Transcript [09:35] Welcome everyone. [09:44] Good. [09:52] We'll begin with uh Psalm 51. [09:59] Be gracious to me, oh God, according to [10:02] thy loving kindness. [10:05] according to the greatness of thy [10:06] compassion, blot out my transgressions. [10:10] Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and [10:13] cleanse me from my sin. For I know my [10:16] transgressions, and my sin is ever [10:19] before me. Against thee, thee only. I [10:23] have sinned, and done what is evil in [10:24] thy sight, so that thou art justified [10:29] when thou dost speak, and blameless when [10:30] thou dost judge. [10:33] Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, [10:35] and in sin my mother conceived me. [10:38] Behold, thou dost desire truth. In the [10:42] innermost being, and in the hidden part, [10:45] thou wilt make me know wisdom. [10:49] Purify me with hissip, and I shall be [10:51] clean. Wash me, and I shall be whiter [10:54] than snow. [10:57] Make me to hear joy and gladness. Let [11:00] the bones which thou has broken rejoice. [11:04] Hide thy face. [11:05] >> Wh [11:07] lost your mic. [11:10] >> Hide thy face from my sins and blot out [11:12] all my iniquities. Create in me a clean [11:15] heart, oh God, and renew a steadfast [11:18] spirit within me. Do not cast me away [11:21] from thy presence. Do not take thy holy [11:24] spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of [11:28] thy salvation and sustain me with a [11:32] willing spirit. Then I will teach [11:34] transgressors thy ways and sinners will [11:37] be converted to thee. [11:40] Deliver me from blood guiltiness, oh [11:42] God, thou God of my salvation. Then my [11:46] tongue will joyfully sing of thy [11:48] righteousness. [11:50] Oh Lord, oh Lord, open my lips that my [11:52] mouth may declare thy praise. For thou [11:55] dost not delight in sacrifice. [11:57] >> Speak into the podium. Mike, you've lost [11:59] your battery, I think. [12:13] For us not delight in sacrifice, [12:16] otherwise I would give it. Thou art not [12:19] pleased with burnt offering. The [12:21] sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a [12:24] broken and a contrite heart. Oh God, [12:28] thou wilt not despise. [12:30] By thy favor do good to Zion. Build the [12:33] walls of Jerusalem. [12:36] Then thou wilt delight in righteous [12:38] sacrifices, in burnt offering and whole [12:42] burnt offering. Then young bulls will be [12:45] offered on thine altar. [12:49] And as we begin this day, [12:52] let's sing this psalm together, knowing [12:56] that this is a day for repentance, but [12:59] it's also a day of joy. It's a day of [13:02] joy of knowing that we can turn before [13:05] the Lord our God. That he empowers us by [13:08] us by his rules to make any changes we [13:13] we would be better off making. and that [13:16] he's given us Messiah Yeshua as our [13:19] atoning sacrifice. [13:35] Have mercy on me, [13:38] oh God, [13:41] according to your unfailing love, [13:48] according to your great compassion. [13:54] Blood out my transgression. [14:00] Wash away all my iniquities [14:05] and cleanse me from all my sins. [14:15] For I know my transgression [14:20] and my sin is always before me. [14:27] against you only have I sinned [14:33] and done what is evil in your sight. [14:38] So that you are proved right when you [14:42] speak [14:45] and justified when you judge. [14:52] Surely I was sinful at birth. [14:59] Surely I was sinful at birth. [15:08] Surely you desire truth. [15:14] Truth in the inward [15:17] parts. [15:20] And you teach me wisdom. [15:25] Wisdom in the innermost place. [15:31] With his son make me clean. [15:36] Wash me white [15:40] snow. [15:45] Oh, let me hear joy and gladness. [15:50] Let the bones you have crushed rejoice [15:57] and hide thy face from my sins [16:02] and blot out all my iniquities. [16:10] created [16:12] me a clean heart. [16:18] Oh God, [16:22] renew a steadfast [16:25] spirit [16:26] within me. [16:32] Create in me a clean heart. [16:40] Oh God, [16:43] and and renew a right spirit within me. [16:54] Cast me not away [16:58] from your presence, [17:01] oh Lord, [17:04] and take not your holy spirit from me. [17:14] And restore [17:16] unto me [17:19] the joy of your salvation. [17:24] And grant me a willing spirit [17:28] to sustain me. [17:36] Yes. A willing spirit that all the [17:38] transformation, [17:40] all the repentance would be sustained. [17:43] Oh Lord, [17:45] then I will teach transgressors your [17:49] ways and sinners will turn back to you. [17:55] Save me from the guilt upon me, Lord, [18:00] who saves me. [18:04] and my tongue will sing of your [18:08] righteousness. [18:10] Oh Lord, the God who saves me. Open up [18:15] my lips and I will declare [18:20] your praise, [18:23] oh Lord. [18:38] You do not delight in sacrifices [18:43] for surely I would bring it. [18:48] You do not take pleasure in offerings, [18:53] oh Lord, [18:57] but the sacrifices [19:00] of God are a broken spirit and a [19:05] contrite heart. [19:07] And the Lord will never despise a broken [19:13] spirit and a contrite heart. [19:17] Yes. The sacrificees [19:20] of God for a broken spirit and a [19:24] contrite heart. [19:27] And the Lord will never despise a broken [19:33] spirit and a contrite heart. [19:40] In your good pleasure, O Lord, make Zion [19:43] prosper. [19:45] Build up the walls [19:47] of Jerusalem. [19:50] Then there will be righteous sacrifices [19:53] and whole burnt offerings to delight you [19:55] and bowls will be offered at your altar. [52:00] You know that last part that we pray [52:02] about rebuilding the temple speedily in [52:05] our days, that's kind of a controversial [52:08] thing because there are people thinking [52:09] we're going to build a literal temple [52:11] right now, which may or may not happen. [52:14] But we especially who are believers in [52:17] Messiah Yeshua know that he has rebuilt [52:21] and he is rebuilding a temple because we [52:24] are the temple of the Lord God and he is [52:29] rebuilding it speedily in our days. May [52:33] he continue to do so. [52:36] We turn to page seven. Um you have an [52:39] extra handout this year which we're not [52:41] going to read through right now. It's [52:43] just for reflection. You can use it. I [52:46] encourage you to read it before we have [52:48] our open time of prayer in the afternoon [52:51] starting with the prayer for us [52:53] individually. Um because it brings out [52:57] scriptures from the New Testament, the [52:59] apostolic writings that go with each [53:03] parts of this confession that we make [53:06] together. And uh as people were saying [53:09] last night, um there's always a bit of a [53:11] sigh of relief when we read a sin that [53:14] we haven't committed. It's like, "Oh, [53:16] thank you. We're just corporately [53:17] praying for repentance on that one on [53:20] behalf of everyone else." But um we [53:22] invite you to enter into this and we um [53:27] we take our fist and we just lightly [53:29] strike our chest not as an act of [53:32] violence but um kind of a a physical [53:36] reminder that we want to bring this to [53:37] our hearts and this is coming into our [53:40] hearts and from our hearts to the Lord. [53:44] Our God and God of our fathers, let our [53:46] prayer come before you and do not ignore [53:49] our supplication. For we are not so [53:52] brazenfaced and stiff necked to say to [53:55] you, Adonai, our God and God of our [53:57] fathers, we are righteous and have not [54:00] sinned. But indeed, we and all our [54:05] fathers have sinned. and we'll just be [54:07] chanting the um [54:11] the verses. The English is [54:14] there with you. If you join me standing [54:17] if you feel able [54:44] da [54:45] He knew we shall [55:06] new [55:11] lots New Maru [55:18] Au [55:23] Kishino or [55:34] Rashe. [55:47] And now we move to the alet [55:51] in English [55:53] which is just another um confession but [55:57] also with the recognition that God [56:00] forgives us as we confess our sins. [56:03] That's what he says, right? If we [56:05] confess our sins, he's faithful and just [56:07] to forgive them. [56:13] Bottom of page seven, [56:22] never make the mistake of unstapling [56:24] your pages [56:27] because one of them will be missing. [56:34] We can use one if you need. [56:46] >> Oh Lord our God and God of our [56:48] ancestors, forgive all our sins, pardon [56:51] all our iniquities, and grant us [56:53] atonement for all our transgressions. [56:56] And on page eight, we say, "For the sin [56:59] which we have committed in your sight [57:01] through arrogance, and for the sin which [57:04] we have committed before you by breaking [57:06] promises, for the sin which we have [57:09] committed in your sight by casting off [57:11] responsibility, [57:13] and for the sin which we have committed [57:15] before you by denying and lying. For the [57:18] sin which we have committed in your [57:20] sight by evil thoughts. And for the sin [57:23] which we have committed before you [57:25] through fraud and falsehood. For the sin [57:28] which we have committed in your sight [57:30] through gossip. And for the sin which we [57:33] have committed before you by hatred. [57:53] For all of these, oh God of forgiveness, [57:55] forgive us, pardon us, grant us [57:57] atonement. [57:59] >> For the sin which we have committed in [58:01] your sight by being insincere in [58:03] relationships, and for the sin which we [58:06] have