[00:28] >> [music] [00:29] >> From the pulpit of the First Baptist [00:31] Church of Dallas, Texas, this is Pathway [00:34] to Victory with Dr. Robert Jeffress. [00:37] >> Hi, I'm Robert Jeffress, and welcome [00:39] again to Pathway to Victory. With all [00:41] the chaos and unrest [music] in the [00:43] world today, it certainly feels as if [00:46] we're living in the end times. And while [00:48] Christ's return is getting nearer each [00:50] day, the trials facing our world right [00:53] now are [music] nothing compared to [00:55] what's coming during the Great [00:56] Tribulation. Today, we'll see the final [00:59] judgments the earth will endure before [01:01] the last great [music] world conflict. [01:04] My message is titled The Road to [01:07] Armageddon on today's edition of Pathway [01:10] to Victory. [01:17] >> The book of Revelation is filled with [01:19] fantastic imagery and vivid [music] [01:20] depictions that many believers find [01:22] intimidating. But God's word was never [01:24] meant to confuse or discourage you. In [01:27] his best-selling book, Final Conquest, [01:29] [music] Dr. Robert Jeffress walks you [01:31] through Revelation verse by verse, [01:33] explaining its signs and symbols in [01:35] plain terms [music] you can understand. [01:37] Request your copy of Final Conquest when [01:39] you sign up to become a Pathway Partner, [01:42] or when you give a generous gift to [01:44] support the ministry of Pathway to [01:45] Victory. [01:55] >> Last Sunday night, I decided to watch an [01:58] old movie. Perhaps you've seen it. It's [02:01] called Contagion. [02:04] All-star cast, came out in 2011. [02:08] The plot line of the movie is a [02:10] mysterious animal-born [02:13] virus hits China, begins in China, [02:17] and spreads throughout the world at a [02:20] pandemic rate. And the CDC races to [02:24] discover a cure for this virus. Now, if [02:28] you get freaked out easily, don't watch [02:30] the movie. [02:31] I know some of you're going to do it [02:33] just because I said that. But it was [02:35] very realistic. But the part of the [02:37] movie that caught my attention most was [02:40] the depiction of the social unrest [02:43] because of this unknown virus. People [02:46] breaking into other people's homes and [02:49] stealing food. Customers at a pharmacy [02:52] thinking there was a cure there overrun [02:54] the pharmacy counter. Uh [02:57] tremendous social unrest. And as I [03:01] watched that, [03:02] it reminded me of stories I used to hear [03:05] my grandparents tell me when I was a [03:07] little boy about what it was like in [03:10] World War II when our country was facing [03:14] an existential threat. The whole world [03:16] was, the rise of Adolf Hitler. But in [03:18] spite of that threat, the American [03:20] people came together. They bonded [03:23] together. They accepted rationing. They [03:26] put the interest of others above [03:28] themselves. [03:31] I compared that to what I was seeing in [03:34] the movie Sunday night and what I'm [03:36] seeing on television right now. [03:39] People having fistfights at Costco over [03:41] toilet paper. [03:43] And it makes you wonder, do we have the [03:46] same American resolve, strength of [03:49] character that our forefathers had that [03:52] got them through World War II? [03:54] I think there's a serious reason to [03:56] question that. [03:58] And then fast forward to the final 7 [04:01] years of Earth's history, the Great [04:03] Tribulation. How is the world going to [04:05] respond to epidemics [04:08] even more severe than what we're seeing [04:11] right now? [04:12] And then imagine what that response is [04:15] going to be like when all the Christians [04:17] have been removed already. [04:19] How will people react? It's going to be [04:22] an unprecedented time of anarchy and [04:25] chaos in the world. And we get a good [04:27] picture of that in the passage we're [04:29] going to look at today. If you have your [04:32] Bibles, I want you to turn to Revelation [04:34] 16 as we continue our study in this last [04:37] book of the Bible with a message titled [04:40] The Road to Armageddon. Literally, today [04:44] we're going to see the road that leads [04:47] to the final great world conflict, [04:49] Armageddon. Now, for the many of you who [04:52] have just joined us today, we are in a [04:54] year-long study of the last book of the [04:57] Bible, the Revelation, that describes [04:59] the details that