There is extensive damage to buildings in Gaza. Not total, but extensive. Why? Because Hamas took over Gaza in 2005 and spent the next 20 years building tunnels underneath Gaza - using them as terror bases from which to initiate war and hold masses of hostages in them - which they did on October 7, 2023. The only way Israel could fight and beat Hamas was to attack these terror bases. No country attacked in the savage way that Hamas attacked Israel (mass-murders, rapes, torture, kidnapping and beheading) would have done anything less. That’s why Gaza looks like it does. War is hell - but it is patently NOT a genocide or anything close to that. 97% of the population were not killed and a large number of those killed were terrorists. Civilians who sadly died during the war were deliberately used by Hamas as human shields. [By contrast, 67% of Jews were murdered in the Holocaust - that is *actual* genocide.] There is a mass propaganda machine spewing out misinformation - aimed at demonizing the world’s only Jewish country. But a lie told a million times is still a lie. Don’t fall for it.

After the opening Kol Nidrei service of Yom Kippur on Sunday evening, where I live in Israel, people poured onto the streets. Everyone wearing white as far as the eye can see. No cars - even those who are not religious opt in on this custom. The result is beautiful, the streets are bustling with people engaging with each other. Everyone is fasting but the atmosphere could not be more joyous and uplifting. After Yom Kippur, I spoke with friends and family overseas, who spoke of entering synagogue with a heavy (necessary) security presence. They worried about attacks like we saw last year in Manchester, a few years ago in Germany or this year in Ontario. Before the end of prayers, they are told not to congregate outside, for their own safety. The difference could not be more stark.

This is a huge victory for the Jewish community. This is how we hold our institutions accountable for antisemitism. Any institution or organization that denies the same rights to its Jewish members that it guarantees to all others cannot be allowed to continue without reforming.