committed before you through lack [58:07] of justice. For the sin which we have [58:10] committed in your sight, either [58:12] knowingly or unknowingly. And for the [58:15] sin which we've committed before you [58:17] through lustful behavior. For the sin [58:20] which we have committed in your sight [58:22] through meditation of the heart that was [58:24] sinful. And for the sin which we have [58:27] committed before you by not honoring [58:29] your name. For the sin which we have [58:32] committed in your sight openly or [58:34] secretly. And for the sin which we have [58:37] committed before you by being [58:39] presumptuous. [58:41] For the sin which we have committed in [58:43] your sight by being quick to spread [58:45] rumors and for the sin which we have [58:48] committed before you by resisting [58:50] parents or teachers. And we'll remind us [58:54] as each one of these maybe strikes a [58:56] chord in our heart that [59:15] >> for all of these. Oh God of forgiveness, [59:18] forgive us, pardon us, grant us [59:20] atonement. and we know he will. For the [59:24] sin which we have committed in your [59:26] sight by scoffing and ridiculing others [59:29] and for the sin which we have committed [59:31] before you by talking idly. For the sin [59:35] which we have committed in your sight by [59:37] unchastity. [59:38] And for the sin which we have committed [59:40] before you through violence. We're on [59:43] page nine. [59:48] For the sin which we have committed in [59:50] your sight by wronging our neighbor, and [59:53] for the sin which we have committed [59:55] before you through excess in eating and [59:58] drinking. For the sin which we have [60:00] committed in your sight by yet being [60:02] proud. And for the sin which we've [60:05] committed before you through our lack of [60:07] zeal. [60:26] For all of these, oh God of forgiveness, [60:28] forgive us, pardon us, grant us [60:31] atonement. [60:32] Forgive us for all these sins. For we [60:35] read of our Messiah. [60:37] He was wounded for our transgressions. [60:40] He was bruised for our iniquities and [60:42] the chastisement of our sins was on him [60:46] and with his stripes we are healed. All [60:49] we like sheep have gone astray. We have [60:52] turned everyone to his own way and the [60:55] Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us [60:58] all. In the past God provided atonement [61:02] for us through the sacrifice system. So [61:04] we read, "Then he shall kill the goat of [61:08] the sin offering that is for the people [61:10] and bring his blood within the veil and [61:13] do with that blood as he did with the [61:15] blood of the bull and sprinkle it upon [61:17] the mercy seat and before the mercy seat [61:20] and he shall make an atonement because [61:22] of their transgressions with respect to [61:24] all their sins." The Lord spoke to Moses [61:27] and said, "I have given you the blood on [61:29] the altar as an atonement for you [61:31] because it is the blood by the reason by [61:35] reason of the life offered up that makes [61:37] atonement." Now he provides that [61:39] atonement through Yeshua, our Messiah, [61:42] as he explains to us. The blood of bulls [61:45] and goats and the ashes of a hepher [61:47] sprinkled on the unclean sanctified them [61:50] so that they were ceremonially clean. [61:53] How much more will the blood of Messiah [61:56] who through the eternal Ruah Hashem [61:58] offered himself unspotted to God cleanse [62:02] your consciences from worthless deeds [62:05] that we may serve the living God. [62:08] But when this priest had offered one [62:11] sacrifice for sins for all time, he sat [62:13] down at the right hand of God. For by [62:16] one sacrifice he has perfected forever [62:20] those who are being made holy. Amen. Um, [62:24] Noah and Jerusa and whoever would like [62:26] to come up with you, would you like to [62:28] open the ark for Ainu Menu on top of [62:30] page 10? [62:34] And reminder, we don't have any of the [62:36] children's things in the sanctuary, but [62:38] you can help yourself to sheets in the [62:39] back and bring them up. Clipboards are [62:42] there. [63:05] And we join together in this. [63:15] A [63:21] new [63:53] I say I [64:01] said [64:04] Iman [64:08] said [64:14] And we continue with the 13 attributes. [64:39] All of [64:53] you may close the ark. [65:04] the whole crew. [65:13] And now we're going to move on to um the [65:16] readings. We did not put out the [65:18] citarim. So um you know the blessings [65:21] mostly by heart and uh so just join in [65:25] your heart as you hear the blessings. [65:28] Who has the first uh reading? [65:30] >> Great. [65:59] Ow, you pull my hair. [66:12] for [66:34] the first Torah reading is from [66:36] Leviticus [66:38] 16:es 1-34 [66:47] Then Adonai spoke to Moses after the [66:50] death of the two sons of Aaron when they [66:52] approached the presence of Adonai and [66:54] died. Adonai said to Moses, "Tell Aaron [66:58] your brother not to come at just any [67:01] time into the holiest place behind the [67:03] curtain before the atonement cover which [67:06] is on the ark, so that he would not die. [67:09] For I will be appearing in the cloud [67:11] over the atonement cover." [67:14] In this way shall Aaron come into the [67:16] sanctuary with a young bull for a sin [67:19] offering and a ram for a burnt offering. [67:22] He is to put it on the holy linen [67:24] garment, have the linen undergarments on [67:27] his body, put on the linen sash, and [67:29] wear the linen turban. They are the holy [67:32] garments. He shall bathe his body in [67:35] water and put them on. [67:37] Then he is to take from the congregation [67:39] of Ben Israel two he goats for a sin [67:42] offering and one ram for a burnt [67:45] offering. Then Aaron is to offer the [67:48] bowl for the sin offering which is for [67:50] himself and make atonement for himself [67:52] and his house. Then he is to take the [67:55] two goats and present them before Adonai [67:58] at the entrance of the tent of meeting. [68:00] Aaron will then cast lots for the two [68:03] goats, one lot for Adonai and the other [68:06] lot for the scapegoat. Aaron is to [68:09] present the goat on which the lot for [68:11] Adonai fell and make it a sin offering. [68:14] But the goat upon which the lot of the [68:16] scapegoat fell is to be presented alive [68:18] before Adonai to make atonement upon it [68:21] by sending it away as the scapegoat into [68:24] the wilderness. [68:26] Also Aaron is to present the bowl of the [68:28] sin offering which is for himself and so [68:31] make atonement for himself and his [68:33] house. He is to slaughter the bowl of [68:37] the sin offering which is for himself. [68:40] He is to s take a fire pan full of coals [68:43] of fire from off the altar before Adonai [68:46] plus two handfuls of sweet powdered [68:48] incense and bring it within the curtain. [68:52] Then he is to put the incense on the [68:54] fire before Adonai so that at the cloud [68:57] of the incense make so that the cloud of [69:00] the incense may cover the atonement [69:02] cover that is on the ark so that he [69:04] would not die. [69:07] He is then to take some of the blood of [69:09] the bowl and sprinkle it with his finger [69:11] on the atonement cover on the east side. [69:14] Before the atonement cover, he is to [69:16] sprinkle some of the blood with his [69:18] finger seven times. Then he is to [69:21] slaughter the goat of the sin offering [69:23] which is for the people, bring its blood [69:26] behind the curtain, and do with it as he [69:28] did with the blood of the bull, sprinkle [69:30] it upon the atonement cover, and before [69:33] the atonement cover. So he is to make [69:36] atonement for the holy place because of [69:38] the uncleanness of Benet Israel and [69:41] because of their transgressions all [69:43] their sins. He is to do the same for the [69:46] tent of meeting which dwells within them [69:49] with them in the midst of their [69:50] impurities. [69:52] No one is to be in the tent of meeting [69:54] when he enters to make atonement in the [69:56] holy place until he comes out and is [69:59] made atonement for himself and for his [70:01] household and for all the assembly of [70:04] Israel. [70:05] Then he is to go to the out to the altar [70:08] that is before Adonai and make atonement [70:11] for it. He is to take some of the bull's [70:14] blood and some of the goat's blood. [70:28] >> And what does he do with it? [70:32] dab it around on the horns of the altar. [70:35] He is to sprinkle some of the blood on [70:37] it with his finger seven times and [70:40] cleanse it and consecrate it from the [70:42] uncleanness of Ben Israel. When he has [70:45] finished atoning for the holy place, the [70:47] tent of meeting and the altar, then he [70:50] is to present the live goat. Aaron shall [70:54] lay both his hands on the head of the [70:55] live goat and confess over it all the [70:58] iniquities of Ben Israel and all their [71:01] transgressions, all their sins. He shall [71:04] place them on the head of the goat and [71:07] send it away into the wilderness by the [71:09] hand of a man who is in readiness. [71:12] The goat will carry all their iniquities [71:14] by itself into a solitary land, and he [71:18] is to leave the goat in the wilderness. [71:22] Then Aaron is to come into the tent of [71:24] meeting, take off the linen garments [71:26] that he put on when he went into the [71:28] holy place, and