will lead up to the [05:01] visible, literal return of Jesus Christ [05:04] to set up his kingdom on the earth. And [05:07] ladies and gentlemen, if you're watching [05:08] today, you need to know that our hope is [05:11] that Christ is coming back again. This [05:15] world that we're living in right now is [05:17] not the world that God originally [05:20] created or intended. Man's rebellion [05:23] against God brought the [05:26] disorder we see in the universe today. [05:29] But this world will not be that way [05:31] forever. One day Jesus Christ is coming [05:34] back to reclaim those people who belong [05:38] to him and to recreate this world in a [05:40] world that is free of sin and sickness [05:44] and disease and every malady we face [05:47] today. That's the theme of the book of [05:50] the Revelation. Now, in chapter 6 [05:52] through 19, uh the author describes that [05:56] final 7-year [05:58] um [05:58] period of time, the Great Tribulation, [06:01] that will result in the Battle of [06:03] Armageddon and the return of Jesus [06:05] Christ. And you remember that God pours [06:08] out his judgment on the earth during [06:09] these last 7 years in a series of three [06:12] judgments. The seal judgments, [06:15] Revelation chapter 6. The trumpet [06:17] judgments, Revelation 8 through 9. And [06:20] then, [06:21] for several chapters, there's an [06:23] interlude. And when we come to chapter [06:25] 16, the final judgments, God's final [06:29] judgments on the earth, we call those, [06:31] and John calls them, the bowl judgments. [06:35] I want you to notice, first of all, the [06:36] order to pour out the bowl judgments in [06:39] verse 1 of chapter 16. Then I heard a [06:42] loud voice from the temple in heaven [06:44] saying to the seven angels, "Go and pour [06:48] out on the earth the seven bowls of the [06:52] wrath of God." There are people who say, [06:55] "Oh, I don't believe in a God of wrath." [06:58] This text here says that God is angry. [07:00] The anger [07:02] the fierce anger of God is literally [07:04] what it means. I don't believe in a God [07:07] of wrath, I believe in a God of love. [07:10] Well, if that's what you believe in, you [07:12] believe in a God of your own [07:14] imagination, not the God of the Bible. [07:16] Make no mistake about it, God is love. [07:19] He loves you and me so much, he sent his [07:22] only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to pay [07:25] the penalty of our sin. But God is also [07:28] a God of justice. He cannot allow sin to [07:31] go unpunished, the Bible says. And this [07:34] pouring out of his judgment is a display [07:37] of God's justice, his holiness. Now, [07:40] before we look at each of these seven [07:42] bowls, that word literally means saucer, [07:45] a pan, a shallow pan. Before we look at [07:48] each of these seven, let me make three [07:51] general observations about these final [07:53] judgments. First of all, the bowl [07:55] judgments follow each other in rapid [07:58] succession. Now, in your English text, [08:02] it will say in chapter 16, "And the [08:04] first angel, and the second angel, and [08:07] the third angel, and so forth." But, the [08:09] word angel is not in the original text. [08:12] Instead, it's simply That was inserted [08:15] by a translator somewhere later on. In [08:18] the Greek text, it simply says, "The [08:20] first, the second, the third, the [08:22] fourth, the fifth." The idea is rapidity [08:25] here of judgments, not like the trumpet [08:28] judgments that spanned out over months [08:30] of time. Secondly, the bowl judgments [08:33] are similar to the trumpet judgments. As [08:36] we go through these, you're going to [08:38] to quote uh [08:40] Yogi Bear, I feel like you're in déjà vu [08:42] all over again. [08:44] Uh these sound familiar to us. It's [08:47] because they are similar to the ones [08:49] that were named in chapters 8 and 9, the [08:53] trumpet judgments, with one major [08:55] difference. And that's observation [08:57] number three. The bowl judgments are [09:00] unique in their severity. [09:03] As we may remember, the trumpet [09:06] judgments, many times it said, "And a [09:07] third of the earth was [09:10] uh [09:11] affected. A third of the rivers were [09:13] destroyed. A third of the sea marine [09:15] life in the sea was destroyed." But, [09:17] these judgments are over the whole [09:20] earth. [09:21] Before we go any further in today's [09:23] message, I