[00:12] >> In Christian scholarship, a name [00:14] commonly given to the first main section [00:17] of the Gospel of John is called the Book [00:20] of Signs. Before that, John's prologue [00:23] is a highly inspired hymn to the word [00:26] that's majestically, I believe, on a [00:29] literary level with Genesis chapter 1. [00:32] John's prologue begins "In the beginning [00:35] was the word. [00:37] And the word was with God. [00:40] And the word was God." [00:43] And it goes on, "And the word became [00:45] flesh and dwelt among us. And we beheld [00:48] his glory, the glory as of the only [00:51] begotten of the Father, full of grace [00:54] and truth." [00:56] Then follows the Book of Signs, [00:58] beginning from verse 19 of John chapter [01:01] 1 through to the end of chapter 12. [01:05] As I said, theologians call these [01:07] chapters the Book of Signs, named for [01:10] seven notable signs or miracles wrought [01:13] by Jesus to give absolute assurance of [01:16] salvation to anyone who believes in him. [01:32] Shalom. I'm Christine Darg. [01:34] The Gospel of John focuses upon a number [01:37] of miraculous signs that the Apostle [01:40] John specifically selected to write [01:43] about. And he testified that Jesus also [01:45] performed many other signs in the [01:48] presence of his disciples, which are not [01:51] recorded in the Gospel of John. [01:53] However, Jesus' public signs that John [01:56] specifically selected to share were [01:59] recorded for the purpose that you may [02:01] believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the [02:04] Son of God, [02:06] and that by believing you may have [02:08] eternal life in his name. [02:11] And the last verse of the Gospel of John [02:14] in John 21:25 [02:16] also declares, [02:18] "There are many more things that Jesus [02:19] did. [02:21] If all of them were written down one by [02:22] one, I suppose that not even the world [02:26] itself would have space for the books [02:28] that would be written." [02:31] According to the commentaries, that [02:32] statement was not unhealthy hyperbole [02:36] because the extraordinary significance [02:38] of the blessed life and actions of the [02:40] Son of God were ample justification [02:44] for John's enthusiasm. [02:46] After all, every moment of the Lord's [02:48] life was infinitely rich in his deeds, [02:51] words, and influence. [02:54] His every action was a revelation of his [02:57] heavenly Father. [02:59] So, the miracles that John specifically [03:02] selected were recorded for our benefit [03:05] that we might believe and have the gift [03:06] of eternal life in the name of Jesus, [03:09] or Yeshua, his Hebrew name. [03:12] The signs are meant to bring us to [03:14] absolute assurance in the salvation that [03:16] was procured for us by Jesus through the [03:19] travail of his soul in his passion on [03:22] the cross during Passover. [03:25] The theme of John's Gospel is simply to [03:28] believe. [03:30] Jesus did many other things, but these [03:32] signs are written, John said, "that you [03:35] may believe." [03:37] And the seven signs are arranged [03:40] chronologically in John's Gospel. [03:43] So, let's consider them. [03:46] The first of the public signs is [03:48] recorded in John chapter 2. [03:52] At a wedding in the village of Cana in [03:53] the Galilee, the wine had run out. And [03:56] to keep the host from embarrassment, [03:59] Jesus' mother Mary suggested that he do [04:02] something. [04:03] So, Jesus decided to change water that [04:06] was stored in ceremonial stone jars into [04:10] wine. [04:11] The miracle showed his power over [04:13] nature. [04:15] The text says, "Nearby stood six stone [04:18] water jars, [04:20] the kind used by the Jews for [04:22] purification, [04:24] that is, ceremonial washing, [04:26] and each jar holding from 20 to 30 [04:29] gallons." [04:31] So, the wedding must have taken place at [04:33] a synagogue or nearby as the verse [04:35] alludes. [04:37] At Jesus' command, the servants of the [04:40] wedding feast filled the jars to the [04:41] brim with water. [04:44] This task was done by the servants of [04:47] the wedding feast so that there would be [04:49] no opportunity of accusation that Jesus' [04:52] disciples had faked a miracle. [04:56] The jars were to be filled to the brim [04:58] with water so that no wine could be [05:00] poured in, making a mixture. [05:03] In fact, wine had never been stored in [05:06] these ceremonial vessels of [05:08] purification. [05:10] Immediately, the miracle wine was taken [05:12] to the master of the banquet, [05:14] who announced with surprise, [05:17] "Everyone brings out the choice wine [05:19] first, and then the cheaper wine [05:24] after the guests have had too much to [05:26] the best wine till last." [05:30] Well, back in 1997, I met an [05:32] archaeologist in Israel who was [05:34] searching for the temple treasures. [05:36] His name was Dr. Gary Collett, and he [05:39] shared fascinating insights about the [05:41] water that Jesus had changed into wine. [05:45] John 2:6 says that the water in the six [05:49] stone jars was after the manner of the [05:52] purifying of the Jews. [05:54] So, this was holy water that had been [05:58] purified by being mixed with water [06:01] sanctified by the ashes of the red [06:02] heifer in Jerusalem. [06:05] That water was the most sanctified water [06:07] in Israel. [06:09] And the synagogues throughout the land [06:10] of Israel contained the sacred water for [06:13] ceremonial purposes of purification. [06:17] Dr. Colette said that the wedding at [06:19] Cana must have taken place at a [06:20] synagogue or near a synagogue. And he [06:24] said that the first miracle was that [06:26] Jesus had divine authority to tamper [06:29] with the sacred water without [06:31] retribution. [06:33] Not only was the purification water [06:35] mixed with regular water under the [06:37] instruction of Jesus, [06:39] but the water was thoroughly changed [06:41] into the best wine. [06:44] By this, Jesus demonstrated his divinity [06:47] and authority over and above the temple [06:51] system. [06:53] Another interesting side note is that [06:55] Moses had prophesied about the future [06:57] Messiah in the Torah in Deuteronomy [07:00] 18:15. [07:02] And the first miraculous plague in Egypt [07:04] under the ministry of Moses [07:06] was turning water into blood. [07:10] The first public miracle of Jesus was [07:12] turning water [07:14] into wine. [07:17] Now, what was the second attesting sign [07:19] specifically selected by John in his [07:21] book of signs revealing Jesus as [07:24] Messiah? [07:27] John chose the healing from a distance [07:29] of a nobleman's son as recorded in John [07:32] chapter 4. [07:34] The royal official's son lay sick at [07:36] Capernaum and was about to die. [07:40] But when the father heard Jesus was in [07:42] the Galilee, he found Jesus and begged [07:45] him to come and heal his son. [07:47] In verse 48, Jesus remonstrated, [07:51] "Unless you people see miraculous signs [07:53] and wonders, you simply will never [07:55] believe." [07:57] "Sir," the official persisted, "come [07:59] before my child dies." [08:02] But Jesus answered, "Go. [08:04] Your son will live." [08:07] Jesus spoke with such authority that the [08:09] man took Jesus at his word and departed [08:12] to go home. [08:13] And he learned that his son recovered at [08:16] the exact same hour that Jesus [08:18] proclaimed his healing. And so, the [08:20] nobleman and all his household believed. [08:24] This sign demonstrated that Jesus is [08:26] master of time, space, and distance. A [08:29] sign to all people that Jesus is not [08:32] just a mere man, but God incarnate. [08:36] And there's another lesson here. [08:39] Do we have the faith to take God at his [08:41] word like that nobleman? For example, [08:44] God says in his word, "All have sinned." [08:47] Do we realize that by nature we're [08:49] sinners in need of the savior? [08:53] This word is just full of promises. [08:56] Jesus cried in a loud voice on the [08:58] cross, "It is finished." [09:01] Have you accepted your salvation as a [09:03] finished work? Have you put your trust [09:06] in the redeemer? Or are you still [09:08] thinking as many do, [09:10] "I must do something to secure my [09:12] salvation." But Jesus said, "It is [09:15] finished." [09:16] Jesus also said, "I'll never turn away [09:19] anyone who comes to me." [09:21] So, do you say, [09:23] "I fear he will not receive me." [09:26] God says the blood of Jesus Christ [09:28] cleanses from all sin. [09:32] Do you question this truth or do you [09:34] receive