Measles is making headlines again. And as cases rise, it’s worth revisiting what leading Charedi rabbis have said about vaccination. During a previous measles outbreak in Orthodox communities, prominent rabbis in both Israel and the U.S. spoke out forcefully against the anti-vaccine movement. Rav Moshe Sternbuch instructed fathers to make sure their children were vaccinated, citing Jewish law and the danger that failing to do so could pose to human life. In the U.S., Rav Shmuel Fuerst invoked Lo Saamod Al Dam Re’echa — the prohibition against standing idly by your neighbor’s blood — and ruled that children should be vaccinated and that schools should not admit unvaccinated children. And rabbis in Lakewood put it simply: “Nobody has the right to endanger others by not vaccinating their children.” With measles spreading once again, their words are especially relevant today. Today is both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day, two observances that invite us to reflect on history, identity, and displacement. In 1492, the same year Christopher Columbus set sail with the backing of the Spanish monarchy, Spain expelled its Jews. Jewish converts to Christianity, known as conversos, were also connected to the financing of Columbus’s voyage. For the Jews of Spain, it was another chapter in a much longer history of displacement. Nearly 1,500 years after Jewish communities took root in Spain, following centuries of exile from their ancestral homeland in Judea, they were once again forced to leave the place they called home. During a family trip to Spain, Jew in the City founder Allison Josephs explored the remnants of once-thriving Jewish communities and reflected on the antisemitism she encountered there centuries later. Her experience raises questions about what happens when a society forgets its history, what it means to be indigenous to a homeland, and how the Jewish people have preserved their identity through generations of exile. Three years since October 7. We didn’t ask for the horror of that day, and we’d give it back if we could. But in the years since, many Jews have found themselves more connected to their Judaism, their people and each other. For Allison Josephs, October 7 created a new sense of urgency in her own Jewish life. “The hostages, the wounded, soldiers in harm’s way, displaced families, psychological scars. Jewish Patriots owner Robert Kraft is making headlines this week for standing up to Jew hater Macklemore. But years before this latest news, one young yeshiva student had an encounter with Kraft in Jerusalem that he says changed his life. It was 2005, shortly after Kraft’s New England Patriots won the Super Bowl. Kraft arrived at the newly renovated Kraft Stadium in Jerusalem carrying something no one expected: the Vince Lombardi Trophy. As hundreds of students crowded around him, eager to get close to one of the most coveted trophies in American sports, Kraft raised it in his right hand and recited: “אם אשכחך ירושלים, תשכח ימיני” - “If I forget Jerusalem, let my right hand be lost.” For the author, the moment completely reframed what he was looking at. Here was a man at the height of wealth, fame and professional success, holding the ultimate symbol of that success—and reminding a crowd of young Jews that none of it compared to their faith, heritage and connection to Jerusalem. This Friday marks 25 years since the September 11 attacks. Today, Ground Zero is a place that holds both the memory of what was lost and the story of what was rebuilt. Orthodox Jewish executive Rachel Kraus was one of the people who helped bring that vision to life. As part of the team behind the World Trade Center complex, Kraus led brand partnerships and strategy for its retail development, including the Oculus. Its design contains a remarkable detail: on September 11 at 10:28 AM — the exact time the second tower collapsed — sunlight shines through the building at a specific angle, creating a beam of light through the space. For Kraus, who has her own personal experience surviving terrorism, the project took on professional, personal and even spiritual meaning. And Erev Rosh Hashana, its message of rebuilding feels especially fitting. “If you shift even a few degrees,” she asks, “how much more light can you bring into your life?
