Transcript [00:00] In the bizarre Hollywood [00:02] controversy of the day, [00:05] there's a show. It's a show, I will [00:07] admit, I have no interest in watching. [00:10] The show is um on Netflix. Uh the the [00:13] show is called Nobody Wants This, which [00:15] ironically enough describes my own [00:16] reaction to the show. Uh the show is [00:18] based on a book written by one Aaron [00:20] Foster, who is a woman who converted via [00:23] reform Judaism to Judaism, which is to [00:25] say, yeah, let's put it this way. the [00:27] the Orthodox do not approve of reformed [00:30] conversions. They do not believe that [00:31] reformed conversions are real. Namely [00:32] because reformed Judaism is not a a [00:34] particularly demanding form of of [00:36] Judaism. It doesn't require any sort of [00:38] ritual adherence. It doesn't require a [00:39] belief in in most of the actual tenants [00:41] of Jud Judaism or Jewishness. [00:44] So they decided to make an entire series [00:45] about on Netflix because this is the way [00:47] it works at Netflix. If you're going to [00:48] make a series about Jews, they are [00:50] they're either secular or basically [00:52] they're like slightly more than secular. [00:54] Kind of like My Big Fat Greek Wedding [00:56] type Jewish [00:57] or their repressive. Those are the kinds [01:00] of Jews that you see on on Netflix. [01:02] Occasionally, you'll see FA and that's [01:04] really more just about Israelis than it [01:05] is about Jewishness, per se. Okay? But [01:08] controversy broke out because believe it [01:10] or not, you'll be you'll be shocked to [01:11] know that one of the actors in Nobody [01:14] Wants This, which is again starring Adam [01:16] Brody and Kristen Bell. Adam Brody plays [01:18] a reformed rabbi who is dating a [01:19] non-Jewish woman played by Kristen Bell, [01:21] who's supposed to be Aaron Foster. [01:24] Adam Brody decided it would be an [01:25] amazing time to as a Jew this thing. And [01:28] so Adam Brody was born Jewish. He has no [01:30] relationship with Judaism. He's [01:32] completely secular. [01:34] But he did an interview with GQ in which [01:36] he said, quote, "Put me down as thinking [01:37] it's a genocide about Israel. Put me [01:39] down as wanting a free Palestine. It's [01:41] awful that it's taken so much death and [01:42] misery, but it does feel like it's [01:43] reaching a breaking point that it should [01:45] have a while ago." [01:48] So he is using his platform as a fake [01:51] reform rabbi on a show about [01:54] intermarriage essentially or quasi [01:56] intermarriage to mouth off about about [02:01] Israel and free Palestine and all the [02:03] rest. Now none of that is shocking. [02:04] Hollywood actors being obnoxious. That's [02:06] kind of the way that it goes. What is a [02:08] little bit interesting is that he's [02:09] actually receiving some push back from [02:11] other people associated with the show. [02:12] So Erin Foster, [02:14] she uh she basically said, "Yeah, [02:17] disagree, hard disagree on this one." [02:21] >> You know, it's um it's complicated. I [02:24] think, you know, our work environment, [02:26] our set is very similar to dinner tables [02:31] around the world where people are having [02:33] debate and discussion and disagreeing. [02:35] And you know, while I love Adam, I also [02:39] disagree with him. And that's okay. I [02:41] think that as the creator of the show, [02:44] all I can say is that I want our Jewish [02:47] fans to know that I see you and I hear [02:49] you and I understand how you feel. And [02:52] the show has always been and always will [02:56] be a love letter to Judaism. That is why [02:59] I made this show. It's because of how [03:02] beautiful of an experience I've had [03:03] becoming Jewish and being a Jewish [03:05] person. And sitting here right now at [03:08] this time in the world where there is [03:10] almost zero positive representation of [03:13] Jewish people, I think it's so important [03:16] to have that. And that is what this show [03:18] is intended to be. [03:21] >> Okay, that that's fine. And listen, I'm [03:23] glad she's pushing back a little bit. [03:24] Push back harder. What he said is not [03:26] just a disagreement around the dinner [03:28] table. Certainly not if you're trying to [03:30] appeal to Jewish fans. What he said is [03:32] quite wrong and actually quite evil [03:33] because it's a lie. It's not true. One [03:35] person in the cast is clearer. Tova [03:37] Felcha, who is an actress who plays Adam [03:39] Brody's mom on the show, says to accuse [03:41] the Jewish people of genocide is wild. [03:43] It's right out of Hitler's playbook. You [03:44] take the victim and you make the victim [03:46] the perpetrator. Good for Tovelcha. [03:49] She says it makes a difference to the [03:50] Jewish community. [03:52] She says, "I believe the perseverance of [03:54] the existence of the state of Israel is [03:55] crucial to the well-being of the [03:56] democratic world and of the free world." [03:59] Good for her. Good for her. The fact [04:01] that in Hollywood, if you're Tova [04:04] Felchin and you say something perfectly [04:05] obvious, there's much more of a career [04:07] risk than if you're Adam Brody and you [04:08] say something totally false, it just [04:10] shows you where Hollywood is [04:11] politically. And the way that you make [04:13] bank in Hollywood is to be Mark Ruffalo. [04:14] The way that you make bank in Hollywood [04:15] is not to be Toba Felcho. [04:18] So, good for her. And I wish the [04:20] creators of the show would stand up a [04:21] little stronger if indeed what they're [04:23] attempting to do is portray Jewishness [04:25] in a positive light. While the Red Green [04:27] Alliance is dominant in certain parts of [04:29] the world, that is particularly true in [04:31] Ireland where it turns out the [04:32] leadership in Ireland is now calling on [04:34] the Irish government to approve student [04:36] visas for gazins. Um this is a ban [04:39] called Hosier that um I may be [04:42] mispronouncing but don't really care. 55 [04:46] students in Gaza who are awaiting for [04:50] their visas to be approved for [04:53] scholarship places that they have earned [04:55] and scholarship places that are waiting [04:57] for them here in Ireland and the [04:58] government has not approved their visa [05:01] applications. [05:02] Um [cheering] [05:06] this QR code if you just want to take a [05:07] photo of it, if you just want to save [05:09] the link, if you want to follow it, that [05:10] is for a petition that is uh to pressure [05:13] the government to expedite uh these visa [05:15] applications. [05:18] This has happened before. It happened [05:19] last year and um this can be solved with [05:22] ministerial discretion. It's an absolute [05:24] uh wonder. It's it's baffling why it [05:26] hasn't been solved yet. [05:28] >> It's a great idea. In fact, I think that [05:30] probably Ireland should open its doors [05:32] to as many Palestinians as want to leave [05:34] a war zone in Gaza. Maybe a million, [05:36] maybe two million. We'll see how Ireland [05:38] likes that. In fact, Ireland could have, [05:42] you know, a two-state solution. I mean, [05:43] another two-state solution in Ireland. [05:45] They could do that. It would be great. I [05:46] think it'll work out beautifully for [05:48] them. Mlemore, who again is the Colin [05:50] Kaepernick of music. Nobody actually [05:52] wants to listen to him sing his songs. [05:53] But he has been able to create a cottage [05:56] industry basically just ripping on [05:58] Israel when he's not wearing [05:59] anti-semitic hook noses and such. There [06:02] is some irony to the fact that he says [06:04] that music has given people a place to [06:05] resist throughout history. There's some [06:07] irony to this given the fact that kamas [06:09] literally slaughtered everyone at a [06:10] music festival which is what kicked off [06:12] the October 7th war. You know [06:15] >> that is why we are here because [06:18] throughout history [06:20] throughout history music has given [06:22] people a place [06:26] >> to resist to come together as a [06:28] collective [06:30] to share our grief to share our stories. [06:34] to move from the heart to mobilize [06:36] people with the frequency of love, the [06:39] heartbeat in our drum that makes us feel [06:42] alive, that makes us feel connected.