it with joy? [09:36] And God says, [09:38] "I will provide for you." [09:40] Do you take God at His word like the [09:41] noble man did in John chapter 4? [09:44] Or are you always anxious? [09:49] Well, the third sign recorded in the [09:51] Gospel of John was the healing of the [09:53] paralytic man [09:55] in John chapter 5 at Jerusalem's pool of [09:58] Bethesda. [10:00] Bethesda means house of mercy. [10:03] Jesus wasn't found in laundry palaces, [10:05] but in the haunts of misery. [10:09] Jesus visited the pool of Bethesda [10:11] because of the misery congregated there. [10:14] So many hapless souls were hoping for [10:16] the restoration of their health. [10:19] But a certain lame man was especially [10:21] miserable [10:22] having suffered helplessness for 38 [10:25] years. [10:26] This seemed resigned to his [10:29] fate. [10:30] But Jesus embodies help [10:33] for the helpless. [10:35] And this third sign of the miraculous [10:37] healing of the paralytic demonstrated [10:39] Jesus' power over time, sickness, [10:42] and despair. [10:44] The Messiah, the anointed one, [10:47] shows compassion on those who are [10:49] helpless and who have been reduced in [10:52] body, faith, and spirit. [10:56] Jesus first asked the man, and this is [10:58] an important point, [11:00] "Do you want to be well?" [11:03] On the surface, wasn't that an obvious [11:05] question? It [11:06] brings to mind Jesus' healing in Mark [11:08] chapter 10 of blind Bartimaeus [11:11] who cried out in Jericho as Jesus passed [11:14] by, [11:15] "Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on [11:18] me." [11:20] Before healing Bartimaeus, Jesus had [11:21] asked, [11:22] "What do you want me to do for you?" [11:25] So why did Jesus sometimes ask afflicted [11:28] persons these questions? [11:30] It concerns the importance of a person's [11:33] will and consent. [11:36] Jesus didn't heal people against their [11:38] will. [11:39] The man protested that he had no one to [11:42] help him at the pool of Bethesda. [11:45] Jesus commanded the paralytic, [11:48] "Rise, take up your mat." [11:51] And that was the voice of divine [11:52] authority. [11:54] And immediately the man was made whole. [11:57] The human race by sin is spiritually [12:00] sick and helpless. But the risen Messiah [12:03] asks us all the penetrating question, [12:06] "Do you really want to be made whole?" [12:10] He's willing and able if we're willing [12:12] to put our faith and trust in him. [12:15] The whole world is Bethesda, the house [12:18] of mercy. [12:19] There is much suffering in our world, [12:21] but the Lord's mercy has come to this [12:24] world. [12:27] The fourth and fifth signs reported by [12:29] John are both found in chapter 6. [12:33] Jesus' feeding of the multitude of 5,000 [12:36] through the multiplication of a little [12:38] boy's lunch, [12:39] and Jesus walking on the water of the [12:42] Sea of Galilee. [12:44] Both of these signs demonstrated Jesus' [12:46] divine power over nature. [12:50] Sign number six was the the miraculous [12:53] healing of the man who was blind from [12:57] birth. [12:58] This was a Messianic miracle of [13:00] prophetic significance, and the rabbis [13:03] should have recognized it as such. [13:06] John chapter 9 is given over entirely to [13:08] this miraculous account, and [13:10] demonstrates that Jesus is the creator, [13:13] God incarnate, God in the flesh. [13:18] Sign number seven recorded in John [13:20] chapter 11 is the raising of Jesus' [13:23] friend Lazarus from the dead after 4 [13:26] days in the tomb, [13:28] demonstrating Jesus' mastery over death. [13:34] Some Bible scholars have emphasized a [13:36] sequence of not just seven signs, but [13:39] eight signs in the Gospel of John, [13:42] concluding with the miraculous catch of [13:44] fish in chapter 21 [13:47] in one of the post-resurrection [13:49] appearances of Jesus. [13:51] The disciples had temporarily gone back [13:53] to fishing, but had caught nothing. [13:56] The resurrected Jesus stood on the shore [13:58] and called out to them, [14:01] "Cast your net on the right side of the [14:03] boat." [14:04] They did, and they were unable to haul [14:07] in the net because of the large [14:10] number of fish. [14:12] John recognized this as the work of the [14:14] miracle worker, so he