After repeated controversy surrounding Lush’s anti-Israel activism and allegations of extreme antisemitism, the retailer will reportedly leave Westfield’s centres as its leases expire over the next three years. Westfield was co-founded by Frank Lowy and John Saunders, two Jewish immigrants and Holocaust survivors. Actions have consequences.

On 19 September, this cowardly individual decided it was acceptable to pelt our peaceful gathering of mainly elderly Jewish people with several eggs at Brighton Clock Tower - ironically, as we stood publicly and proudly against antisemitism. It was a thuggish and deeply disturbing act of targeted anti-Jewish intimidation - more reminiscent of extremists hurling stones in Gaza than anything we should expect on the streets of Brighton. Thanks to Sussex Police releasing his image, he has now been identified.

To be clear - the promotional material for today’s pro-Palestinian march read: “Three years since Operation Al-Aqsa Flood - Victory to the Intifada.” That is the language of glorifying the 7 October atrocities and calling for further violent uprising. We positioned ourselves so everyone taking part in their hate march could see our message - and feel thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

Today, local pro-Palestinian activists gathered to celebrate the 7 October pogrom - the worst massacre of Jewish people since the Holocaust. The massacre came before the war that followed. Yet Israel is now falsely accused of “genocide” in a campaign that demonises Israelis and Jewish people. Members of Sussex Friends of Israel and Jewish & Proud formed a small, spontaneous counter-protest and stood in the road to block their march this afternoon. We will not remain silent while terrorism is celebrated. 🇬🇧🇮🇱

A group of us from Brighton joined today’s march commemorating the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street. Among us was Sue Sheftz, carrying a photograph of her father, Mark Levine, who was born in 1915 and stood against the fascists at Cable Street in 1936. Years later, while serving in the British Army in Mandatory Palestine, Mark was imprisoned after refusing to fire upon the Exodus - a ship carrying Jewish Holocaust survivors seeking refuge. He said would not fire on his own people.