leave them there. He is [71:31] to bathe himself with water in a holy [71:34] place, put on his garments, and come out [71:37] to offer his burnt offering and the [71:39] burnt offering of the people, to make [71:41] atonement for himself and for the [71:43] people. Then he is to burn up fat of the [71:46] sin offering in the smoke on the altar. [71:50] The man who leaves the goat as a [71:52] scapegoat is to wash his clothes and [71:55] bathe his body in water. Afterward, he [71:58] may come into the camp. The bull for the [72:01] sin offering and the goat for the sin [72:03] offering whose blood was brought in to [72:05] make atonement in the holy place shall [72:07] be carried outside the camp and their [72:10] hides, their flesh and their dung buried [72:12] with fire, burned with fire. The one who [72:15] burns them is to wash his clothes and [72:18] bathe his body in water. Then afterward [72:21] he may come into the camp. It is to be a [72:24] statute to you forever that in the [72:26] seventh month, on the 10th day of the [72:28] month, you are to afflict your souls and [72:30] do no kind of work, both the nativeborn [72:33] and the outsider dwelling among you. For [72:36] on this day, atonement will be made for [72:39] you to cleanse you. From all your sins, [72:42] you will be clean before Adonai. It is a [72:46] Shabbat of solemn rest to you, and you [72:48] are to afflict your souls. It is a [72:51] statute forever. [72:53] The Cohen who is anointed and who is [72:56] consecrated to be Cohen in his father's [72:58] place will make the atonement and put on [73:02] the linen garments, the holy garments. [73:04] He is to make atonement for the holy [73:06] sanctuary, for the tent of meeting, for [73:08] the altar, for the kohanim, and for all [73:11] the people of the assembly. This will be [73:14] an everlasting statute for you to make [73:17] atonement for Ben Israel once in the [73:19] year because of all their sins. It was [73:22] done as Adonai commanded Moses. [73:27] And the second reading is from Numbers [73:30] 29:7-11. [73:37] On the 10th day of this seventh month, [73:40] you are to have a sacred assembly. You [73:42] are to deny yourselves and do no work. [73:45] You are to present to Adonai a burnt [73:48] offering as a pleasing aroma. One young [73:51] bull from the herd, one ram and [73:53] sevenyear-old male lambs without defect [73:58] along with their grain offerings of fine [74:00] flour mixed with oil. 3/10enth of an [74:03] epha with the bull, 2/10 with the ram, [74:06] and 1/10enth with each of the seven [74:08] lambs. [74:10] Also offer one male goat for a sin [74:12] offering in addition to the sin offering [74:15] for atonement, as well as the regular [74:18] burnt offering with its grain offering [74:20] and their drink offerings. [74:53] I just have a brief word regarding the [74:56] passage in Leviticus [74:58] in particular. [75:00] Um, want to call our attention to verse [75:03] 29. [75:04] And it shall be a statute to you forever [75:08] that in the seventh month on the 10th [75:10] day of the month, you shall afflict [75:11] yourselves and shall do no work, either [75:14] the native or the stranger who sojourns [75:18] among you. And I came across an [75:20] interesting article I wasn't looking [75:22] for. Should the church observe Yomapur? [75:27] Should the church observe yum kipur? [75:31] And it just struck me reading this [75:34] passage this year that truly even if one [75:38] is not a gentile in a messianic [75:41] congregation, [75:42] that if you have accepted Messiah [75:45] Yeshua, the Jewish Messiah for the whole [75:48] world, you've been grafted into the [75:52] commonwealth [75:53] of Israel. [75:55] And what is the point? What is the point [75:58] of yam kipur? What does it say the [76:00] purpose will be? [76:03] It's for the atonement [76:07] for whom? [76:10] >> Israel. All of the assembly of Israel. [76:13] So should the church at large observe [76:16] yumor? [76:19] >> Maybe they should. [76:21] >> Maybe they should recognize that they're [76:24] grafted in [76:26] to this call [76:29] to intercession and and reflection in [76:33] the Lord that if the gentile world were [76:39] to live in repentance, oh my goodness, [76:43] just think what that would be. Could it [76:45] possibly provoke Israel to jealousy [76:49] >> and therefore bring about world [76:52] redemption? [76:53] >> Amen. Amen. [77:06] The blessing before the half tower [77:07] reading. [77:28] Adonai [77:37] of [77:46] Amen. Amen. [78:05] >> The half hour reading is [78:08] um Isaiah chapter 57 verse 14 through [78:12] chapter 50 58 verse 14. [78:22] Okay. [78:28] Then it will be said, "Build up, build [78:30] up, prepare the way, remove every [78:33] stumbling block out of the way of my [78:36] people." [78:38] For thus says the high and exalted one [78:41] who inhabits eternity, whose name is [78:44] holy, I dwell in a high and holy place, [78:49] yet also with a contrite heart and [78:51] humble spirit. To revive the spirit of [78:54] the humble, revive the heart of the [78:57] contrite. For I will not contend [79:00] forever, nor I will always be angry. [79:04] For the spirit would grow weak before [79:06] me. the breath of those whom I made [79:11] because of the because of the iniquity [79:14] of the of his unjust gain. I was angry. [79:17] I struck him. I hid my face. I was [79:21] angry, but he went on backsliding in the [79:24] way of his heart. [79:26] I have seen his ways, but I will heal [79:29] him. I will lead him and restore comfort [79:33] to him and his mortars, creating the [79:38] praise of lips. Shalom. Shalom to him [79:41] who is far and to him who is near, says [79:45] Adonai. And I will heal him. [79:49] But the wicked are like a troubled sea, [79:52] for it cannot rest, and its waters toss [79:55] up mer and dirt. There is no shalom, [79:58] says my God, for the wicked. [80:01] Cry aloud, do not hold back. Raise your [80:05] voice like a chauffear. Tell my people, [80:08] tell my people their transgression, and [80:10] the house of Jacob their sins. Yet they [80:14] seek me day to day in delight to know my [80:18] ways, as if they were a nation that did [80:21] right and had not forsaken their God's [80:24] decree. [80:26] They ask me for righteous judgments. [80:29] They delight in the nearness of God. Why [80:32] have we fasted yet you do not see? Why [80:36] have we afflicted our souls yet you take [80:39] no notice? [80:41] Behold, in the day of your fast you seek [80:44] your own pleasure and exploit your own [80:47] all your laborers. [80:49] Behold, you fast for strife and [80:52] contention, and to strike with a wicked [80:55] fist. You should not fast as you do [80:58] today, to make your voice heard on high. [81:01] Is this the fast I have chosen, a day [81:04] for one to afflict his soul? Is it to [81:07] bow down his head like a reed and [81:10] spreading out sackcloth and ashes? Will [81:13] you call this a fast and a day [81:15] acceptable to Adonai? [81:18] Is not this the fast I ch uh excuse me. [81:23] Is not this the fast? [81:26] Is not this the fast I choose to release [81:29] the bonds of wickedness, to untie the [81:32] cords of the yoke, to let the oppressed [81:34] go free, to tear off every yoke. [81:38] Is it not to share your bread with the [81:41] hungry, to bring the homeless poor into [81:44] your house? When you see the naked to [81:47] cover him and not hide yourself from [81:50] your own flesh and blood, [81:52] then your light will break forth like [81:55] the dawn and your healing will spring up [81:58] speedily. Your righteousness will your [82:02] righteousness will go before you. The [82:04] glory of Adonai as your rear guard. Then [82:07] you will call and Adonai will answer. [82:10] You will cry and he will say, "Here I [82:13] am." [82:14] If you get rid of the yoke among you, [82:17] finger pointing and bath mouththing, if [82:20] you give yourself to the hungry and [82:23] satisfy the desire of the afflicted, [82:26] then your light will arise will rise in [82:28] the darkness and your gloom will be like [82:31] midday. [82:33] Then Adonia will guide you continually, [82:36] satisfy your soul in drought, and [82:38] strengthen your bones. [82:41] You will be like a watered garden, like [82:44] a spring of water whose waters never [82:46] fail. Some of you will rebuild the [82:49] ancient ruins, will raise up the age old [82:53] foundations, [82:56] will be called repairer of the brereech, [82:59] restoers, restorer of streets for [83:02] dwelling. If you turn back your foot [83:04] from Shabbat, from doing my pleasure on [83:07] my holy day, and call Shabbat a delight, [83:11] the holy day of Adonai honorable. If you [83:14] honor it, not go your own ways, not [83:17] seeking your own pleasure, nor speaking [83:20] your usual speech, then you will delight [83:23] yourself in Adonai, and I will let you [83:26] ride over the heights of the earth. I [83:28] will feed you with the heritage of your [83:31] father Jacob. For the mouth of Adonai [83:34] has spoken. [83:35] >> Amen. [83:52] The blessing between readings. [83:58] Elo. [84:19] Amen. [84:47] the righteous judge. Now when the son of [84:50] man comes in his glory and all his the [84:54] angel with him then he will sit on his [84:57] glorious throne. All the nation will be [85:00] gathered before him and he will separate [85:02] from them [85:05] separate them from one another just as a [85:09] shepherd separate the sheep from the [85:11] goats. And he will put the sheep on his [85:14] right [85:15] but the goats on his left. Then the king [85:19] will say to those on his right, "Come, [85:21] you who are blessed by my father, [85:23] inherit the kingdom prepared for you [85:26] from the foundation of the world. For I [85:29] was hungry and you give me something to [85:31] eat. I was thirsty and you gave me [85:34] something to drink. I was a stranger and [85:37] you invited me in. I was naked and you [85:41] clothe me. I was sick and you visited [85:44] me. I was in prison and you came to me. [85:48] Then the righteous will answer him, [85:51] Lord, when did we see you hungry and [85:53] feed you? Or thirsty and give you [85:56] something to drink? And when did we we [86:00] see you a stranger and invite you in? Or [86:03] naked and close you? When did we see you [86:07] sick or in prison and come to you? and [86:10] answering the king will say to them, [86:13] "Amen, I tell you, whatever whatever you [86:16] did to one of the least of these, my [86:19] brethren, you did it unto me." Then [86:24] he will also say to those on the left, [86:26] "Go away from me, you cursed one, into [86:29] the everlasting fire which has been [86:32] prepared for the devil and his angels. [86:35] For I was hungry and you gave me nothing [86:38] to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me [86:40] nothing to drink. I was a stranger and [86:44] you did not invite me in. Naked and you [86:47] did not close me. Sick and in prison and [86:51] you did not visit me. Then they too will [86:55] answer saying, "Lord, when did we see [86:58] you hungry or thirsty or stranger or [87:01] naked or sick or in prison or did not [87:04] care for you?" Then he will answer them, [87:07] saying, "Amen, I tell you, whatever you [87:10] did not do for one of the least of [87:13] these, you did not do it for me. [87:16] This shall go off to everlasting [87:19] punishment, but the righteous into [87:23] everlasting life. [87:38] The blessing after the final reading. [87:51] for [88:10] mechu. [88:13] Amen. [88:17] Before [88:24] we move on after the haftar and [88:27] apostolic reading we had, it seems an [88:29] appropriate time to remind you that the [88:32] 42nd annual Yom Kipur hunger appeal is [88:36] going on. There's brochures next to the [88:38] calendars we have on the table and the [88:41] foyer as you go out to the right. Um, [88:45] you know, we are to feed the hungry. We [88:49] are to take care of the poor, not just [88:51] among our brothers and sisters of [88:54] Israel, but um our communities and um [88:58] the Jewish community has a strong [89:01] partnership [89:03] because of our values. We have a strong [89:05] partnership with these hunger appeals. [89:08] And this is um everything you give goes [89:11] to the regional food bank. um serving [89:14] our whole area, the Hudson Valley. So, [89:18] um consider taking what you would have [89:20] spent on food today and donating it or [89:25] um just find your closest food bank and [89:28] bring something that they can use. [89:32] Okay, so we're going to continue now on [89:34] page 10 of the Moxor [89:37] at Fry's greeting. I like that. And uh [89:40] we need two volunteers to come and open [89:43] the ark for Hashibainu. [89:47] Come running. [89:50] Go ahead. Rosene and [89:53] >> I'll do it again. If nobody else [89:57] >> Joanne, you want to go with Rosene? [89:59] >> I don't have a [90:00] >> It's okay. Yeah, it's okay. [90:02] >> It's not required for women. [90:15] And again, we'll stand while the ark is [90:18] open as we um chant Hasheu together. [90:31] >> Thank you. You can just stay there. [90:36] Hashu [90:39] hash [90:44] von [90:50] Vu [90:53] shou [91:20] And you may be seated. [91:57] Good to see you. [92:15] Well, I was going to say that um since [92:18] Yam Kapoor [92:20] isn't one of the days [92:24] when um [92:27] rabbis used to give sermons [92:29] I I think I've got an out for today. [92:35] Um [92:40] I do have uh some [92:43] thoughts [92:45] which I'm not I'm not sure [92:50] um [92:52] not sure [92:54] exactly how will come across. I'm I'm [92:57] most interested in things that have to [93:00] do with Jonah right now. [93:04] I don't want to ruin the discussion for [93:06] later, [93:08] although I don't know if that's [93:10] possible. [93:12] Um [93:13] but um [93:17] you might remember [93:20] the other day um [93:24] I was uh I was talking about kindness. [93:27] Do you remember that? [93:29] >> Yes. [93:30] >> Is anyone here kind? [93:33] >> Kindness. [93:38] Um, [93:42] is anyone here unkind? [93:49] >> Um, [93:51] you know, I I was telling my wife [93:54] there's a guy in the town that I went to [93:57] um high school and he was two years [93:59] ahead of me. He was in one of my [94:01] brother's classes. [94:04] I recently got in in touch with him [94:07] through um all this wacky technological [94:10] stuff we now have. And [94:13] um [94:15] and then a term I like even less than [94:18] technology is social media. Uh I'm not [94:22] sure what social media is. I know it's [94:25] media. I'm not sure how social it is. Um [94:29] but in some ways uh it functions that [94:32] way. In other ways it doesn't. But um [94:35] anyway, I I guess maybe it was just a [94:38] prompting I felt to um [94:41] try to connect with him. I I mean, I [94:43] knew him, but I never really um [94:47] you know, we weren't we weren't friends. [94:49] We didn't really do anything together. [94:53] I guess I thought he was a friend of my [94:56] brothers, but um [94:59] anyway [95:00] um [95:02] on a good day I'm I'm interested in [95:05] people. [95:07] Um [95:09] I mean is there anything more [95:11] interesting than people that you can [95:12] think of? [95:17] >> I mean some what? [95:20] >> What? [95:20] >> Never mind. Some people might say, [95:22] "Well, insects are more interesting than [95:24] people." [95:25] >> Sorry. [95:30] >> Some people might say, "Well, man, the [95:32] there's so many marvelous and weird sea [95:36] creatures. I mean, that all that stuff [95:38] down there must be more interesting than [95:40] people." And well, and it can be really [95:43] um you can get really absorbed. I mean, [95:45] there's a lot of amazing stuff in [95:47] creation, right? [95:50] And I think it's there to uh amaze us. [95:54] And uh Are you sticking around? [95:58] >> Ah, yeah. There's some back there. [96:02] >> Um a baseball cap counts, doesn't it? [96:05] >> Yep. [96:09] I I was thinking that there's probably a [96:12] rebbitic argument somewhere as to [96:14] whether or not when a person is entirely [96:17] bald if they're considered to have a [96:19] keepa all the time. Um I just came up [96:23] with that and lost my train of thought. [96:25] What was I saying? Oh yeah, there's a [96:27] lot of really amazing stuff. And I think [96:30] um I think one of the reasons um [96:36] God made so many amazing things just [96:40] because he wanted to share them with us [96:44] and um wanted to show us something about [96:48] himself in in all of them. Um, [96:53] I I find no end of amazement in the [96:55] natural world, and I I'm sure I know [96:57] hardly any of what's there really. [97:01] But, um, [97:04] but if if he created all of those things [97:07] because he wanted to share them with [97:09] humanity, then I I'm thinking humanity [97:12] must be the most interesting thing in [97:16] his creation to God. What do you think? [97:20] Yeah. [97:20] >> Yeah. [97:21] >> He um and he created man because [97:26] he [97:29] didn't want [97:31] to be alone. [97:34] Now, [97:36] we could argue about whether or not he [97:38] was truly alone, but there was something [97:40] that he wanted. [97:42] And um just as it wasn't good for the [97:46] first man to be alone, [97:48] wasn't good for God to be alone and God [97:51] wanted uh so to speak [97:54] uh to have a wife [97:57] and uh so he created man to have a [98:01] relationship with. And so he must have [98:04] found man more interesting than anything [98:06] else. It's possible to get tired of [98:09] people, to get tired of men, [98:13] and to kind of prefer not to have much [98:16] to do with them and absorb yourself in [98:18] something else. [98:20] Um, [98:22] even though I never thought it was right [98:24] not to care about people, there was a [98:26] time when I was much much younger, and I [98:29] am very, very old now. [98:32] um when I actually wanted to just go off [98:36] in the middle of now place [98:38] and be away from everything, not be [98:41] bothered by people, not have people [98:44] problems because where there weren't any [98:46] people, there weren't any people [98:48] problems. Although [98:51] I mean the only problem with that is you [98:54] know what it is, right? [98:57] >> What? [98:59] >> Yes. Wherever you go there you are. [99:03] And I remember one time being in the [99:05] middle of now place in northern [99:06] Minnesota in the deep winter. [99:10] Um [99:12] yeah, I was quite alone. I mean I I had [99:15] a a person a friend of mine camping with [99:18] me. But you know at that moment I was by [99:23] myself. I think it was early in the [99:25] morning. [99:27] Yeah. Yeah. I would go camping in [99:29] sub-zero weather in northern Minnesota, [99:32] many miles off of a road. [99:35] And I remember [99:38] looking around [99:41] and thinking [99:46] how lonely it was [99:50] and how [99:52] crushing [99:55] empty loneliness would be if I really
[100:00] got a lot of it.
