Transcript [00:00] Why is Judaism obsessed with how girls [00:01] dress? [00:04] >> The truth is Judaism is not only [00:05] obsessed with how girls dress. I don't [00:07] walk around with my top off either. [00:08] There's this idea called tzniut, [00:10] modesty, and yes, it's spoken more about [00:13] girls just because in general girls who [00:16] aren't [00:17] spiritually or religiously connected do [00:20] walk around a little bit more [00:22] exposed. But Judaism is not only about [00:24] girls, it's about men. I don't walk [00:26] around half naked either. And the reason [00:28] is really because Judaism says you're a [00:30] soul not a body. So the more you show of [00:33] your body and present yourself as body [00:35] and get recognition as body and feel [00:38] good about yourself for body, the more [00:40] you connect to body and the less you're [00:43] actually manifesting your spirituality [00:45] into the world. So Judaism doesn't say [00:47] that you're not allowed to look good. [00:49] You can be dressed very modestly and [00:50] still very self-expressed. [00:52] My daughter actually once said to me, [00:54] you know, may it gets very hot in the [00:56] summer. So So, you know, that's I [00:59] understand why people want to wear fewer [01:01] clothes, but the truth is wearing a [01:03] bikini doesn't help when you're very [01:05] hot. The sun's now directly on your [01:07] skin. In fact, I lived in India for a [01:08] very long time, the hottest place on the [01:11] face of the planet, and the women wear [01:13] long, thin cotton sleeve, very tzniua, [01:16] they're very modest. So So it's not a [01:19] heat thing. It's really a spiritual [01:21] thing where I can still express myself [01:22] through my clothing, but I don't The [01:24] more I show of my body, the less I'm [01:27] really revealing the pnimius, the inner [01:30] my soul, what's really there. So there's [01:31] a There's a certain beauty to someone [01:33] who's dressed modestly. Once again, men [01:35] as well. [01:36] Men as well. We We dress modestly [01:38] because we want to say, you know, my [01:40] body isn't who I am. [01:42] It's also a practical thing by the way [01:43] because by the time you're 60, 70, 80, [01:46] your body's going to look awful. So if [01:48] you've got all of your sense of self on [01:51] recognition from your body, you're going [01:52] to end up as one of those late [01:54] 80-year-old women with so much like [01:55] plastic surgery, you got all this weird [01:57] makeup, those types. So, the more you [02:00] identify as a body, the more getting old [02:03] is difficult, and the more dying is [02:04] difficult because you really have to let [02:06] go of your identity. So, you really we [02:08] want this balance to have beauty, but an [02:10] expression of inner beauty that that [02:12] comes from maybe covering yourself up.
