. And maybe the
[130:11] problem was he had two wives to begin
[130:13] with. But at any rate, then, you know,
[130:15] then Eli judges her harshly as a as a
[130:18] drunk and worthless woman. But then, but
[130:21] then he does bless. He does bless after
[130:24] the fact.
[130:26] and and the blessing comes to pass. And
[130:30] I want to suggest that
[130:34] Hana after having poured out her heart
[130:37] before the Lord left and was very
[130:41] different. She her countenance was
[130:43] lifted up though she had not yet
[130:46] received what she had asked for. But I
[130:48] believe she believed she was going to
[130:50] and it just changed everything. We need
[130:52] we need to believe
[130:54] in the things that we can't see yet that
[130:59] that God is working even if we can't see
[131:02] it whether we're looking at somebody
[131:04] else or oursel actually both. We need to
[131:06] be that way toward oursel and other
[131:09] people. And then and then there's a
[131:12] husband who I mean he really really does
[131:14] love her but come on I mean he was kind
[131:19] of a dimwit. He he did not understand at
[131:21] all.
[131:23] Like really,
[131:25] he desperately desires a child and he's
[131:29] saying, "Hey, you know what's the
[131:32] problem? I I mean, I'm better to you
[131:34] than does he say 10 sons or
[131:37] >> does he say 10 or seven?"
[131:39] >> 10. And you know, I mean, you just like,
[131:43] come on. Come on. Come on. Come on.
[131:45] You're just You're really not getting
[131:46] it. And we could we could hold that
[131:49] against him.
[131:51] But um
[131:53] anyway, God was working in the situation
[131:55] and he brought about good even though
[131:57] there were things that we could blame
[131:59] people for.
[132:01] And there are other things you could
[132:02] judge Eli for. But I'm just suggesting
[132:04] that when we look at any character,
[132:06] whether they're a biblical character or
[132:08] one that's just down the block or right
[132:11] next to us,
[132:13] that that we see them as
[132:16] human beings made in God's image and
[132:19] that we would desire
[132:22] we would really just desire for
[132:25] ourselves and for them the reaffirmation
[132:29] of our own self and theirs in the image
[132:32] of
[132:34] So with that I will close.
[132:39] >> So we will be uh moving back to the
[132:41] moxur for the Torah service sorry
[132:44] chauffear service on page eight the
[132:48] goods for the day.
[133:08] Okay.
[133:25] >> All right.
[133:32] You revealed yourself in a cloud of
[133:34] glory to your holy people. From the
[133:36] heavens they heard your voice and you
[133:39] manifested yourself to them in clouds of
[133:42] purity. The whole world trembled at your
[133:45] presence and your creation stood in awe
[133:47] before you when you, oh our king,
[133:50] revealed yourself on Mount Si to teach
[133:53] your people your Torah and instructions,
[133:56] causing them to hear your majestic voice
[133:59] and your holy words from flames of fire.
[134:02] Amid thunder and lightning, you revealed
[134:04] yourself to them and you shone forth on
[134:08] them as the chauffar was sounded. And on
[134:11] the third day in the morning, there was
[134:13] thunder and lightning and a dense cloud
[134:16] over the mountain. And the chauffear
[134:18] sounded loudly, and all the people in
[134:21] the camp trembled. The sound of the
[134:23] chauffear grew louder and louder. Moses
[134:26] spoke, and God answered him. And all the
[134:30] people perceived the thunders and the
[134:31] lightnings and the sound of the
[134:33] chauffear and the mountain smoking. And
[134:36] when the people saw it, they trembled
[134:39] and stood a far off.
[134:42] God ascended with a shout. The Lord with
[134:44] the sound of the chauffear with trumpets
[134:47] and sound of the chauffear. Raise
[134:51] joyful voices before the king. the Lord.
[134:55] Sound the chauffear on the new moon and
[134:57] on the full moon for our festival day.
[135:00] For it is a statute for Israel, an
[135:03] ordinance of the God of Jacob.
[135:09] >> Just a minute.
[135:10] >> What?
[135:20] Sherikana
[135:25] chauffear.
[135:26] Blessed are you, oh Lord our God, King
[135:28] of the universe, who has sanctified us
[135:31] by your word and commanded us to hear
[135:35] the chauffear call.
[135:36] >> Amen.
[135:37] >> Amen.
[135:38] >> With the congregation standing, each
[135:41] call is announced and then blown with
[135:45] absolute perfection.
[135:51] and the congregation is invited not to
[135:53] be judgmental.
[135:56] Um,
[136:01] each call is announced and then blown
[136:03] with the congregation heeding the sound
[136:05] of the calls. The tea is a long single
[136:09] call to awaken. The chevarim is a
[136:12] threeote broken reframe, a crying out
[136:16] from the distressed to us for relief.
[136:19] The trua, a series of nine or more
[136:23] blasts is the alarm.
[136:27] But who's counting? The call to assembly
[136:30] and to battle. The final tea, the tea is
[136:34] the great tea.
[136:37] So, um,
[136:39] >> do you need water?
[136:41] >> H,
[136:42] >> do you need water?
[136:43] >> I might. Is there some there?
[136:47] Craig's uh taking care of that.
[136:53] >> Just give him a second.
[137:09] There we go.
[137:14] >> Oh, it's here.
[137:28] Tea
[137:32] Subarim Terua.
[137:46] >> The Turua part.
[137:48] >> What?
[137:49] >> You're on the Turua part.
[137:51] >> Chevua.
[137:54] >> Yeah. I guess it's different than what
[137:56] I'm used to.
[138:04] Tea.
[138:07] Tea.
[138:11] Severe. Terua.
[138:22] Tea.
[138:26] Tea.
[138:29] Subarim. Terua.
[138:38] Tequia
[138:45] Submarine.
[138:50] Tea.
[138:53] Teia.
[138:56] Subar.
[139:00] Tequia
[139:04] tea.
[139:08] Chevy
[139:12] tea.
[139:15] >> Tea.
[139:18] >> Tequia. Terua. Tea.
[139:21] >> The last
[139:22] >> The last three lines.
[139:22] >> The last three lines.
[139:26] >> So tea.
[139:28] >> Yeah. The last three lines are
[139:31] Where are we?
[139:32] >> The last three lines.
[139:33] >> Last three lines. No, I got it, man. I
[139:35] thought it was
[139:37] >> Oh, yeah. I was following. Okay, that's
[139:39] fine.
[139:40] >> Tequia.
[140:00] Tequia
[140:11] the
[140:14] same.
[140:24] >> Praise the Lord. Hallelujah. Praise God
[140:27] in his sanctuary. Praise him in the
[140:30] mighty expanse. Praise him for his
[140:33] saving deeds. Praise him according to
[140:35] his abundant greatness. Praise him with
[140:38] the blast of the show. Praise him with
[140:41] sultry and heart. Praise him with timber
[140:44] and dance. Praise him with string
[140:46] instruments and pipe. Praise him with
[140:49] resounding symbols. Praise him with
[140:52] clanging symbols. Everything that has
[140:54] breath, praise the Lord. Hallelujah.
[140:58] >> All you inhabitants of the world and
[141:00] dwellers on earth, when a banner is
[141:02] lifted up on the mountain, see it. And
[141:05] when the chauffear is sounded, hear it.
[141:10] On that day a great chauffear shall be
[141:13] sounded and they shall come who were
[141:15] lost in the land of Assyria
[141:18] and they who were dispersed in the land
[141:20] of Egypt and they shall worship the Lord
[141:23] on the holy mountain at Jerusalem. The
[141:26] Lord shall be revealed to them and his
[141:28] arrows will go forth as lightning. The
[141:31] Lord shall sound the chauffear and shall
[141:34] go in the whirlwinds of the south. The
[141:36] Lord of hosts will defend them. So be a
[141:39] shield over your people Israel with your
[141:42] peace. Our God and God of our fathers,
[141:45] sound the great chauffear for our
[141:47] freedom. Set up the banner to gather our
[141:50] exiles. Assemble our scattered ones from
[141:52] among the nations and gather our
[141:55] dispersed from the uttermost parts of
[141:57] the earth. Lead us with celebration and
[142:00] with everlasting joy to Zion, your city,
[142:04] to Jerusalem, the place of your
[142:06] sanctuary, where you will offer that
[142:09] which is prescribed by the Torah.
[142:13] On the day of your gladness and on your
[142:15] festivals and on new moons, you shall
[142:18] sound the chauffear over your offerings,
[142:20] and they shall be reminders to you
[142:22] before your God. I am the Lord your God.
[142:26] For you hear the sound of the chauffar
[142:28] and give heed to its call. There is none
[142:31] like you. Deserving of praise are you,
[142:33] oh Lord, who in mercy hears the
[142:36] chauffear sounds of your people Israel.
[142:45] chauffear. Blessed are you, oh Lord, our
[142:48] God, King of the universe, who has