[100:03] You know what I'm saying? Mhm.
[100:05] >> Um I think in those moments I was and I
[100:08] don't know whether I still had any
[100:10] thought of being a hermit or anything
[100:11] like that at that point, but I just I
[100:15] remember this one moment thinking, "Wow,
[100:21] it's not good. It's not good to be
[100:23] alone. It's not good to wall people out.
[100:29] It's good to care about people, but
[100:31] caring about people can hurt.
[100:35] >> And uh I think that's why initially
[100:39] actually I
[100:41] decided that I wanted to just be all by
[100:44] myself because I I wanted to get away
[100:46] from pain. But then as was pointed out
[100:52] um I was wherever I went even if nobody
[100:55] else was. So it didn't really solve the
[100:58] problem.
[101:00] So anyway, um
[101:04] I I do think actually I think people are
[101:07] the most interesting thing on the face
[101:08] of the earth.
[101:10] So there are really really interesting
[101:12] things.
[101:14] But for most people if they find really
[101:17] really super interesting things and
[101:19] they're just totally enthralled with it
[101:21] doesn't seem complete if they can't
[101:23] share it with somebody else. Yeah,
[101:25] >> there may be some exceptions where
[101:27] somebody that really doesn't seem that
[101:29] way, but why why would that be that that
[101:33] you would need to share it with someone
[101:35] else? Um may maybe the whole experience
[101:39] is actually isn't complete if it's just
[101:41] totally you.
[101:43] >> Yeah.
[101:45] >> Um so I don't know what does that have
[101:47] to do with what I started to say. Um
[101:52] kindness. Oh, yeah. This friend from my
[101:56] brother's high school class, I sent him
[101:59] some messages and I just made some
[102:01] observations
[102:03] about what what he always seemed like to
[102:06] me. They were honest observations.
[102:10] Um, I wasn't concocting anything.
[102:14] Wasn't trying to flatter him. And and I
[102:16] knew other things about him that that
[102:19] wouldn't have been like probably so nice
[102:22] to say.
[102:24] But um he was really really really
[102:28] affected by what I said
[102:31] and he told me something to the effect
[102:33] that
[102:34] no nobody had ever spoken of him that
[102:38] way. Nobody had ever given him a
[102:40] compliment like that in his life. I I
[102:42] wasn't even trying to compliment them
[102:44] really. I was just
[102:47] I was just saying you know this is this
[102:49] is who you seemed like to me way back
[102:51] then.
[102:52] And it it made me think about how
[102:56] and I and I this is an ongoing thing and
[102:59] it's not constant but
[103:03] but see once I got in touch with him I
[103:05] thought well you know there must be a
[103:07] purpose for this the fact that I can
[103:09] connect with him
[103:12] and uh and I you know I I ended up
[103:15] sending him some verses the other day
[103:19] um
[103:21] And
[103:24] anyway,
[103:26] I guess the point I was trying to make
[103:28] in saying that is that um
[103:33] some little shred of kindness,
[103:38] if you find it in yourself to put it out
[103:42] there,
[103:44] might really make a huge difference
[103:48] in somebody's life. And I I also think
[103:52] and and it matters to make a difference.
[103:54] It matters if a difference is made in
[103:56] somebody's life, especially in the life
[103:58] of someone who really needs
[104:04] has, you know, real deep needs.
[104:10] But it's it does something
[104:14] to you when you're kind. It creates
[104:18] something in you. It generates something
[104:20] in you. The impulse to allow it to come
[104:23] out of you if if it's acted on has an
[104:29] effect. Do you do you think it does? I
[104:31] mean I mean do you ever notice that it
[104:33] does? Yeah.
[104:35] >> Um, and also likewise the the act of the
[104:40] opposite, something that's u I don't
[104:43] know, scoffing, insulting,
[104:48] doesn't even have to be an outright
[104:50] insult.
[104:52] It has an effect on whoever receives it,
[104:56] but it also has an effect on the the
[104:58] sender or the giver, right?
[105:02] But um
[105:04] anyway, I've just found as I've looked
[105:06] around in this dangerous world, and it's
[105:09] a it's a dangerous world. It's a Would
[105:12] you do you think it's a cruel world
[105:13] we're living in?
[105:16] >> It's a lot of cruelty.
[105:19] And um
[105:22] and just like all of what's in creation
[105:26] that I don't know about, I'm sure there
[105:28] is vast tracks of cruelty that I'm
[105:31] unaware of.
[105:33] >> But the cruelty I do know about and that
[105:35] is quite a bit.
[105:38] >> I some I've witnessed, some I've read
[105:40] about,
[105:43] some of it's recorded in the scriptures.
[105:47] Um,
[105:50] it's pretty deep and dark and nasty
[105:55] and uh it just seems like there's
[105:58] something
[106:01] in humanity as a whole
[106:06] that
[106:08] often times gives itself to to cruelty
[106:14] to destroying other people whether
[106:18] literally
[106:20] or with words
[106:23] publicly or privately.
[106:27] And I think that thing is in all of us.
[106:32] And when I notice it in me, I don't I
[106:35] don't like it.
[106:37] I don't like it.
[106:40] I don't think it should be there.
[106:44] And um
[106:47] it's it's for some reason
[106:50] I don't know if it matters more but it
[106:52] seems like
[106:54] just that we become
[106:57] kind people
[106:59] that I become a kinder and kinder person
[107:03] that we all become kind that kindness is
[107:11] what we seek. We seek to be kind.
[107:15] It's what what we want, how we act, how
[107:18] how we're
[107:21] calibrated.
[107:23] That that kindness would be what comes
[107:26] out of us
[107:28] when whatever
[107:30] is happening around us happens.
[107:34] And you can be kind without lying and
[107:36] without ignoring things that are wrong.
[107:40] Don't you think?
[107:43] Um,
[107:45] so
[107:48] and it it's in one of the verses in
[107:50] Proverbs, I think it's in 19, it says,
[107:54] Proverbs 19,
[107:58] that what's desired in a man or a person
[108:04] is his kindness.