just want to take a quick [09:25] moment to thank you for streaming [09:27] Pathway to Victory on YouTube. [10:06] Thank you for being here with us today [10:08] on YouTube. Now, let's get back to [10:11] today's message. [10:13] Now, having given that overview, let's [10:17] look at the execution of those bowls as [10:20] they're actually poured out. One thing [10:23] you'll note over and over again, [10:25] these judgments are against [10:28] non-Christians on the earth. Those who [10:32] took the mark of the beast. They chose [10:35] not to follow Christ. They took the mark [10:37] of the beast to be able to buy and sell [10:39] food and to provide for their families. [10:43] But, these are specifically targeted. [10:46] You'll find the text saying, "To those [10:49] who took the mark of the beast." Now, I [10:51] know what you're thinking. You think, [10:52] "Well, wait a minute. [10:54] Are you saying there going to be [10:55] Christians who are living during the [10:56] tribulation?" Oh, yes, they are. Well, [10:59] what about the rapture? Remember, at the [11:01] rapture, which could happen by the way, [11:04] in the middle of this service. It looks [11:06] like it's already taken place. But, uh [11:10] you know, the rapture could happen at [11:12] any time. It's when all Christians will [11:14] be removed from the earth. And then [11:16] comes the great tribulation. But, [11:18] remember, at the beginning of the [11:19] tribulation, 144,000 [11:22] Jewish evangelists, Revelation [11:25] 7 says, are going to be [11:27] sealed and saved as God's missionaries. [11:31] They're going to be sent throughout the [11:33] world to preach the gospel. And there [11:36] will be people who will become [11:37] Christians during the tribulation time. [11:40] They will pay a steep price to do so. [11:42] Many of them will be martyred to do so. [11:45] But there will be people who become [11:48] Christians during the tribulation. They [11:51] will be spared these judgments. God will [11:54] make sure they do not experience His [11:56] wrath. The reason is when you trust in [11:59] Christ as your savior, you forever are [12:02] freed from having to experience God's [12:05] punishment. Romans 8:1 says, "There is [12:07] now no condemnation awaiting those who [12:10] belong to Christ Jesus." You are exempt [12:14] from God's judgments. You're not exempt [12:16] from problems, but you are exempt from [12:19] God's judgment. And so these bold [12:22] judgments are specifically against [12:24] unbelievers. Now let's look at them. The [12:27] first bold judgment was skin boils. Look [12:30] at verse two. So the first angel went [12:33] and poured out his bowl on the earth, [12:35] and it became a loathsome and malignant [12:38] sore on the people who had the mark of [12:41] the beast and who worshipped his image. [12:44] Many commentators note that that word [12:46] boil is the Greek word helkos. It is a [12:49] word It's a Greek word that was used in [12:52] the Septuagint, the Greek translation of [12:54] the Old Testament, to describe the boils [12:57] that God placed on the Egyptians. It's [13:00] the same word [13:01] that is used to describe the boils that [13:04] Job experienced. Remember when he went [13:06] through that test of his faith and God [13:08] allowed Satan permission to strike Job, [13:11] Job had boils. [13:14] That's a kind of hard to take before [13:15] lunch, but let me describe what those [13:17] boils actually were. One writer says, [13:21] "The skin, the sores ooze with pus. [13:26] They turn darker in color. They attract [13:29] worms before becoming crusty and hard. [13:33] Remember Job? He had those oozing wounds [13:36] and they became hard and he was itching [13:39] and he had to take probably a broken [13:41] piece of pottery in order to scrape [13:43] himself to get temporary relief. That's [13:46] the kind of boils that will come in [13:48] these last times. Now, we don't know in [13:51] what form they come. Perhaps it is some [13:54] type of pandemic skin disease. Perhaps [13:57] because of all of the warfare taking [13:59] place, this is the result of chemical [14:01] warfare. But whatever the reason is, [14:04] these are horrendous afflictions that [14:06] people will endure. Secondly, the second [14:09] bowl, the destruction of sea life. Now [14:12] again, remember the second trumpet [14:14] judgment killed a third of the sea. But [14:17] notice in verse 3, the second angel [14:19] poured out his