exclaimed, "It is [14:18] the Lord." At which Peter jumped into [14:20] the water to meet Jesus, [14:22] an aspect often illustrated in Christian [14:25] art. While the other disciples towed in [14:28] the net [14:30] full of 153 [14:32] large fish. [14:35] Still other scholars have emphasized the [14:37] eighth sign as [14:39] being the resurrection of Jesus himself. [14:43] But you see, actually, not just the [14:45] Gospel of John, but the entire Bible is [14:49] a book of signs. [14:51] It's a book of miracles. [14:53] According to Bible teacher Chuck Missler [14:56] of blessed memory, who was an [14:58] information scientist, the recurrence of [15:01] the number seven is found throughout the [15:02] Bible, both on the surface and also in [15:06] the structure of the text. [15:08] This phenomenon is widely recognized by [15:11] scholars. [15:12] Some prominent sevens in the Bible are [15:14] the establishment of the Sabbath on the [15:17] seventh day, [15:18] the seven years of plenty and the seven [15:21] years of famine in the book of Genesis, [15:25] the seven priests and seven trumpets [15:27] marching around Jericho, [15:30] the seventh sabbatical year when the [15:32] land is supposed to rest. [15:35] Also, Solomon's building the temple for [15:37] 7 years. [15:39] The leper Naaman was instructed to wash [15:41] in the river seven times. [15:44] And in the book of Revelation, there are [15:46] seven churches, seven stars, seven [15:50] golden lampstands, seven seals, seven [15:53] trumpets, [15:55] seven bowls of judgment, all showing the [15:58] consistent use of the number seven. [16:02] As you may know, [16:03] both Hebrew and Greek assign numerical [16:06] values to the alphabet letters. [16:09] Therefore, any specific word in either [16:11] Hebrew or Greek has a numerical value of [16:14] its own [16:16] by adding up the values of the letters [16:18] in any particular word. [16:20] Various mathematical patterns of sevens [16:22] and multiples of sevens [16:24] are not only intriguing to discover in [16:26] the Bible, they also demonstrate an [16:29] intricacy of design [16:32] testifying to the Bible's supernatural [16:34] origin. [16:36] Chuck Missler used to say that the [16:37] chances of recurring sevens happening by [16:41] statistical accident are phenomenally [16:44] unlikely. [16:46] Under the structure of the biblical [16:47] text, there's a deliberate numerical [16:49] design. [16:51] And the person who discovered many of [16:52] these things was Dr. Ivan Panin, [16:55] who researched the Bible's structure of [16:58] heptads, [17:00] referring to the number seven, [17:02] God's signature. [17:04] Not only did God give Moses the Torah, [17:06] he gave it to Moses letter by letter. [17:09] And Chuck Missler said, "If you would [17:11] dare to change one letter in the Hebrew [17:14] or Greek text, you would be tampering [17:17] with the mathematical structures [17:19] underneath the text. [17:22] So, the Bible is indeed a book of signs [17:25] because of its prophetic nature as well. [17:28] God declares the end from the beginning. [17:32] Although no one knows the day or hour of [17:34] the return of Yeshua, our Messiah, [17:36] there are clues given in scripture about [17:38] the conditions of the world before his [17:41] return. [17:42] And Jesus himself gave parables [17:44] admonishing to be watching for his [17:47] imminent return. [17:49] The Apostle Paul said that followers of [17:51] the Lord can know the season of [17:53] Messiah's return [17:56] and warned that he will come as a thief [17:58] in the night for those who are not [18:01] watching. [18:02] The Apostle Paul also forewarned of the [18:04] rise of worldwide godlessness as well as [18:08] the apostasy [18:10] of the institutional churches. [18:12] Other scriptures foretold the rebirth of [18:15] the nation of Israel [18:17] along with the Jews' desire to rebuild [18:19] their temple, [18:21] the rise of worldwide tyrannical [18:24] government, [18:26] the rise of Antichrist, and the coming [18:28] great tribulation. [18:31] In addition to these general signs, [18:33] however, [18:34] there are also seminal prophecies in the [18:36] book of Daniel. [18:38] In Daniel 9:24, [18:40] the prophet Daniel recorded a message [18:42] from the angel Gabriel [18:44] that 70 sevens [18:47] There