🇵🇸 What do we need for peace in Middle East? "I’m from Gaza – peace will only come if we rid our mosques and schools of radicalism," says Moumen al-Natour, a Palestinian lawyer, co-founder of the We Want to Live movement in Gaza. He is also former political prisoner held by Hamas. Disarming Hamas is crucial but we must also dismantle the extremist ideas fuelling the violence, he argues in our pages this week. For decades, the educational and religious systems were exploited to steer Palestinian consciousness exclusively toward war. 🔗 His comment piece is on our site now - read in full there

📚 It is an open secret that Jews and Israelis are being sidelined in publishing. “It might be that the jacket designer refuses to work on it [the book], or the publicist doesn’t make the required phone calls. It might be that the marketer doesn’t conduct the digital campaign properly. It might be the case that the bookshop doesn’t put the book in the front of store,” explains Oliver Malcolm, the former HarperCollins publisher who has 15-plus Sunday Times bestsellers to his name. He explains to the JC why he joined the newly-launched High Line Publishing Studio, which is providing a safe home for Jewish and Israeli writers. It was launched by literary agent Neil Blair as an antidote to monoculture, and the increasing marginalisation of Israeli and Jewish authors since October 7 in mainstream publishing. This is important. Especially now. This is why we are partnering with High Line Publishing Studio to bring you an exclusive event, to hear directly from its founders: *Challenging Cancellation: The story behind High Line Publishing Studio* It is hosted by Nicole Lampert who will be in conversation with Neil Blair (Founder), Jacky Klein (Executive Publisher, Odessa Editions) and Joel Simons (Executive Publisher, Antidote Books). 📍Nov 25, NW London, 19:30 🎟️ Tickets are live now: https://vist.ly/5ngm5

🇬🇧 Emily Damari shares her message to Britain, as we commemorate the third year since October 7. She tell us: "I want to ask you to remember what happened on the 7th of October. It was not an accident, it was a planned terrorist attack." She also thanks everyone in Britain who stood by the victims of that dark day and who publicly shared the plight of the hostages - both via official channels, such as the parliament or media, but also in the their personal lives, in the streets or on their social media. We have not forgotten, Emily. And we never will. May the memories of all those who we lost be a blessing, and may those who survived heal and live long, fruitful lives. 💛 עם ישראל חי 💛

🤼 Meet Keenan David: The Krav Maga master teaching Stamford Hill’s ultra-Orthodox how to defend themselves. South African-born Keenan moved to the UK from Israel ten years ago, when he first encountered the Stamford Hill. He immediately saw there was an obvious need for his expertise amongst those in the community. He believes being able to defend oneself is vital for the visibly Jewish, given there is a "target on your back" when you are Jewish in the UK. So he got to work. He now has a gym focussed on the Stamford Hill ultra-orthodox youth, where he teaches teens all kinds of martial arts. His dream is to teach every Jew to defend themselves, religious or not, and has opened another gym for the wider Jewish community in London, Tribe 12, in Golders Green. He is clubbing together with other Jewish coaches to create the UK’s first all-Jewish youth team for Jiu Jitsu competitions. 📰 Read Keenan's story on our site now thejc[dot]com

🇬🇧 Remembering the Battle of Cable Street - 90 years on In 1930s Europe, Fascism was on the rise; and in Britain it was no different. In Britain, it took the form of the British Union of Fascists, led by Oswald Mosley. Mosley and his Blackshirts openly promoted antisemitism, blaming Jews for Britain’s problems. On Sunday, October 4, 1936, Mosley planned to march thousands of his supporters, the paramilitary group nicknamed the 'Black Shirts' due to their black uniform, through London’s East End — home to much of Britain’s Jewish population. Jews were encouraged to stay away for their own safety. They didn't. What happened instead went down in history as a critical moment in the fight against Fascism in Britain. Jewish and non-Jewish East Enders united to form a barricade against the Black Shirts and the 7,000 police officers protecting them. Their strength and determination and street fight pushed the fascists back. 90 years later, the families of those who stood their ground on Cable Street on that day in 1936 commemorate their bravery. These are some of their stories. 📰 Full story on our site - thejc[dot]com