bowl into the sea and it [14:22] became blood. [14:24] Like that of a dead man and every living [14:27] thing in the sea died. [14:30] Just imagine what it would do to our [14:32] ecosystem to have every fish, every [14:35] mammal, the coral reefs, everything [14:38] destroyed. Just imagine having those [14:41] billions of fish [14:43] on the surface of the water [14:46] under the hot scorching sun. Just the [14:49] stench that would come up from the [14:51] oceans. That's what John saw here when [14:54] every living thing in the sea had died. [14:58] The third bowl was the pollution of [15:01] fresh water. This was on the sea, the [15:03] second bowl. This is on fresh water. [15:06] Remember again the third trumpet [15:08] judgment destroyed a third of the fresh [15:11] water supplies, the rivers and streams. [15:14] But this is much more severe. Again, we [15:16] find it in verses 4 to 7. Then the third [15:19] angel poured out his bowl into the [15:22] rivers and the springs of water and they [15:26] became blood. [15:29] Can you imagine what it would be like to [15:31] have no fresh water available? [15:34] What it would do to our world? [15:37] You know, we're told that man can live [15:39] 30 or 40 days without food, but you can [15:42] only go a couple of days, 3 days without [15:46] water. [15:48] This is one reason we know at this point [15:50] we are very close to the return of Jesus [15:53] Christ because Jesus himself said, "Were [15:56] the days of the tribulation not cut [15:58] short, nobody would have survived." [16:01] All of the fresh water supply is going [16:03] to be destroyed. Verse 5, John says, [16:07] "And I heard the angel of the waters." [16:10] What in the world is that? Well, [16:12] apparently, you know, God has angels for [16:14] everything. There's an angel in [16:17] in charge of the water supply in the [16:18] world. He's the minister of water for [16:21] the world. He's over the river supplies [16:24] and the seas of the world. And this [16:27] minister of water, the angel, says, [16:30] "Righteous are you, God, who are and who [16:34] were, oh holy one, because you judged [16:36] these things. For they, that is the [16:39] unbelievers, poured out the blood of [16:41] saints and prophets and you in turn have [16:44] given them blood to drink. They deserve [16:48] it. [16:49] They deserve it." [16:50] That's what the angel is saying. God, [16:52] you're right to do that. They got what [16:54] they deserved. They spilled the blood of [16:57] your people. [16:59] They in turn are being forced to drink [17:01] blood. [17:03] You know, those of you who have been to [17:05] law school may remember the phrase lex [17:07] talionis. It's a Latin phrase. It means [17:10] retribution. [17:12] The law of retribution. [17:15] There has to be punishments suitable to [17:17] fit the crime. [17:19] It's the principle in the Old Testament [17:21] an eye for an eye and a truth for a [17:25] truth [17:26] a tooth for a tooth. That is justice an [17:28] eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. [17:32] And what the angel is saying is God you [17:34] have given these people exactly what [17:37] they deserve. God has an ability to do [17:40] that. The late pastor Warren Wiersbe [17:43] said it this way. Pharaoh tried to drown [17:46] the Jewish boy babies but it was his own [17:50] army that eventually drowned in the Red [17:52] Sea. Haman [17:55] in the Old Testament planned to hang [17:56] Mordecai on the gallows and to [17:58] exterminate the Jews but he himself was [18:01] hanged on the gallows and his family was [18:04] exterminated. [18:06] King Saul refused to obey God and slay [18:08] the Amalekites so in turn he was slain [18:12] by an Amalekite. [18:14] That's the principle here. An eye for an [18:17] eye, a tooth for a tooth. I imagine some [18:20] of you are thinking wait a minute wait a [18:21] minute didn't Jesus say you know that's [18:24] what Moses said but Jesus says love your [18:28] enemies turn the other cheek. [18:31] Why can't God just let it go get over [18:33] it. [18:34] Why does God get to [18:37] apply the law an eye for an eye and a [18:39] tooth for a tooth and I don't get to do [18:40] that. [18:41] Because God alone is holy as we heard [18:44] today. [18:45] Only God is able to perfectly design a [18:50] punishment that perfectly fits the [18:52] crime. [18:54] You and I are unable to do that. Only [18:56] God can do that. And so the angel says [19:00] you