is that number seven again. [18:49] Meaning 70 weeks of years, or in other [18:52] words, 490 years remained at that time [18:57] in Jewish redemptive history. [19:00] Particularly interesting is that the [19:01] climatic 70th week, [19:05] the last seven years in Israel's [19:07] history, [19:09] was specifically set apart by the angel [19:11] Gabriel as a separate set of 7 years [19:15] to be kept separate from the previous 69 [19:19] weeks of years in Jewish history. [19:22] Thus, the angel Gabriel prophesied a [19:24] gap, [19:26] an interruption in Israel's history, and [19:29] it turns out that this gap has stretched [19:32] to nearly 2,000 years. [19:35] Theologians call this gap [19:37] the age of grace or the church age. [19:41] The gap was explained in Daniel 9 verse [19:44] 26. [19:45] Gabriel said that Messiah the prince [19:48] would be cut off, [19:49] but not for himself, [19:51] and that the execution of the Messiah [19:54] would be followed by desolations [19:56] determined upon the Jewish people, [19:59] a prediction of their world wide [20:03] dispersion. [20:05] So, now we're living during the gap of [20:06] time between Israel's 69th and 70th [20:10] weeks of years according to Gabriel's [20:12] prophecy. [20:13] This gap will be completed when the [20:16] fullness of the Gentiles is brought into [20:18] the church. [20:19] Presently, the manner in which a person [20:21] may attain right relationship with God [20:25] is to believe the gospel and receive the [20:27] Messiah who was cut off in order to make [20:31] atonement for all who put their trust [20:33] and faith in him as savior, the lamb of [20:36] God. [20:38] Israel's last 70th week of 7 years [20:42] is yet to be fulfilled in the future, [20:45] but Jesus gave many signs called birth [20:47] pains [20:48] that the times of the Gentiles are [20:50] coming to a conclusion and that Israel's [20:53] redemption is near. [20:56] It's fascinating that Bible prophecy not [20:58] only sets apart Israel's last 70th week [21:02] of years, [21:04] but Bible prophecy also divides Israel's [21:06] final 70th week of years [21:09] into two equal parts. [21:11] Each consisting of 3 and 1/2 years or 42 [21:15] months. [21:16] The first half of the 70th week will be [21:19] a time of a temporary but false peace [21:22] covenant. But, according to Daniel 9:27, [21:26] in the middle of the week, in other [21:28] words, after 3 and 1/2 years, [21:31] a future evil ruler known as [21:33] anti-Messiah, [21:35] Antichrist, will break a covenant and he [21:38] will desecrate worship in the rebuilt [21:40] Jewish temple, [21:41] declaring himself to be God. [21:44] Jesus alluded to this prophecy of the [21:46] book of Daniel in his discourse on the [21:48] Mount of Olives in Matthew chapter 24. [21:51] And he said, "When that abomination of [21:54] desolation occurs, then let those who [21:57] are in Judea flee to the mountains." [22:00] Because the Antichrist will persecute [22:01] the Jewish people, but Jesus said they [22:04] will be protected by God in the [22:06] mountains. [22:07] In fact, Bible prophecy indicates that [22:09] the Jewish remnant will be protected in [22:12] the stronghold of Petra, which is [22:15] located in Jordan. [22:17] Then Jesus will return at the end of [22:19] Israel's 70th week and will gather in [22:22] the outcast of Zion. [22:25] With all of the signs that are given in [22:27] this book of signs, [22:30] the question I need to ask now is, [22:33] "What are you going to do with Messiah, [22:35] the Christ?" [22:36] Christ means the anointed one, Mashiach [22:40] in Hebrew, Christos in Greek. [22:44] In fact, Christology is the branch of [22:46] theology relating to the to the person, [22:49] nature, and role of the Messiah. [22:52] "By this you know the spirit of God." [22:54] According to 1 John 4:2, [22:58] "Every spirit that confesses Jesus [22:59] Christ having come in the flesh is of [23:02] God. [23:03] And every spirit, says verse three, that [23:06] does not confess Jesus is not from God. [23:09] That is the spirit of Antichrist, of [23:12] which you have heard that is coming and [23:14] now is already in the world. [23:18] So you see the bottom line of truth [23:20] revolves around Christology. [23:23] What you make of Christ is the litmus [23:25] test of truth. [23:27] In