[108:08] What do you what do you think that
[108:09] means? If you really tried to unpack it,
[108:12] if that's what's desired in a human
[108:14] being, then what what is kindness?
[108:20] I
[108:20] >> mean, is it just being nice?
[108:28] seeking the other person's
[108:31] >> this um
[108:34] this guy Jonah
[108:39] God called him and I mean he was already
[108:43] a prophet
[108:45] asked him to go to Nineveh
[108:49] and he didn't want to go I I I think I
[108:53] know why. There are all kinds of
[108:55] different opinions,
[108:58] but he didn't want to go
[109:02] and he didn't want to be kind. Do you
[109:04] think you agree with me?
[109:06] >> Mhm. And what's even more is he didn't
[109:08] want God to want to be to he didn't want
[109:11] God to be kind.
[109:14] And his his kind of main complaint about
[109:17] God in the book is basically that I knew
[109:20] you were kind. I knew it. You're kind
[109:24] and compassionate.
[109:26] You know, you forgive. You
[109:30] not what I want. I want them dead. I
[109:34] want it destroyed.
[109:37] And this is a prophet. This is a prophet
[109:40] of the one true God.
[109:43] And I don't know, does anybody notice
[109:45] anything like that in any uh preachers
[109:49] or other believers or
[109:53] groups or ever in yourself? Do you you
[109:56] ever you ever notice anything like that?
[109:58] I mean, you don't ne necessarily have to
[110:00] be calling for death,
[110:02] but but can you find um
[110:08] >> I mean, can you locate anything that's
[110:10] anything like that that exists inside of
[110:13] yourself?
[110:14] >> Sure.
[110:18] >> It's uh
[110:20] and it's okay if you can that if you
[110:24] can. I think it just means you're being
[110:26] a little honest.
[110:28] If you can't, maybe you're not being
[110:30] honest.
[110:32] But but it's there. I mean, we have this
[110:34] capacity. We don't have to try to
[110:37] pretend it's not there. We don't have to
[110:38] deny it. We don't have to cover it up
[110:41] with something else. What we need is to
[110:43] realize what can be in us and then seek
[110:49] God to
[110:51] give us the grace
[110:54] and the insight and the wisdom to
[110:56] overcome it. I would say to overcome
[111:00] unkindness.
[111:03] And um I think one of the things
[111:08] um
[111:10] well I'm I'm going to read you a couple
[111:11] of things. Um they're very short.
[111:16] Um,
[111:19] I I found this in in an article where
[111:22] somebody was talking about Jonah
[111:27] and uh in the process they mentioned
[111:32] um
[111:35] does anyone know of Gotfrieded Wilhelm
[111:38] Lee?
[111:42] >> Doesn't doesn't matter. He lived in 1646
[111:44] to 1716.
[111:48] He he said that about witnessing
[111:52] punitive justice. He said it should
[111:55] satisfy the observer just like fine
[111:58] music
[112:00] or good architecture. What do you think
[112:03] of that?
[112:04] >> Say it again.
[112:06] >> Witnessing punitive justice. I mean that
[112:09] could be somebody getting lashes or
[112:11] somebody being hung
[112:16] that that witnessing that should satisfy
[112:20] the observer just like fine music or
[112:22] good architecture. What do you think of
[112:24] that?
[112:30] You know, in England pe people used to
[112:32] gather for public hangings
[112:36] just to see it, you know. I mean, it's
[112:40] it it must be related to that thing and
[112:43] people that gathered on on sidewalks
[112:46] below somebody who's at a high building
[112:48] standing on the top thinking about
[112:50] jumping. And people gather around at the
[112:53] bottom and they they don't yell, "Don't
[112:55] do it." They yell, "Jump. Yeah.
[112:59] >> Can I mean they literally do that jump.
[113:07] >> And when people in many places see a
[113:10] fight like on playgrounds at schools,
[113:14] they gather around in a circle and they
[113:16] yell horrible things and they'll push a
[113:18] kid that doesn't want to fight back in
[113:19] because they want to see the fight. They
[113:21] want to see the blows land. I I've I've
[113:26] been through it when I was a kid in
[113:28] Sacramento. I found it rather
[113:30] terrifying,
[113:32] but I wouldn't fight
[113:34] and I just kept trying to get out and
[113:37] finally they gave up and they let me
[113:38] out, but I I didn't think they were
[113:40] going to. Anyway,
[113:43] then Thomas Aquinus, anybody ever heard
[113:45] of him?
[113:46] >> Yes.
[113:47] >> Pretty good guy, don't you think?
[113:51] I I'm not judging Thomas Aquinus, by the
[113:54] way. I I'm not even going to express an
[113:56] opinion, but I I just I thought this was
[113:59] interesting
[114:01] that he wrote,
[114:03] "The blessed in the kingdom of heaven
[114:05] will see the punishments of the damned
[114:09] and that their that their bliss may be
[114:13] more delightful to them."
[114:19] >> What do you think of that?
[114:24] Well, there is a theology that kind of
[114:26] goes along with this that says that
[114:30] that that God takes great enjoyment in
[114:33] that himself.
[114:35] I I don't I don't really want to get
[114:37] into it, but um the notion that those
[114:41] blessed in the kingdom of heaven would
[114:44] would view the punishment
[114:48] of damned people
[114:50] for the purpose that their their bliss
[114:53] would be more delightful to them. I I
[114:56] find it just absolutely grotesque.
[115:02] And I think I can see why this came up
[115:05] in a discussion of Jonah, but written by
[115:08] a rabbi.
[115:10] Um,
[115:16] and we still don't really know exactly
[115:18] what happened with Jonah after the whole
[115:20] thing was over.
[115:24] Um, maybe it's because
[115:28] the book is about us.
[115:31] >> Yeah.
[115:33] And whoever is still living and
[115:35] breathing, who reads it
[115:37] is still living and breathing and the
[115:39] story is not yet over.
[115:42] >> What do you think?
[115:44] So,
[115:47] we may never have sat outside of a city
[115:50] and hoped that it would be destroyed
[115:53] with everyone in it. But I got to tell
[115:55] you, I've heard responses to terrible
[115:59] things that happened
[116:01] from famous preachers and other people
[116:06] that sounded like that's just exactly
[116:09] what they did want.
[116:11] >> And I I just it I find that very
[116:14] troubling.
[116:17] I don't want that kind of thinking in
[116:21] me.
[116:22] And I think there's something that
[116:24] happens
[116:28] and you know I'm not saying it hasn't
[116:30] happened in in some of these people that
[116:32] that was I'm not mentioning their names
[116:35] but a lot of you know there's all kinds
[116:36] of public stuff you could look things up
[116:38] if you wanted. There's something that
[116:41] happens in a person when they really
[116:43] encounter
[116:45] Messiah, when they encounter Yeshua,
[116:49] that
[116:50] that when the realization of who and
[116:54] what they've encountered really comes
[116:57] home.
[116:59] I I think at that moment right then at
[117:03] least all of that vanishes
[117:07] and they see Yeshua
[117:11] and they see themsel
[117:14] and um
[117:17] there was this guy named Shimon Kefa.
[117:22] I'm I'm named after him. Most people say
[117:26] Simon Peter.
[117:30] He um he encounters him.
[117:35] And I believe the first time was had to
[117:38] do with a catch of fish, didn't it?
[117:44] And I I could I could just read the I I
[117:48] quoted part of it here, but maybe I
[117:50] should back up a little bit.
[117:52] It's in the book of Luke
[117:59] in chapter 5.
[118:12] Um, let me see here.
[118:26] Okay.
[118:30] So, yeah, this is after um
[118:39] I'll just start from the first verse.
[118:41] Now it happened that while the crowd was
[118:44] pressing around him, that being Yeshua,
[118:48] and listening to the word of God, he was
[118:53] standing by the lake,
[118:56] the by the canerat,
[119:00] and he saw two boats lying at the edge
[119:03] of the lake,
[119:05] but the fishermen had gotten out of them
[119:07] and were washing their nets. And he got
[119:10] into one of the boats, which was
[119:12] Simon's, and asked him to put out a
[119:14] little way from land.
[119:18] And he sat down and began teaching the
[119:20] people from the boat. I guess I guess
[119:23] this is cuz he didn't want to get
[119:24] squished.
[119:29] Needed a little little bit of room.