[145:10] and flashes to the west, so shall the
[145:12] coming of the son of man be. The Lord
[145:15] himself will descend from heaven with a
[145:17] shout, with a voice of the archangel,
[145:20] and with a chauffear of God, and the
[145:23] dead in Messiah shall rise first. Then
[145:26] we who remain alive shall be caught up
[145:28] together with them in the clouds to meet
[145:30] the Lord in the air. And so we shall
[145:34] always be with the Lord.
[145:38] May it be your will that the sounding of
[145:40] the chauffear which we have done will be
[145:42] embroidered in the veil by the appointed
[145:44] angel as you accepted it by Elijah of
[145:49] blessed memory and by Yeshua the prince
[145:51] of the face and the one who sits on
[145:55] God's throne. May you be filled with
[145:57] compassion to us. Deservian of praise
[146:00] are you Lord of compassion

[151:55] false gods shall be at an end. Then
[151:57] shall the world be perfected under the
[151:59] rule of the Lord Almighty, and all
[152:02] mankind shall call upon your name. For
[152:05] to you every knee must bow and every
[152:07] tongue declare that you are God. re over

[157:00] was formed. He reigned alone. When by
[157:04] his will all things were wrought, then
[157:08] was his sovereign name made known. And
[157:12] when this age shall cease to be, he
[157:16] still shall reign in majesty.
[157:20] He was, he is, and he will be. All
[157:24] glorious,
[157:26] eternally

[158:44] that long. So, I'm sorry to disappoint.
[158:48] Sometimes it happens. Um, next next year
[158:52] I'll plan on a much longer message.
[158:56] Um, so
[158:58] the Lord bless you and keep you. The