fact, according to Revelation 19:10, [23:32] Jesus the Messiah is the theme of all [23:35] Bible prophecy. [23:36] Meaning his personhood is the theme of [23:38] prophecy in both the Hebrew [23:41] and the New Testament. [23:43] That's why the Apostle Paul insisted, [23:45] "We preach Messiah crucified." [23:49] Why must Jesus be preached as crucified? [23:52] Why is that so central? [23:54] Because he died according to the [23:56] scriptures and he was raised on the [23:58] third day according to the scriptures. [24:01] But the Bible warns us that there are [24:03] going to be many Antichrists and many [24:06] false Christs to trouble us in the world [24:08] and the closer we come to the end of the [24:10] church age, the more pseudo Christs will [24:15] proliferate. [24:17] Today we're contending for the true [24:18] faith [24:20] despite depictions of a false [24:22] sentimental Jesus [24:24] or a false Christ of liberal liberation [24:27] theology. [24:29] Then there's the false Jesus of [24:31] Mormonism and many other cults. [24:34] We have to believe in the real biblical [24:37] Jesus. He's not just a prophet. [24:40] Because salvation comes by believing [24:44] in the living savior, the son of God. [24:47] That's the Apostle John's whole point in [24:49] his book of signs that you might believe [24:52] that Jesus is the Messiah, the son of [24:54] God and that believing you may have [24:57] eternal life in his name. [25:00] When Jesus asked in Matthew 16:13, [25:04] "Who do men say that I am?" [25:07] He asked the very fundamental question, [25:09] "Who is Jesus Christ?" [25:12] That's the most important question. [25:14] Many heresies throughout church history [25:17] have attacked the nature of the Lord [25:19] Jesus. [25:20] For example, Arianism, named after a [25:22] heretic named Arius, [25:25] erroneously claimed that Jesus was not [25:27] God, but that he was a created being. [25:30] The Council of Nicaea was convened to [25:32] correct that heresy. [25:34] And this icon shows the council [25:37] putting down Arius and his heresy. [25:43] The Apostles' Creed is the most accurate [25:45] representation of the Christian faith in [25:47] the form of a creed. In fact, [25:49] understanding the tenets of the [25:51] Apostles' Creed [25:52] will place you on the rock of the [25:54] gospel. [25:56] If the 12 apostles had a website today, [25:58] their about us page would summarize [26:01] their beliefs with the Apostles' Creed. [26:05] With so many charges of anti-Semitism [26:07] against the institutional churches, [26:09] lately I've been musing on the fact that [26:12] thankfully the Apostles' Creed is [26:15] absolutely devoid of anti-Semitism. [26:18] The Bible promises when you believe that [26:20] God raised Jesus from the dead and [26:21] confess Jesus as Lord, you shall be [26:24] saved. [26:25] The good news is that while the world is [26:28] preparing for war, scripture assures us [26:30] that heaven is preparing for a wedding, [26:34] the marriage supper of the lamb with his [26:35] bride, the called out saved believers. [26:39] While hell is enlarging itself on earth, [26:42] heaven is putting the finishing touches [26:44] on the marriage supper. [26:46] Amen. [26:48] Perhaps your life has been shattered by [26:49] all the a warfare that's going on in [26:51] this fallen world. [26:53] God loved you so much that he died for [26:55] your sins on the cross. [26:58] Jesus took on himself the punishment [27:00] that you and I rightly deserve. [27:02] Perhaps you feel your life is nothing [27:03] but a collection of [27:05] broken pieces, but don't forget although [27:09] mosaics are made from little broken [27:11] pieces, they can still be made into [27:15] beautiful and meaningful works of art. [27:19] Why not say to the savior, [27:21] "Lord, if you want the broken pieces of [27:23] my life, take them. I give you my life [27:26] for your safekeeping and service [27:29] because I love you and I want to follow [27:30] you all the remaining days of my life." [27:35] Amen. [27:36] I encourage you to let your faith find [27:38] its resting place in the Lord Jesus. [27:41] And now may the grace of our Lord Jesus [27:43] and the love of God [27:44] and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be [27:46] with us all now and evermore. [27:50] Amen.