[119:32] And when he had finished speaking, he
[119:34] says to Shimon,
[119:36] "Put out into the deep water and let
[119:38] down your nets for a catch."
[119:41] And Shimone answered and said, "Master,
[119:43] we worked hard all night and caught
[119:45] nothing, but I I will do as you say and
[119:49] let down the nets."
[119:53] When they had done this, they enclosed a
[119:55] great quantity of fish, and their nets
[119:57] began to break.
[120:00] So they signaled to their partners in
[120:03] the other boat for them to come and help
[120:05] them and they came and filled both of
[120:08] the boats so that they began to sink.
[120:14] I I dare guess that that was the biggest
[120:18] catch they'd ever gotten.
[120:21] But when Shimon Peter saw that, he fell
[120:26] down at Yeshua's feet, saying,
[120:29] "Go away from me, Lord, for I am a
[120:33] sinful man."
[120:37] See, that that's the moment of
[120:44] naked awareness of oneself in the
[120:47] presence of holiness.
[120:50] It it's it's this the difference is so
[120:53] stark
[120:55] that it's like you can't even bear it.
[121:02] Though though I would say when that
[121:05] happens it's always accompanied by
[121:08] by grace and the availability of mercy.
[121:12] So it's not just it's not just
[121:14] condemnation that is felt
[121:17] but but he really he really saw it he
[121:20] came to this realization and he says go
[121:22] away from me Lord for I'm a sinful man
[121:26] for amazement had seized him and all his
[121:30] companions because of the catch of fish
[121:32] which they had taken.
[121:39] And so also were
[121:42] Jacob and Yohanan,
[121:44] sons of Zebedee, who were partners with
[121:47] Shimon.
[121:48] And Yeshua said to Simon, "Do not fear.
[121:52] From now on, you will be catching men."
[121:56] When they had brought their boats to the
[121:57] land, they left everything and followed
[121:59] him. So, you know, shortly after saying,
[122:03] "Depart from me. I'm I'm just wicked.
[122:05] You can't you shouldn't be able to stand
[122:07] me." and I I don't know that I can stand
[122:10] myself in your presence.
[122:12] Just, you know, go away. I'm I'm done
[122:14] for. I'm just I'm wicked. I'm sinful.
[122:19] He ends up following him.
[122:21] And um
[122:24] so
[122:28] I don't know why did he end up following
[122:31] him?
[122:37] Well, was it because he said, "You're
[122:39] right. You're wicked and worthless and
[122:41] terrible, and I'm glad you finally come
[122:44] to realize it and you get away." He
[122:47] didn't he didn't say that, did he?
[122:50] Basically, the message is, "Yeah, I
[122:53] know. I know you're sinful
[122:58] and I choose you."
[123:02] >> That
[123:05] he he was
[123:07] He had himself revealed
[123:10] in the most naked way in his own mind
[123:13] and consciousness.
[123:16] And at the same time, the kindness of
[123:18] God was flooding
[123:20] down upon him and calling him in to
[123:24] service to the one holy God.
[123:29] and um
[123:33] the way Yeshua was right then.
[123:38] I wonder how many moments there might
[123:40] come along in our life
[123:43] when something of this nature is
[123:45] happening.
[123:47] And it's it's not because
[123:50] we're so holy or righteous,
[123:55] but um
[123:58] someone could encounter the Lord
[124:04] through us in contact with us because
[124:08] God works through people
[124:13] and
[124:17] we can be the ones that have the
[124:19] kindness of God
[124:23] to pour upon them.
[124:25] >> I mean certainly we should always have
[124:27] this for each other for other people who
[124:31] who have the same
[124:34] convictions and faith that we do. We
[124:36] should have kindness for them all the
[124:38] time, shouldn't we?
[124:39] >> And well, and we do, don't we? Every at
[124:41] every moment, we always have it, don't
[124:43] we?
[124:48] We may have it, but we don't always use
[124:50] it. It
[124:51] >> Well, I would say it must be available,
[124:56] >> but we we don't always use it.
[125:00] >> And you know, the the part of the good
[125:03] news about that is that God's response
[125:05] to us if we're unkind is that
[125:09] he he continues to be a kind and
[125:12] compassionate God, doesn't he?
[125:16] God's still kind. He doesn't stop being
[125:18] kind if we if we're unkind.
[125:22] He may reveal it to us
[125:25] in a way that um makes us
[125:29] weep
[125:31] or in moments when things like that are
[125:34] revealed, we could be tempted to put
[125:38] ourselves down and condemn ourselves.
[125:39] But that's never what he comes for.
[125:43] He always comes for
[125:45] restoration and truth. And he wants to
[125:49] lift us up. And he wants us to be able
[125:53] to act like him and lift other people
[125:55] up.
[125:58] And um in our lives, we encounter people
[126:01] that um
[126:04] we don't like, don't we? You ever
[126:08] encounter someone you don't like?
[126:10] >> Yeah. Was it Will Rogers that said he
[126:12] never met a man he didn't like?
[126:15] >> Yeah. I will I will tell I will say this
[126:20] >> more and more I'm getting to be like
[126:22] that. I don't meet men that I don't
[126:24] like.
[126:27] I I I don't really know. Um I mean
[126:30] that's that's like the only thing I know
[126:31] about Will Rogers is that he said that.
[126:35] But but but I'll tell you something. And
[126:38] I mean I there have been people in my
[126:40] life that I really didn't like. I
[126:42] remember working with some of them.
[126:47] Two or three in particular I can think
[126:48] of that I I really really really didn't
[126:51] like
[126:54] and um
[126:58] years ago when I was a much younger man.
[127:03] But the thing is I was aware that I
[127:05] didn't like them and something in me
[127:08] didn't like that I didn't like them
[127:12] and I and I felt conviction and um the
[127:15] ones that I'm thinking of well two of
[127:18] the three at least
[127:21] um I became friends with and one of them
[127:24] I became quite close to
[127:27] >> but I found him to be absolutely
[127:29] repulsive and repugnant when I was
[127:32] working with me try to get under my skin
[127:34] on purpose.
[127:37] And um
[127:41] I just I really had to, you know, reach
[127:46] up reach up for the grace to to be kind.
[127:50] But I um it was a kind of a long slow
[127:52] process.
[127:55] But so what my point being that I
[127:59] certainly didn't like him. There was
[128:00] nothing I na in me that naturally liked
[128:04] him when we encountered each other. But
[128:06] he didn't turn out to be a man that I
[128:09] didn't like.
[128:11] Nor did the other one.
[128:14] And um the third one I I don't think he
[128:17] was he I don't think he was around that
[128:19] long. I don't know what would have
[128:20] happened. I mean, he he was
[128:23] I was actually
[128:25] uncomfortable working around him because
[128:27] he didn't look he only he didn't look
[128:30] out for anybody else and there were
[128:32] dangerous things happening in that shop.
[128:34] And I didn't feel safe turning my back.
[128:38] Not because he would attack me, but
[128:39] because he wouldn't think of me when he
[128:42] did whatever he did. And and he was
[128:45] pretty nasty.
[128:47] But underneath all of that
[128:51] is just a human being made in God's
[128:54] image.
[128:55] And you might remember me saying the
[128:57] other day
[128:59] that um
[129:03] repentance,
[129:06] the whole thing about repentance, it's
[129:08] not about
[129:10] humiliation,
[129:12] but the reaffirmation
[129:15] of the self
[129:17] in the image of God.
[129:21] And no matter who we meet, wherever we
[129:25] meet them, whoever they are,
[129:30] no matter how repugnant they might seem,
[129:34] that is what we should want for them.
[129:36] And we should be able to see the human
[129:38] being.
[129:40] And we should be able to see ourself in
[129:43] some way in in their face and in their
[129:46] person
[129:49] and uh and have compassion.
[129:52] It's it's the it's the Lord's way.
[129:58] Um,
[130:01] so
[130:12] how to cap this off?
[130:21] >> What? Let's go.
[130:26] >> Yeah. Um
[130:29] I think I think
[130:32] becoming kind, becoming kinder, being
[130:36] kind.
[130:37] It's um I think it ought to be a
[130:40] lifetime pursuit.
[130:43] I think it ought to be what we're
[130:45] striding towards along with the Lord.
[130:50] It doesn't matter how much we find
[130:53] failure in ourself.
[130:56] That's that's not really the issue.
[131:00] It's
[131:02] if we notice
[131:05] that we're not kind. It could be that we
[131:07] don't want to do the kind thing and we
[131:10] don't actually do an outward action. Or
[131:13] it could be that we do something unkind.