are righteous to do that very thing. [19:03] And then notice also what he says in [19:05] verse seven and I heard the altar saying [19:09] yes oh Lord God the almighty true and [19:12] righteous are your judgments. What does [19:14] he mean he heard the altar say? Remember [19:16] the Revelation talks about those under [19:19] the altar in heaven. They're the [19:20] tribulation saints. They are the ones [19:23] whose blood was spilled by the [19:25] worshipers of the Antichrist. And when [19:28] they see these people being made to [19:31] drink blood, being punished for what [19:34] they had done to the martyrs, the [19:35] martyrs cry out, [19:38] I don't know how else to translate it. [19:40] Go God. [19:41] You go God. Give them what they deserve. [19:44] They deserve that punishment. Now, [19:47] again, we say, "Well, wait a minute. [19:49] Shouldn't they forgive those who had [19:51] killed them instead of desiring God's [19:55] punishment against them?" [19:57] No, they're doing exactly what's right. [20:00] You see, one of the most basic [20:02] misconceptions people have about [20:04] forgiveness is this. [20:07] They think that when you forgive [20:09] somebody, you just automatically give up [20:12] your desire to see them treated justly. [20:15] No. [20:16] When you forgive somebody who has [20:18] wronged you, forgiveness is giving up [20:20] your right [20:22] to vengeance. Vengeance is hurting [20:24] somebody else for hurting me. [20:27] When you forgive somebody, you give up [20:29] your right to vengeance, but you don't [20:32] give up your desire for justice. [20:35] Justice is the punishment God or other [20:37] people may require from those who wrong [20:40] you. [20:42] If you're a parent, your child is [20:43] murdered. [20:45] Yes, you're to forgive that murderer. [20:47] You give up your right to hurt them for [20:50] hurting you, but you don't give up your [20:52] right to justice. [20:55] You want the law enforcement officials [20:58] as God's instruments to execute justice [21:01] on those who have wronged you and your [21:03] children. [21:05] When you forgive somebody, [21:07] you say, "God, I'm not going to [21:09] be the one to hurt them. I'm going to [21:12] let you settle the score instead." [21:16] You know, we have made forgiveness so [21:17] hard for people because we're [21:20] falsely telling them that if they [21:21] forgive somebody, they'll give up their [21:23] right for justice. No, you can't give up [21:26] your desire for justice. You are made in [21:28] the image of God. God is a god of [21:31] justice, and he made us to want justice [21:34] as well. And that's why these [21:35] tribulation saints are rejoicing when [21:38] God executes his judgment. Now, look at [21:42] the fourth bowl, will you? The fourth [21:44] trumpet judgment, you remember, [21:46] decreased sunlight for 8 hours a day. [21:49] This [21:51] uh bowl This uh bowl judgment is going [21:53] to increase the intensity of the sun. [21:55] Look at verses 8 and 9. The fourth angel [21:58] poured out his bowl upon the sun, and it [22:01] was given to it to scorch men with fire. [22:05] And men were scorched with fierce heat. [22:10] We don't know how this intensity [22:13] uh occurred in the sun's rays upon the [22:15] earth. Does God alter the [22:18] tilt of the earth's axis? Uh [22:21] does he alter the orbit around the sun? [22:25] We don't know what happens. Could it be [22:27] that he destroys the ozone that blocks [22:31] out many UVA and UVB uh [22:34] rays? Uh and the people feel the full [22:38] brunt of the sun's heat? He doesn't [22:40] answer that question, but he does say [22:42] people will be inflicted with terrible [22:45] sores. You can imagine uh skin cancer [22:48] that's incurable. You can imagine the um [22:53] the uh [22:54] blindness that would occur of seeing the [22:57] sun full strength. All kind of [23:00] afflictions are going to occur during [23:02] this time. They were scorched with [23:04] fierce heat. [23:07] Now, what do you think they would do [23:08] after this? After having these boils, [23:12] the oozing of pus, [23:15] having these scorching [23:17] rays of the sun, thirsting to death for [23:21] water, wouldn't you think that would be [23:23] a good time to repent? Don't you think [23:26] that would be a good time to say, "God, [23:28] whatever we've done, we ask for your [23:31] mercy." No, they don't repent. Instead, [23:34] notice their response, they blasphemed [23:38] the name of God, who has the power over [23:41] these plagues, and they did not repent [23:45] so as to give God the glory. [23:48] That is the heart of the unbeliever. He [23:51] can no longer feel the conviction of [23:54] God, and he refuses to repent. It [23:57] reminds me of something I read this week [23:59] about a martial arts technique called [24:02] the iron palm. The iron palm, it says [24:06] people in martial arts know that before [24:09] they engage in competition, one way to [24:12] ensure victory is to take their open [24:14] palm and strike it against a hard, blunt [24:19] object. And if they do that, it develops [24:22] calluses on their hand so that their [24:25] opponent will feel their blow even more [24:28] strongly. [24:29] And so they do that repeatedly in [24:32] training. They strike that [music] blunt [24:34] object. The only problem with that [24:37] technique is they so destroy their own [24:40] nerve endings, they can't feel anything [24:42] either any longer. Their hand becomes [24:45] useless to them. [24:52] These seven bold judgments are the full [24:54] expression [music] of God's wrath [24:56] against a world that refuses to repent. [24:59] And here at Pathway [music] to Victory, [25:00] our mission is to reach as many people [25:03] as possible with the hope of the gospel [25:05] so that more will be saved. This year [25:08] marks 30 years of ministry [music] for [25:11] Pathway to Victory. 30 years of [25:13] proclaiming God's word plainly, [25:15] practically, [music] [25:16] and without apology. [25:18] Through every trend and cultural shift, [25:21] the broadcast [music] has continued [25:23] because it's built on the one thing that [25:24] never changes, [25:26] >> [music] [25:26] >> God's word. God has chosen to use your [25:29] partnership to carry that [music] truth [25:31] even further. So, thank you for standing [25:34] with us for the many years still ahead. [25:37] Stay right there. I'll be back with more [25:39] [music] Pathway to Victory in just a [25:41] moment. [25:42] >> Our world is growing darker by the day. [25:45] But the book of Revelation teaches that [25:46] one day soon the darkness will pass. And [25:49] our long-awaited King of Kings and Lord [25:51] of Lords will return and make his final [25:54] conquest. [25:55] >> The book of Revelation isn't just the [25:57] unveiling [music] of future events. It's [26:00] the unveiling of a person, Jesus Christ. [26:03] [music] And in Final Conquest, my [26:05] exclusive commentary on Revelation, [26:08] you'll discover the great hope we have [26:11] in the [music] triumphant return of our [26:13] Lord Jesus Christ. [26:15] >> Request your copy of Final Conquest when [26:18] you give a generous gift to support the [26:19] ministry of Pathway to Victory. [26:22] Or when you become a Pathway Partner. [26:44] >> And these line up exactly with the seven [26:47] seal judgments [music] we see in [26:49] Revelation chapter six. [26:52] >> In light of current events [music] and [26:53] with the return of Christ so clearly on [26:55] the horizon, sharing the gospel through [26:58] Pathway to Victory has never been more [27:00] important or more urgent. So, thank you [27:02] for supporting Pathway to Victory as [27:04] together we pierce the darkness of our [27:06] day with the light of God's word. [27:12] >> First the seals, then the trumpets, and [27:14] finally the bold judgments. Those who [27:17] live through the great tribulation will [27:19] witness horror and destruction like [27:21] [music] the world has never witnessed. [27:24] And next time we'll look at the last of [27:26] the bold judgments poured out [music] on [27:28] the earth before Christ returned. It's [27:30] the final stop on the road to [27:33] Armageddon. Stay tuned for a preview of [27:35] what's coming up next in [music] our [27:36] series, Final Conquest. [27:40] Thank you can approach God in your own [27:42] righteousness, your goodness, [27:45] you're going to be embarrassed [music] [27:46] when Christ returns. [27:48] Remember the Bible says your [27:49] righteousness, [music] the best you can [27:51] do, is like a filthy rag before God. [27:54] Isaiah 64:6. [27:56] No, the only way you want to meet God [27:58] [music] one day [27:59] is dressed in the righteousness of his [28:02] son, Jesus Christ. [28:04] >> Set your DVR and join us next time for [28:06] part two of the message, The Road to [28:08] Armageddon, here on Pathway to Victory.