[131:15] It could be something we say. It could
[131:17] be something we do. I mean, you might
[131:20] throw something at somebody. Nobody
[131:22] would do that, would they?
[131:26] Um, there all kinds of things. Um,
[131:31] it's like, you know, somebody
[131:35] tries to get in front of you in a line.
[131:41] Can you imagine just not even caring?
[131:49] I can I I can I I think I I think there
[131:52] are times when I've
[131:54] in my whole life where I've been both.
[131:56] But um it's like well what if somebody
[132:00] went in front of me?
[132:01] >> What if I had waited longer than them?
[132:04] >> What if how much does it matter?
[132:11] But then to actually
[132:13] express some kindness in some way toward
[132:16] them. You know, sometimes people know
[132:18] they're being rude and unkind.
[132:21] >> What?
[132:25] I need to finish.
[132:28] Um
[132:32] Yeshua didn't um revile when he was
[132:36] reviled. He didn't curse when he was
[132:38] cursed.
[132:40] >> And um I think we should seek the Lord
[132:44] for um
[132:49] just uh
[132:52] that he would teach us a way of
[132:55] kindness.
[132:58] and um
[133:01] he's been kind to us
[133:04] and
[133:13] let's allow him
[133:16] to
[133:18] transform us more
[133:23] as we express our gratitude for
[133:27] redemption.
[133:48] So, we're Oh,
[133:49] >> we're not.
[133:54] We are about to conclude the morning
[133:58] service with the Elenu and uh then I
[134:01] have some announcements for what's
[134:03] happening the rest of today and this
[134:06] week. So um again we need someone to
[134:11] open the ark.
[134:13] Would you like to doodoo
[134:16] with Bob?
[134:33] It's okay.
[134:37] >> Pretend you're wearing an insider.
[134:39] >> Okay, one
[134:41] >> here. Here we go.
[134:51] And the Elenu is on page 11 in our um
[134:55] moxur.
[135:15] Shalom
[135:24] New Coruno
[135:49] melo.
[135:51] Mo a
[135:54] mcu
[135:56] epulo.
[136:22] a node. We hope, oh Lord our God, to
[136:26] soon behold your majestic glory when all
[136:28] abominations shall be removed and all
[136:31] false gods shall be at an end. Then
[136:34] shall the world be perfected under the
[136:36] rule of the Lord Almighty, and all
[136:39] mankind shall call upon your name. For
[136:42] to you every knee must bow and every
[136:45] tongue declare that you are God. Reign
[136:48] over us soon. May the forever. May the
[136:51] kingdom of David's greater son be
[136:53] established forever. For then shall the
[136:56] words be fulfilled.
[137:08] Call her.
[137:28] You can close the ark. Thank you.
[137:36] Okay. Some announcements before we uh
[137:39] end the live stream for those of you
[137:41] who've been watching. We are going to be
[137:43] here all afternoon and then we'll be
[137:45] breaking the fast tonight if you would
[137:48] like to join us in person. Um we will be
[137:52] doing um a messianic yizor service. We
[137:55] do not actually, you know, the the
[137:58] intention behind Yuskar was that we
[138:01] would remember people we have lost. And
[138:04] in their memory, we would do charity. We
[138:07] would do acts of charity. And frankly,
[138:10] um, it's becoming something a little bit
[138:12] more along the lines of praying for the
[138:14] dead and trying to get them out of
[138:15] purgatory. So, we don't do that, but we
[138:18] have some scriptures to share. And then
[138:20] we'll say the mourner's cottish. And
[138:22] that's just for everyone who has lost
[138:25] anyone ever at any point. We like to do
[138:28] that special membrance. So that will be
[138:30] happening this afternoon. Um immediately
[138:35] following the conclusion of this uh we
[138:39] will be taking a break for about 20
[138:42] minutes and we're going to be resetting
[138:44] the room for our time of prayer and
[138:48] we're going to do what we did last year.
[138:50] We will have five separate categories of
[138:52] things we're praying for. Each category
[138:54] will begin with a lead in with a song to
[138:57] kind of get us focused and wake us back
[138:59] up. And um we just encourage people to
[139:03] pray out anything as they feel. We'll
[139:05] leave the mic open in case people who
[139:07] pray very quietly would like to be heard
[139:09] so we can amen your prayer. And then
[139:12] after that we will um um actually sorry
[139:19] the order is wrong. We're going to have
[139:20] yizor right after the break. So we'll
[139:22] reather for ykar and then we're going to
[139:25] have the open prayer time and then we
[139:28] will conclude that with a couple pieces
[139:30] of liturgy and we will be um discussing
[139:34] Yona
[139:35] reading through and discussing Yona
[139:38] somewhere around 4:35ish.
[139:41] it be flexible, see where we are in the
[139:43] day, and then we have a nice long period
[139:46] of time to do that. And then we will be
[139:49] um making sure we've got food ready and
[139:51] we'll be concluding uh with service.
[139:54] None of the rest of this, sorry, is
[139:55] going to be live streamed. Um but we'll
[139:58] be concluding around 7ish and preparing
[140:01] to break the fast together. So, anyone
[140:04] have any questions about what we're
[140:05] doing today? There are crafts for the
[140:08] children. Anything that the children can
[140:10] do quietly at the tables that we're
[140:12] going to have in here while we do
[140:14] prayer, that's welcome so that the
[140:16] parents don't have to miss the whole
[140:17] prayer time. But anything that the
[140:20] children need to do that involves
[140:22] gluing, especially glitter glue,
[140:24] definitely stays in the back room. Um,
[140:27] we have a chain to work on. Probably
[140:30] that would go in the back room, too. The
[140:32] click click of the stapler might be just
[140:33] a little too uh uh crazy for that. But
[140:37] um Nata is in charge of what's going on
[140:40] in the back room. Um see I can delegate.
[140:43] Like I put the stuff there, gave it to
[140:45] her and said it's all yours. So ask her
[140:47] what to do. Um if people need to eat
[140:51] because uh they need to eat. You know,
[140:53] everybody's got different physical
[140:55] limitations and health issues or
[140:56] whatever. We just ask that you keep food
[140:58] out of the sanctuary and um try not to
[141:02] torture those who are fasting too too
[141:05] much. Right.
[141:06] this week. Um, again, we on Thursday, we
[141:11] will be here from 300 p.m. on to build
[141:14] and decorate our suka. So, the children
[141:16] are working on some suka decorations and
[141:19] hopefully we'll bring some from home. It
[141:22] the weather looks good for Thursday. So,
[141:25] um, might rain on us on Friday, but we
[141:27] won't be here on Friday. Instead, we
[141:29] will be here on Shabbat and we are going
[141:32] to be celebrating Sukkot together
[141:34] because it's on Shabbat. We'll have the
[141:36] Lulu love and ROG then. If you purchase
[141:38] that, those are $45 and uh we'll be
[141:42] handing them out and using them then.
[141:45] And uh I think that is it for the
[141:48] announcement type things. Other things
[141:51] will be appearing on the calendar as
[141:54] they happen. So we want to conclude uh
[141:57] with Amisha Barak. We have a lot of
[141:59] people to be praying for. All of the war
[142:02] wounded, Rona recovering from surgery,

[142:26] to the emergency room with tacoc cardia
[142:29] and may have an infection in the
[142:31] prosthetic joint that he just got with
[142:33] the knee replacement. So please please
[142:36] hold him in prayer. Um, and Dean's
[142:39] mother-in-law, Francis, Marty, Craig,
[142:42] Craig's uncle, Louie, sorry, Keith,

[143:26] needs prayer?
[143:28] >> Who? Monica.
[143:30] >> Your neighbor Monica. Okay. Okay.
[143:35] May the one who blessed our ancestors
[143:37] Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and
[143:39] remembered Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and
[143:42] Leia, bless and heal these ones. May the
[143:47] Holy Blessed One overflow with
[143:49] compassion upon them to restore, heal,
[143:53] strengthen, and enliven them. May he
[143:56] send speedily a complete healing of the
[143:59] soul and healing of the body along with
[144:02] all the ill among the people of Israel
[144:04] and all humankind soon speedily without
[144:08] delay. And we pray this in the mighty
[144:10] name of Messiah Yeshua Vimu.
[144:14] >> Amen.
[144:15] >> Amen. So, um, thank you for joining us
[144:18] for the live stream and, uh, may you
[144:20] have
